110 years ago a major conflict was raging on the European continent. It was the first major war since 1815 and was triggered by an assassination of an Austrian Arch-Duke the month prior. Many thought the conflict would have been over rather quickly but it would bog down into stalemate and static trench warfare another 4 years. This war would shape things to come throughout the 20th Century.

Makes me wonder how things might have turned out had Germany won in the first couple of months and captured Paris causing the other powers to sue for peace. Probably would not have given rise to Hitler and the Nazis. Would the US emerged as The Superpower after the Cold War? Would we looking forward to College Soccer instead of Husker Football (frightening thought)??!!

Interesting question!

Without a doubt Hitler would not have come to power and WW2 would have most likely never happened. However Stalin was no angel and my guess is he would have invaded Poland and other western countries. We might have been fighting on the side of the Germans against the Russians instead. Who knows?

American football would still be going strong. But it might have looked very different from a racial standpoint. WW2 was a stepping stone for african americans and without it civil rights might have taken a bit longer to catch hold.

Something had to happen to abolish the monarchy system in Europe. There was really no avoiding it in one way or another.

True. The wide span of desperation level poverty across Europe was the perfect tinderbox for a war of that scale. Mix in a strong dose of nationalism and it was on.

Then, a postwar atmosphere designed to grind Germany into dust, set the stage for an even worse war.
