It wasn't rocket science. we got a bit of a bonus by moving up 3 spots during the week before the tournament, but basically.... 2 losses cost us 14 spots as of this minute (i said it would be 12+ when we were at 37 the week before -- we rose as high as 34 before the games started). i thought we had to win probably 3 games to get in so we'd be under 40 which is generally the automatic at-large cutoff. if we're out, nobody to blame but ourselves and i'll be the first to admit it if i was wrong -- i honestly hope i was but as of today we're probably toast.
truth is, the constant rolling over and dying in big games had been fairly consistent for a while before erstad became coach. it's just more noticeable when you've got a real chance to go somewhere. erstad's done some things very right -- just not enough to get us over the hump. this year it was the michigan series and the tournament plus a couple games against terrible teams. last year i could bring out a list.
you fix the games against terrible teams by not scheduling them if possible (you can't get away from northwestern, you can get away from nicholls state and northern colorado). you fix the games against good teams by bringing in competitors to play for you (like the football team is trying to do with kjj and others).
i'm really hoping we get another shot -- i think we'll take advantage. but i'm not counting on anything.
either way -- next year this team should be better. having a pitching staff semi-locked in before the year even starts is a major boost. losing boldt hurts but schreiber should improve (that's scary) among others. we SHOULD be better. i just hope it's good enough i'm tired of missing out like this.
