So my wife, who is a Notre Dame grad (class of 89), and a huge Domer fan, informed me over coffee this morning that six Notre Dame football players were arrested yesterday in two separate incidents. My wife does not know I loathe and despise Notre Dame (you know, that "marriage" thingy), so I had a hard time hiding my Schadenfreude.

So I guess dear old Nebraska U is not the only school where people in the football program run afoul of the law. Does anyone on here have any more details on these incidents? The news articles I read were vague

Yeah, tackleing a cop is a bad deal. The gun possession and weed for the other guys shouldn't be too big of deal, I wouldn't think. Depending on who's gun it is and if it stolen or something stupid.

Confirmed. The starter was a safety. He was charged with a misdemeanor. Weed, firearms. Butler looked to be headed toward a medical redshirt this year. He was charged with 2 felonies.

I don't know or care either way, I just think most bigtime CFB programs operate about the same way. Coach wants his coaches and players available because he is judged on wins and losses and these storms always blow over, but fans remember 5-6 regular seasons forever. AD's want them to run a choir boy campaign and still win. I think your statement fits in with most programs, and I'm fine with that. Not disagreeing or picking a fight on the subject at all and hope it doesn't come across that way.

Pretty weak attempt to dig Kelly. "Yeah, they'll probably get punished accordingly, but I'm sure Kelly won't initiate it." So what?

ND is notoriousfor taking an annoyingly self-righteous approach in some of these instances. 2014 for example when Kei Russell (starting corner) was suspended an entire year for not telling on his teammates in the whole cheating scandal.

Personally, I am tired of the constant pressure put on coaches to "discipline" people. Let the legal system deal with it

Redfield is the starter at safety. Butler (cop tackler) is out with a broken foot anyway.

Coney (LB) and Williams (RB) were expected to contribute. White (CB) and Stepherson (WR) too but in a lesser capacity.

The problem is some bar brawls that go to a parking lot can end tragically and one punch and a bad head bounce and someone is being tried for murder. Taking on two officers in the wrong area can lead too more angry bystanders escalating or a gun being grabbed. Then you get charged with results. ... Lots of drivers of cars in jail for someone shooting a clerk. I have jumped in too help officers; they are humans with families and outstanding service goals. ....The first report I saw was already angling to get Butler off. Im for rehab, this needs a misdemeanor plea and probation if I was too guess - its just too violent ( part of this is too give others pause ). A lot is jurisdiction and other factors. He is not just a tackler. UGH

Yes those are the two most serious issues here, not the weed. Both are serious offenses. And if the young men are convicted I am sure the legal system will give them an appropriate punishment.
But my further point is simple: why is there ANY pressure right now on coach Kelly to do anything?? These young men are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. As of now they have been convicted of exactly nothing.

Penn State allowed boys to be sodomized for years, and that was covered up.

So on one hand, you have the media over dramatizing things, and on the other hand, you have Universities minimizing everything.

I draw the line at those who would try people in the media before there is even a court hearing. The PSU situation involved a cover up. Yes. And if the guilty parties can be convicted of a criminal offense in that cover up then they should suffer legal consequences

For 15 years I was on the disciplinary committee of my university. And there are often conduct code violations that did affect continued enrollment, sports team involvement, and scholarship forfeiture. But one thing was always made very, very, very clear to us by our legal staff: under NO circumstances were we to hand down punishments to students over non campus crimes until the legal justice system had run its course. Period. No exceptions.

Kelly released a statement, dismissing Redfield (starting safety) from the team and suspending Butler indefinitely. The remaining players are still subject to any penalties the University brings down.

It wasn't exactly a crazy thought to think nothing would happen, we've seen it play out many times. Some thought something would happen, some didn't. About the same as on any board, but I don't think anyone suggested it was stupid to think one way or the other, until you just did.
