Phil Knight should stare with envy. Nick Saban should hop his private jet to take notes. Dabo Swinney should start another round of fundraising, as Clemson’s ode to extravagance – replete with a slide, mini-golf course and bowling lanes – cost more than $200 million less. Oregon’s football palace – considered the gold standard until Northwestern – cost just $86 million, or $186 million below Northwestern’s multi-sport palace. The only thing comparable in the football world is the billion-dollar facility that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones built in Frisco, Texas. And while they’re difficult to compare, Northwestern’s beach-front location trumps the aesthetics of Jones’ landlocked strip malls for me. In the collegiate space, Northwestern’s facility makes the University of Texas look three decades behind, sends taunting echoes to the facilities at Notre Dame and out-Hollywoods both USC and UCLA. “When you see that football field laying beautifully inside that incredibly designed structure, it takes your breath away,” said Pat Ryan, the Northwestern donor and trustee for whom the football fieldhouse is named.

They are nice facilities and a nice view of downtown Chicago, but it's not going to make a difference for getting them to be a power program. It may help them get some better 3-star players though, but they still have to do with the academic stuff to get players admitted.

That lake is a dump.
Nice facility but...i feel like i have to try to make it as big a deal as the cost.

Nice facilities, but we'll be rubbing their faces in the turf regularly in 2 years...if not earlier.

Nerdy does not recruit the athletes to beat Frost. Could not caree lessx a bout past games, none were coached by Frost. Frost destoyed Maryland last season and will destroy Nerdy on the regular.

Nerdy's coach said the B1G West would be going through Nebraska when we joined the conference. A delay in that happening, but in 2 years it will be true. This year it is about execution and improvement.

No doubt its a nice facility, but they still play in the biggest joke of a stadium in the B1G which means they haven't even come close to winning an arms race. Also its important to note that facility (all $270 million of it), including the fieldhouse is for all sports not just football.

It is beautiful, good for them.

None of that stuff matters though. Just win. The best recruits want to play for a winning program not a program that built a greenhouse on a lake.

It just makes them tougher so let’s not kid ourselves of that fact. They also have a very good coach leading them.

Calling Lake Michigan a dump is screaming jealousy of the scenic view the Northwestern athletes have.

Well Bo was only 1-1 in Lincoln and both Northwestern teams finished the season below .500. So it wasn't just a Riley thing.

Never can take a Fitz team for granted.

Bo’s team was looking ahead the next week against Penn St at the time Joe Pa coach team in 2011.

Yes, beach-front location. Malibu, move over.

That is one gorgeous facility. Anyone bagging on it or the program for puttin it together...we’ll I guess I don’t know what to say. It sure won’t hurt any of their programs, I know that.

the practice facility is phenomenal, but when northwestern is producing a hideous and unsafe playing surface at Ryan Field, I will continue to make fun of them.

Plus it’s a lot more fun to make fun of those nerds.

Is it ok to say that it is a great looking facility and that it still won't matter that much to Northwestern winning football games???

This an honest question...why would you dump that kind of $$$ into a practice facility and not put it into your actual football stadium that is in DESPERATE need of an upgrade/facelift? Do they plan on playing their games inside the new facility and calling it a domed stadium maybe?

If scenic views mattered, Colorado, Pepperdine, and UCSB would be powerhouse athletic programs.

The used their noggins? Everyday use by athletic programs vs 6 times a year for one team. Sound decision
