For example, there are 134 in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for the 2024 season. It is insane to pretend the ones in the middle and bottom of their athlete recruiting budgets are competing with schools like Oregon at the top. The whole competition facade needs to end until there are caps, and while we are at it, the concept of student-athlete should go too.

The NCAA is presently irrelevant, but it is still needed to level the playing field and provide some semblance of order to this current mercenary college sports scene.

Presently teams are just buying their trophies. 🏆

I agree, but I'm concerned it's not that easy. The cap will just be what's published and it'll go back to bags of cash for additional players. They enforce any rules prior to NIL. I'm not sure what would make the NIL cap any different than the previous cheating.

I think creating a limit on times you can transfer would be an easier fix. Courts might throw that out, but maybe a two year NIL package they have to fulfill before transferring again?

Not sure, but I agree it's a mess. It's free agency every year. I will admit it's only sad because we're not Oregon or Texas.

No professional league would survive with unlimited free agency. Everyone is essentially on a one year contract and can opt out of playing when they want (bowl games). Even the NFL suspends players without pay when you just opt to not play a game. How do you build a roster in this environment when you're not one of the top 5-10 NIL schools?

I get wanting the players to benefit, but to me this has swung the pendulum to far the other way. If we as fans can't get attached to players for more than a year it will take some of the fun out of it. No more irrational love of Tommy Armstrong for some on this board. Sad days....

If your school isn’t in the top 20 in NIL, you are basically just a farm team for them. Any diamond in the rough you develop will just leave for the highest bidder.

That's bullshit. We don't say this about higher rated recruits, nor should we for lower ranked recruits. James Williams made himself great. He had excellent frame and balance with which he could develop elite pass rushing skills.

To deny the investments programs make in the development of athletes is silly.

Frankly, I am concerned a guy like Coach Rhule, who thrived on player development, is outdated in an era of top budget teams just poaching what they need.

I'm not denying that. I'm denying that James Williams story is any different than the myriad of 4 and 5 stars who have achieved similar results on the field. And that was only made possible through having a base level of talent and lots of development. That Williams owes this university any more than any other transfer just because he originally came from a CC, it's bullshit.

What is stopping an organization from creating a contract with a player right now? it's a business opportunity. go make a business decision and offer a binding contract with noncompete clause and buy out clause.

This makes too much common sense. Hopefully it will go this way, but everyone has to be bond to the same approach if one school steps out and does this on it own, it will end up with any good players.

They can’t “cap” anything, until there’s a union and CBA. The courts already established this. The only thing that could inject some form of normalcy would be transfer rules and I’m not sure who or how those would be enforced. All conferences would have to agree and call it an NCAA transfer rule or something.
