The issue is that only assistant coaches can have direct off campus interaction with potential scholarship athletes. Staff members cannot under NCAA rules have contact with potential scholarship athletes off campus. They may only have contact with walk-ons off campus.
That severely limits Kenny Wilhites impact in these scenarios.
So according to your Miami link, Wilhite is NOT able to have contact with walk ons off campus.
Since off campus contact doesn't happen until the summer before their senior year, it is my experience that the majority of the recruiting is done via phone, email and text AND considerably earlier than the summer before their senior year.
After Sept 1 of the PSA's junior year, institutional staff may initiate contact with the PSA via phone, text or email.
Prior to Sept 1 of their junior year, the PSA may initiate unlimited contact with institutional staff.
Point of the matter is that if Nebraska is waiting to initiate contact until it can have off campus contact with a PSA they are going to miss out on 99.9% of those players.
As I said before, I can promise you that if Kenny Wilhite wants to have contact with Nick Henrich, it is happening and there are no rules violations.
