Nebraska vs. Texas A+M 2006

I just rewatched this game. It is interesting microcosm of Callahan's tenure. Nebraska jumped out to a 21 to 10 lead behind a nice offensive mix of power single back running and quick slant and crossing pattern passing. On third and goal from abut the five, Nebraska calls a short side run and Cody Glenn runs over a guy for a TD. Nebraska really had A+M on their heels. An early turning point happened the second quarter. Up 21 to 7 and driving, the Huskers go for it on 4th down at A+M's 27 yard line and Taylor gets sacked. A+M gets a field goal before half to make it 21-10. In the second half, all heck breaks loose. The offense completely bogs down and A+M starts hitting big plays on offense. Luckily, three things happen. Nebraska blocks a field goal, A+M gets a late hit on Taylor, and Purify saves the game. This game preposterously had 1 second put back on the clock at the end!

One of my favorite games. All of NU's trips to College Station in the Big 12 era were memorable, at least to me.

1998 (L): We entered at #2 and A&M jumped out quickly to hang on. This was kind of Newcombe's last gasp at holding the starting QB job. A&M went on to win the conference over #2 KSU.
2002 (W): Back and forth game in the fog. Strange night. David Horne had a big game to give us the win, huge fourth quarter. I remember Dahrran Diedrick carrying multiple defenders into the end zone early in the game.
2006 (W): Good summary above. This clinched the division for us. One thing you missed was Cody Glenn's profane celebration into the camera after his TD.
2010 (L): Great game that shouldn't have been. Martinez's ankle injury and locker room phone call, Ben Cotton crotch assault, Cody Green's ineffectiveness, Courtney Osborne's weak roughing the passer, so many other penalties. Just a great going away present from the Big 12.

Interesting point about the uniqueness of the A+M games. Ironic that the 2007 home game during Callahan's last year is almost forgotten. It wasn't on tv and it's hard to find info on it now. It's like the game doesn't exist.

Win that game and we go to a BCS bowl.

The thing that made Pelini so hated is that he was always one game away from great seasons.

It drove the fans mad.....lol

2010 game... 8 minutes and change left. Nebraska down 6-3 at the A+M 12 yard line facing a third and seven. Slant to Kinnie is incomplete, but a flag is thrown. The refs convene and pick up the flag. No pass interference. It sure looked like the defender had a hand on Kinnie's back early. What a huge no call. If Nebraska gets a first and goal, they could have run a couple more minutes off the clock and gone up 10-6. That probably wins the game.

The Ben Cotton nard-nabbing call was the final straw for me. I'm not into "the refs are out to get us" thing but not only did he get his pearls clutched, it was done on national tv AND he was penalized for trying to get them unclutched. Just wrong.

Best part, the zebra was right there.

Went back and watched the 1998 game through the early fourth quarter. What a miserable game. The A&M defense definitely had figured out how to stop us. Most of A&M's scoring was the result of a few big plays: intermediate pass just over our defender's hands turning into a long TD, short TD after a 71-yard run by their fullback, and a sack-fumble in the end zone. Our offense just couldn't get going, didn't get a first down the entire first quarter and punted six times in the first half. Amazing we only lost by seven (I quit watching at 28-7 last night).

You missed our good part then. We had the ball with a chance to tie and threw a pick on a miscommunication between Newcombe and his WR (Sean Applegate iirc).

Oh yeah, I know we made it tight in the fourth. But the first three quarters were downright miserable to watch.

In hindsight, the A+M game in 1998 was obvious to see coming. The Washington game (55 to 7) was the outlier. The game between those two (OSU in KC), Nebraska sputtered mightily on offense.

That was the “buyout bowl”. We lost the game and Both teams fired Their coach at year end.
