Nebraska vs NW basketball

Kevin Keatts...if you want a name.

Miles does was a lot of coaches do...they get scared to play their true freshmen. They would rather lose with the guys they trust and I can understand that but it is something you need to examine.

If JH and IR were getting a ton more minutes this season would the record be any worse? Probably not.

Also, why Miles won't press more is beyond me.
You seem to have all the answers

The way I see it is we don't have any "good" big bodies with Morrow out. No one inside has to be double teamed so they can stay out on our guards which leaves us with very few wide open looks. Our guards are very good but our inside game on both sides of the floor is baaaad!!
That's not even a point worth discussing because our guards don't even know how to throw a proper entry pass. The ball did go into the low post a couple times (amazingly) last night, but it was Roby, McVeigh and Jacobsen throwing it down there. If you ask me, Jordy should get the ball down low at least 10 times a game (instead of once a game on average).

I think we need to make a change. I hate to say that because we all hoped Miles was the guy. But it seems he isn't.

He has brought in some good talent. But rather than use that as an excuse for keeping Miles, maybe we should use it as a reason for getting rid of him. If we hired a new guy now he would be coming into a decent situation talent wise. And we might just discover that a new coach might know how to use that talent better than Miles does.

I appreciate the compliment, thank you.
You really need to get down to the football and basketball offices and get everything running perfect.
For someone that constantly mocks differing opinions, you sure do come up with the best fixes for every situation.
Have you thought about starting a nationwide counseling service for Universities? Your amazing resume should get you behind the gates, no problem.

Well, you can't really expect to compete with Northwestern...what with their enormous advantages in facilities, tradition, coaching experience, and the fact that they can bring in any chump off the street regardless of his academic capability.

Yep. And the raucous 7000 fans...

The fact that Miles did not get an extension last year, makes me wonder if Eichorst is very high on him. Miles will only have 3 years left on the contract after this season, which means that Eichorst either has to extend his contract or fire him. Most coaches have 5 years on their contract at all times.

That said, I'm really not sure who we could get that's any better, as this job has been a graveyard for promising coaching careers. And Eichorst's hires haven't exactly been lighting it up so far. I know Hoiberg was born in Lincoln but there is a 0% chance he will ever coach here. If the Bulls fire him he will get another NBA job or a big-name college program will swoop him up. Archie Miller would be good but I think he's holding out for a bigger-name job. Gregg Marshall has turned down bigger names. Eric Musselman at Nevada is the guy I would go after, has turned that program around quickly and has a lot of NBA coaching experience.

Tough to say without knowing what we would be willing to spend if Miles does get the axe. But, I'm all for getting dirty. Hire Kelvin Sampson and be done with it.

I guess the most interesting thing to me in this thread is finding out that JohnRossEwing and 4.6.3 are not buds....always assumed they were, for some reason...

carry on with the discussion....:)

Journal-Star on Horne:

Horne silent against Wildcats: For the first time since the Clemson game Nov. 30, freshman Jeriah Horne did not play. Since sparking Nebraska's offense with 18 points against Southern and 11 points against Indiana, Horne's shooting percentages have steadily dropped. The 6-7 forward is 10-for-31 from the field since the Indiana game, including 5 for 17 from three-point range.

Meanwhile sophomore Jack McVeigh has broken out of the shooting slump that led in part to Horne getting on the court. McVeigh played 30 minutes off the bench Thursday, finishing with eight points and tying a career high with seven rebounds. Nick Fuller also got ten minutes.

"It was really practice quality too, and I told Jeriah afterwards that was the deal," Miles said.

Wow, Horne's shooting percentages are dropping at such an alarming rate, they're starting to approach those of the guys who played big minutes last night. But it is nice to know that McVeigh has "broken out of his shooting slump" by going 3-for-8 (including 1-for-5 from the three-point line). At this rate he'll crack the 35% mark by March.

We need other guys outside of Webster and Watson who want to take a shot. Horne is that guy....and even when his shot hasn't been falling the defense has to be conscious on the court. Meanwhile, Roby is deathly afraid of taking a shot and is essentially a non factor on the offensive end.

Sir, once again your kind words flatter me. Thank you for the compliment. I have not thought about starting that nationwide counseling service for Universities but it is clearly a solid idea. Would that be something you might be interested in? We could start it together.

Wow, I had no idea how bad our women's team was doing. 6-16. Just awful..

I watched some of the women's game before the men's game. Yikes! I don't think I've ever seen a sloppier, more uninspired display of basketball in my life. They looked terribly out of shape and lacking even basic high school fundamentals.

Regardless, Marc Boehm needs to be held accountable first and foremost before any of the basketball coaches. The oversight of the basketball programs has been a disaster under his tenure. I do not want him involved in selecting future coaches. Interesting that Eichorst brought in Devaney to oversee football, yet keeps Boehm in charge of basketball despite his mediocre track record.

If Roby's deathly afraid to shoot, seeing Horne get benched for an entire game probably isn't going to help.

Perhaps Horne is just pressing, or nervous, or trying to compensate for Morrow's absence, or [insert other excuses that always apply to NU's sub-40% shooters].

Well, womens' record wise only this year...but to not have a finger on the pulse, obvs before this....

Question for those that know. Is Roby that bad a shot? Or is it omg coach might get mad at me if I miss?

Roby's not really what I would call a shooter, but he's good at getting to the rim and needs to be aggressive in that department. And his mid-range shooting certainly isn't any worse than anyone else on the team, outside of Watson and Webster.

It's obviously different when you are actually playing at game speed....but in pregame he can fill it up from midrange and deep. Great talent...not much confidence right now apparently. We need him taking more than one shot a game...especially if he's getting 20+ minutes.

No way I could keep up with you. I don't have a wide enough knowledge of the best bars in the country where your thoughts are born.

NOBODY is going to fix the Women's program until this years Sophomore class cycles out.

At least one more year. Canning him now HOPING to get somebody better would be stupid unless you have a sure fire proven winner at a major college level lined up and ready to go.

I don't disagree. I think it is always dumb to fire a coach in any sport unless you have a really good idea of who you might get. Otherwise, you just start the whole stupid process all over again.

IF Eichorst were to can him for somebody like Altman....well fine. But canning him for an "up and comer" would be just insane.

Lol. True. Wasn't Miles an "up and comer" when we hired him? If we are going to fire him we need to get a proven coach at a power five school to come here. But that will be hard to do.

Like I said a week or two ago, the recent playing time trend is why I'm not a big fan of the "hot seat." If Miles is going to get at least one more year, have a closed-door meeting with him today and make that point clear. That way he can play the guys who hopefully represent the future of the program, instead of giving a combined 99 minutes to Taylor, Jacobson, McVeigh and Fuller. If that's the current state of the Nebraska basketball program, we might as well have given Barry Collier a lifetime contract.

I have said it before and I will continue to say it. So you Miles lovers blast away.

He coaches like a mid major coach. He coaches like he is the underdog in every game. That is why his teams play at or below the level of the opponent. His teams will play up and will beat teams like Maryland but play down and lose to a Gardner Webb. Every single year.

He doesn't have confidence or the belief that his players can execute and dictate pace other than to slow it down, dribble dribble dribble, weave, weave, launch shot as clock expires. He has kids playing scared because he benches certain players in slumps but is not consistent in the theory.

He loses players every year to transfer, and replaces them with transfers.

I agree, but then again how many coaches at the major-conference level survive 4 losing seasons in their first 5 years? With the money we invested in new facilities, we should expect a better return at this point in Miles' tenure. I said NIT or bust a the beginning of the season. We are a fairly young team, but we are not a very inexperienced team. Many of these guys played significant minutes last year. And if you look around the Big Ten, almost every other team is just as young as we are. I thought I read somewhere that no Big Ten teams have more than 2 senior starters? So we will still be picked toward the bottom of the conference next year.

You are also counting on none of our young talent transferring after this season. What if Watson or Morrow or Roby or Horne decide to leave to play in a different offensive system that will help them thrive?

It will be interesting to see what Eichorst does. He cannot leave him with only 3 years on the contract, so if he keeps him he will have to give him an extension.

Up and comers can do very well.

So you think this guy who has basically studied and worked in basketball his entire life is somehow less intelligent than a fan on a fan forum? Talk hoops with the guy. He gets the game more than you may think. If you think the best he knows is dribble, dribble, dribble, weave, weave, launch shot as clock expires, then you'd be wrong.

What we're seeing this year is a combination of two things. 1) An incredibly young, but talented team that is inconsistent. 2) A team who lost what would be an 18 point scorer in Andrew White because he thought he could market his NBA game better at Syracuse 3) A key player going down to injury that may have resulted in at least two more wins making the conference record look surprisingly good vs. mediocre.

Yet you want to sit and blast the guy by claiming he doesn't know what he's doing.

I'm not sure what your job is, but I'm sure you'd love if a guy who casually watches you do your job maybe 4% of the time you actually are doing your job came in and said "jeez, you aren't very good at what you do."

Never said he doesn't know basketball. I said he coaches like he is at a mid major and like an underdog. He takes the air out of the ball on the offensive end. Try to deny it all you want but it's fact.

Doesnt matter what I do, no one on here has never run a country either but we all have opinions on how to do that.

So in your mind, unless you are run and gun up and down the floor that you are a take the air out of the ball guy, right? There are a couple coaches with hardware that don't run up and down the floor (see Coach Izzo at Michigan State, see Wisconsin under Bo Ryan).

I stand by the circumstances above as the key reasons for this year's struggles, but I also see an NCAA tournament team with their first win in the tournament in two years if the decision makers give him those two years.

Just think about the team in two years:
- Watson will be a senior
- Morrow (health permitting) will be a senior
- Jordy will have had 3 years to develop and should be a beast as a junior
- 5 star transfer from Georgetown will be in his second year in the program
- Roby will be a junior
- Gill will be back off injury

Also imagine McVeigh as a senior will be more consistent from 3, Jacobson will be a senior along the lines of a Bruce Chubick contributor.

This doesn't count Nana Akenten (a high scoring 3 star recruit) who will be a sophomore.

The future is bright for this team and I think we as fans owe it to Miles to let him enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Throw out this year if you would like....what were the issues the past two years? One in which we were historically bad on offense. Is it a coincidence that over and over and over again we are mediocre to bad offensive team under Miles?

I've explained in length in a previous thread. In short, Miles caught lightning in a bottle with Petteway getting the team to the tourney. He had to ride the horse another year which set back when he was able to really start implementing his way. That finally happened last year, so I viewed last year as a first year in a way. Now the pieces are coming together and I'd like to see them come to fruition.

Again not what I said. In typical forum style, there is no middle ground. If I say he takes the air out of the ball you say I want run and gun.

i can't look ahead 2 years because Miles has lost multiple players to transfer over his time at Nebraska. I don't know if Watson, Horne or Roby will be here in two years. I don't know that Morrow will be able to stay healthy for a full season. I don't know that the guy who couldn't get it done at Georgetown is going to somehow be able to get it done at Nebraska.

The future is bright only in theory. I have seen no indication that next year will be any different than this or last.

Andrew White is the only truly difference maker that Miles has lost to transfer. The others were not significant pieces.

And let's agree, the future is definitely uncertain, but can we just agree to see what happens in two years to let the guy who put these pieces together play it out? We haven't had a group as talented as this team in over 20 years. If we go bust in two years, then I'll be the first one on your side to say it's time to go. But I think in all fairness, he deserves the chance to play out this team with the pieces I mentioned above.
