Nebraska HS Basketball coaches might be POed about this

I can't say for certain, but I'm going to guess that Bratton's parents, who live in the OPS school district, used open enrollment rules to allow him to go to Westside, as many other students do who live in the OPS district. If I am understanding the rules correctly, since he lives in the OPS district, he'd be in essence just be going back to the district he is supposed to be in, thus he'd be eligible immediately (barring an appeal). Can't say I like the rule.

This is correct ^^^^^

I thought as part of the "Learning Community" they did.

Option enrollment, not guaranteed?

Co-worker lives in Elkhorn and 2 of his sons graduated from Westside in 2012 and 2014. His next 2 kids [twins, male/female] were denied entrance, so they rented an apartment down by LaCasa and they are now attending Westside.

Did his twins average 18 points and 10 boards per game? Winking

Still called open enrollment and yes it's not guaranteed. The school has to have room is a factor. Millard West for instance is closed to open enrollment due to the student population being too high. There's more factors the last I knew.

The school has to have room is a factor.

Considering his twins are the same grade as the basketball player, in the top 10 of their class, 32+ ACT each, and we're denied, I question the "have room" as a factor. District 66 is tough to get in to, unless....

I can't remember the wording, but if the transfer would help the school's 'diversity', that is a big fsctor. I considered trying to have my kids try to go to Elkhorn, but......Didn't think their chances were good due to that factor.

Could be, but that's not a blanket assumption I'm willing to accept. There are "diverse students", in the same class as this basketball player, that were denied. My personal opinion is, this has more to do with a good basketball player that is also of color, which is why he got in.

More

It looks like this was more on his mom and Fant from South. Problem is that South is maxed out. Maybe he can go play for Northwest! RollingLaugh

And what about his grades for this semester. How does that work out? Rule definitely needs to be changed

And people cry about private schools!

If it is best for him he might as well do it.
yes, most privates don't recruit despite public opinion...but the ones that do...boy...Lincoln Christian girls 'getting' a kid from the Chech national team is a bit over the top

Wow. Getting to transfer after the season started. That is amazing. I went to high school in the early seventies in Nebraska. We had a kid, who was a pretty good athlete, move to town from Denver during the summer before his senior year. He did not become eligible to play sports until second semester. His dad had died and his mom was bringing the family back to her hometown. Here in Washington every school recruits that is any good at sports. A freshman girl basketball player who is already being recruited by the "Bigs" (AAU ball gives players the most exposure now days) is playing at a smaller 2A school six miles from town. The smaller school has a better coach thus they win more than the two 4A schools in town. She should be going to the 4A high school that is the furthest away from the 2A school, but she is not.

Prep does.

Not sure how anyone knows what most private schools do or don't do. I can say that some in Omaha most certainly do recruit in numerous sports. I also can say I know of some parents who have used the existence of nearby private schools as a 'bargaining chip in dealings with high school coaches of their kid apears to be a stud as an 8th grader.

Two words will be important in this investigation: undue influence. Also, South is closed because of capacity issues. Home school is Burke, I believe. That would be my guess as to where AB ends up. Burned some bridges at Westside.

WESTSIDE is going to let him finish his finals so he will have the grades needed for the 1st semester. personally I think his highschool career should be done with after this latest move he tried to pull. sit him the rest of the year maybe he will learn a valuable lesson about life and it's trials and tribulations you go thru to become a man. the grass isn't always greener on the otherside.
