Nebraska - Creighton basketball

We've got 4 guys that have never played d1 out there right now against a veteran team. They are playing scared shitless
Yeah I get that this is a thrown-together stopgap team. Even so, surely someone can make an effort to get open. Jays are not exactly stellar on defense.

Oh this is nothing short of a disaster. The preseason goal was to go .500 that seems like a lofty goal. I've heard great things about Banton and Walker. Shamiel is a good player too. Matt will have a much easier time recruiting 5 guys rather than 14 and we'll get this thing going in the right direction

I know this is a throwaway year, but sure would like to see SOME ball movement and movement without the ball. There is just none of either.

Hoiberg is supposed to be an offensive genius, but it doesn't even look like we run an offense. Miles and Sadler ran better offensive sets.

Just how ugly will this get? Will Greg fill sorry for Fred and go into a stall?

Fred has 1500 plays. McDermott admits to copying what Fred does. This is about execution. These guys shit their pants under the lights of CHI

It gets easier when you know this team is an island of misfit toys from other teams. A team is what a team is.

Except for Thor and Cheatham, none of these guys have played against a power conference opponent (does Washington State count?). For Cheatham, that was two years ago. For Thor, it was almost exclusively in mop-up time.

That's what Hoiberg had at ISU, too. It was never near this bad. He went .500 his first year there, and made the Big Dance in Year 2.

Good thing we have offensive and defensive specialist coaches on the bench. Otherwise this have may have gotten out of hand.

I’m not concerned about Hoiberg and my near-term expectations are low. But I would like to see more give-a-crap from the guys on the floor. Way too much standing around.

Defense is clearly an after thought with these players.

He also didnt cut the entire roster as soon as he got there

True, I didn't expect much this year, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. I honestly think Millard North might be able to beat this team. And the only guy who seems like he cares (Cheatham) won't be here next year. Curtis already left and Cam Mack doesn't seem to get along with Fred, as he did not start again today. We may have an all-new roster again next season too.

no, you don't really think that.

I guess I just expected them to be much better from behind the arc and definitely from the FT line. Especially since outside shooting is going to be a big part of the Husker scoring.

Huskers didn’t quit and outplayed Creighton the last 10 minutes of the game. Creighton will struggle in the Big East with a lack of size with Epperson injury prone.

Mack was late to the bus by a minute so he didn't get to start today.

Creighton is not a good defensive team and has nobody to protect the rim. Which is what made the stand-around-and-do-nothing-then-jack-up-a-shot routine all the more maddening. As for the last 10 minutes, most teams tend to take their foot off the gas when they open up a 31-point lead.

Nice to see all the die-hard Jays fans dressed as empty seats. Maybe they needed to get to Lincoln early to watch their VB team play...

This team likely won't touch .500 this year.
IF they can win 10 games this year, it will be a helluva coaching job. Just the way it is. I'm not quite sure what Miles had planned roster wise but no doubt the way we left his job status dangling severely hurt his ability to recruit. We would have I'm afraid been similarly short on big men. Some have bitched about the Frost extension BUT when the pundits start wondering aloud about a coach's job security you HAVE to either extend him OR be ready to deal with the consequences of leaving him flapping in the breeze. The good news is that I think Fred has maybe a higher ceiling than Tim did. IMO, it just seems like the way he's coaching is more logical AND more fun for the players. I do worry about Doc's practice coaching style. Watching teams like Michigan, MSU, Iowa etc, we HAVE to get some bigger guys. Much like football, B1G basketball is a bruising team sport.

But but but but Doc's a great defensive coach. I'm kind of wondering with Samari leaving if maybe there are some hurt feelings with some of the players. Doc's a hard ass.

I haven't "bitched" about the Frost extension, I said I don't think it really accomplished anything. To which you responded that it stopped Frost from showing up on one college football blogger's "Coaching Hot Seat" list. So I stand corrected - it was an outstanding use of $10 million because yeah, NU would have otherwise really left Frost out there "flapping in the breeze."
