Time to put 2017 on the backburner...

Only 3 days away from the game. Time for a prediction thread now that we know who is playing and who is not playing... for the most part.

Out: Armstrong, Westerkamp, Gerry, Marcus Newby?(groin), Tyler Hoppes

If it wasn't clear after Riley said Armstrong will be "an emergency guy", it should be clear after Alonzo Moore stated that 'he will be wearing Armstrong's helmet and cleats for the bowl game. Moore said they came in together in the same recruiting class and had always talked about walking off the field together one last time so that's why he's wearing Armstrong's equipment.'

I was not aware of Marcus Newby's injury until the latest article said that he 'has not practiced at all since the start of bowl prep as he deals with a groin injury.'

In (but not 100%): Terrell Newby, Alonzo Moore, ______________?

Still Questionable: Tre Bryant (hamstring)

Missing Gerry and Newby on defense should hurt a little, but overall the unit if fairly healthy so there is no reason they shouldn't show up for this game.

Fyfe played a great first half against Maryland, but the second half left much to be desired. Will his left wrist injury slow him down in this game? We will find out, but I think he will show up and play well most of the game.

Some OL players might have missed some bowl practice early, but it sounds like they are all back and ready to go now. There's no reason they should get pushed around (except for our awesome center doing what he does) with the injuries to Tennessee's D-Line.

With Bruce Read out on special teams, will the STs perform better or worse or about the same? Who knows, but Riley hopefully changed things up a little in the blocking scheme for punt return to give DPE some chances to make some game-changing plays. Hopefully he also put in some changes on blocking scheme for Lightbourn so he doesn't have any punts blocked. The punt/punt return game could be the difference in a close game.

So, what say you Husker fans? Riley is 7-2 in bowl games... go Huskers!!!

I understand we have injuries. So does Tennessee. They also lost to Vanderbilt, and it wasn't very close. Their offense can score but their defense can be lack-luster. This works out well for us--I'd much rather be playing a team like this than a team with a great defense and a lack-luster offense, it works in Ryker's favor, and our healthy O-Line.
Ryker played well enough in the Maryland game to show he can be an adequate quarterback, as long as he has run support and some help from the defense. Also, he's known for a month he's the starter, and furthermore so has Riley and Langsdorf. All you Riley-can-do-no-wrong guys--give the guy some credit here. Look what we did last year against UCLA after a month of preparation. I believe Riley will have a game plan with Ryker's strengths in mind and with our healthy O-Line we will hopefully see a more thorough and organized attempt to establish a run game. I also have a feeling we're going to see a receiver have his best game of the season--one we don't maybe expect to.
Defensively, I won't give my opinion on Gerry because it isn't going to be popular. Everyone is going to be jumping over each other to proclaim how much of an insurmountable loss this is for our Defense. I disagree. And a lot of people have said he's a toxic senior in the locker room....well, he's gone! you got your wish, so that should get better now, right?
Tennesee will score points but we can still win the turnover battle and win the game. Sure they'll have a few big plays, but I believe our defense can force some short fields as well and help Ryker.
The wildcard is special teams. I have a gut feeling that the special teams is going to make a play and we're all going to be going bonkers. Maybe a punt return, a block, etc. or something. It's happening!

We will win the time of possession and the turnover battle, as well as finish with more rushing yards (250) than Tennessee while they finish with more passing yards. Ryker goes 15-24 for 200 yards. Nebraska wins 30-24!
Believe!!

38-17 Tennessee. Not having our 3 best players is gonna hurt in this one. Looking forward to 2017!

If the team that played in our last game shows up, this will get ugly fast. If we show up and play like we want to be there we have
a shot.

Too many injuries...Tennessee will stack the box and force turnovers. Unfortunately, the game will get out of hand. Nebraska has struggled to move the ball against bad defenses this year and I don't see it changing in this game.

Was the Iowa game the exception or the rule? That's the question.

49-21 Orange people, and 7 of our points will come in garbage time long after game was decided and game won't be as close as the score.

If TA were playing, much closer to a toss up.

So far the conjecture is that if Tennessee wins, it will be by blowout, but if Nebraska wins it will be by less than one TD. I agree but will remain swayed by my rose-colored glasses.

I will stick with my original prediction in another thread on Dec. 4th:

NU 38
UT 35

Who will show up, the team that lost to Iowa 40-10, or the team that took Wisconsin to OT?
Riley surprised last year by beating UCLA 37-29. I think he has a chance to do it again this year.

Who will show up, the team that lost to Vandy 45-34, or the team that put up 63 on Mizzou?
Butch Jones' team blew out Northwestern 45-6 last year and Iowa 45-28 the bowl before, so I think they are able to put up some major points Friday.
Because of that, I predict they will score a lot of points against us, so hopefully we can hold them to 35, because imo if they score 38 or more, we lose.

GBR!

Even Vols fans and writers think their defense is horrible. I just don't know if we can take advantage of it.

30 - 21 Tenn wins.

77-7 Vols. I hope I am right because I want to see a massive meltdown on this board.

Holy &@!* would you ever see a meltdown if that was the final score!

I can't imagine anyone even watching the ending of the game if that happened.

Please Lord let that not happen!

35 - 17 Vols....we've packed it in this year. Look forward to graduation.
I don't think we've packed it in, even though it may have looked that way against Iowa. I think, at the end of a long season, they didn't give it their all for sure... but now that they've had a month off, I think they will want to show the nation that they aren't as bad as what we saw against Iowa.

I'm not good at predictions at all, and don't know what we will see Friday in terms of a score, but I do think we will see maximum effort from the players.

I hope I'm right, at least...

Butch Jones' Tennessee teams are typically pretty darn good in the kick games. Our All-American Kickoff Return man is out with a torn ACL, but there are other able bodies there. On punt return, Alvin Kamara and Cam Sutton both have multiple punt returns for TD's in their careers... Coverage units are pretty solid as well...If it is a special teams play, I am betting on Tennessee making it.

My prediction is based on Tennessee's defense being a little bit better than the nightmare they were the last 3 games of the season... I don't think Nebraska can slow Tennessee down if Dobbs has a decent day.

Vols 38
Nebraska 20

I am concerned that Nebraska can play a lot of zone and give Dobbs some issues with that. Zone defenses slow his reads down and dont give up running lanes like man-to-man does... I wouldn't play a snap of man coverage if I were Nebraska.

Why wait, here's my little response. May the I R S audit you for wanting this. Ha, yea, It does make you feel better to vent.

Hope your right, I would be happy with a good effort. The problem is Tenn will stack the box and we will have no answer. We'll miss wide open guys, can't run a screen, throw behind the slot on the slants, won't be able to take advantage of mismatches with our TE, and so on. Third and long Ryker will be running for his life. Ready for 2017.

You could be right with this assessment, but I am hoping Ryker will be a little more accurate with the ball than TA. We will know soon enough.
