Nebraska basketball confuses me!

Barry Collier was here for 6 seasons
14-16 7-9
13-15 6-10
11-19 3-13
18-13 6-10 NIT 2nd round
14-14 7-9
19-14 7-9 NIT 1st round

89-91 36-60 (.375 conf winning pct)

left to become Butler AD

Doc Sadler was here 6 years

17-14 6-10
20-13 7-9 NIT 2nd round
18-14 8-8 NIT 1st round
15-18 2-14
19-13 7-9 NIT 1st round
12-18 4-14 - fired

101-89 34-64 (.346 conf winning pct)

Tim Miles

15-18 5-13
19-13 11-7 NCAA lost 1st game
13-18 5-13
16-18 6-12
10-11 4-5

73-78 31-50 (.383 conf winning pct)

All very similar. Two are considered busts and one is, for some reason, held to a different standard because his team got hot for 10 games in year 2.
You think Miles is a bad coach and you're going to go out of your way to point out deficiencies. Fair enough. In most cases, I agree that numbers don't lie, but in this case, I see an entirely different product on the floor with Miles than I saw under the previous two coaches. The best numbers I can put to this is the number of top 150 players on this roster. I'm too busy now to run down the list, but I believe Watson, Morrow, Gill, Horne, and Copeland are all top 150 players. Nebraska simply hasn't had a collection of this many top 150 players on their roster. So I'm willing to let these guys go two more years to see if Miles can put this team over the top. If after two years nothing comes from this collection of talent, then I will jump in your boat as hard as I can. Until then, I'm going to be a fan and be optimistic and support the development of this talent.

I have been going to Nebraska games since the Moe Iba era and the talent on this team passes my eyeball test. I believe Tim Miles has shown enough success everywhere he's been to give him the benefit of the doubt.

You quoted a post of mine which was simply a direct response to poster who asked how Miles stacked up to Collier and Sadler. I supplied the info asked for, with a bit of an opinion on how people view the successes of the 3 coaches.

I simply find it strange that the guy who many believe has the best talent has the worst overall winning pct and the fewest number of winning seasons.

Couple of thoughts...first on expectations. The fact that NU was picked to finish last in the conference and that they might surpass that should not be considered an accomplishment. Miles being picked to finish last in his 5th season is a problem in and of itself.

Also, millions upon millions of dollars were poured into the NU basketball program in the past 7 years or so. If the goal was to merely maintain the status quo - then mission accomplished. NU was able to be a bubble team once every 7-10 years in the old facilities too.

It's not easy to be a"player" on a regular basis in basketball....but it sure as hell isnt as hard as Nebraska makes it look.

Now for some more stats that dispel some of Big 12 vs Big 10 narrative from the Sadler era vs the Miles era.

From 2006-07 season to 2015-16 season, here are some numbers.

Sadler first 4 years in Big 12 vs Miles 4 years in Big 10
NCAA berths 23/27
Tournament record 38-22 (.633)/ 44-27 (.620)
Sweet 16 9/12
Final 4 1/4
CG 1/1
Champion 1/0

Keep in mind the Big 12 had 12 teams during Sadler era and the Big 10 had 12 for Miles first two years and 14 for the final 2 years.

So while the Big Ten had slightly more berths and had more final four appearances, the Big 12 was slightly better in winning pct and also had a national championship team.

Just wanted to point out that the Big 12 wasn't the mid major caliber compared to the current Big 10 Miles is competing in

They are young. Not that hard.

Final 4 teams(4) still out weigh one national title team by quit a margin in my view.

Awesome. I didn't say the Big Ten wasn't better, I simply pointed out the Big 12 during the Sadler era wasn't the Patriot league some made it out to be.

And I never said it was the Summit league either.Winking

Thanks for proving who's been the better conference thou.

Similar record vs similar teams. One adored and one a pariah.

One has brought in a vast amount of talent...On paper more than we've seen since at least the mid 90's and one didn't. It's not that hard to understand that guys who recruit better are going to have a longer leash...Which, by the way, Miles hasn't really had a longer leash yet. He's been here less than 5 years and Doc was here 6. Doc made 3 NIT's in six years and Miles has made 1 NCAA (worth at least 3 NIT's imo) in 4 1/2 years. It isn't that hard to understand.

This thread is G-O-L-D, Collier and Sadler.

Are we still getting that transfer from Georgetown next year? I know he hasn't done much to justify a lot of optimism, but he was, if memory serves, a highly rated recruit at one time.

I bring it up because it pertains to the debate on here concerning Miles. I have been as critical of him as anyone, but there is no debate concerning the level of talent he has brought to Lincoln. That alone should buy him some extra years to see what he can do.

Nebraska hoops has been one of the worst D-1 basketball programs in history. It has been a dumpster fire of awfulness for decades. I have been following our hoops since I was a kid, sitting in the old coliseum (which I loved) watching Cipriano's up and down teams. I know many on here have the same timeline for following our bball.

My point? Geez people.... we have been a shitfest for so long, what does another year or two matter? For the first time in ages we have a coach who has attracted real talent to Lincoln. I haven't sensed this level of interest in NU hoops since Danny Nee's early years.

Give Miles two more years.

Ok then for all those that want to give him more time, do you extend his contact the normal 1 year or do you do what Eichorst did last year? Which would leave the current deal as is and he would be left with 3 years on that deal.

That is a tough question Tuco. On the one hand you don't want to give him an extension if he continues the status quo. On the other hand, not giving him one hurts recruiting. So I am torn
