Nebraska basketball confuses me!

How is that even possible?

We are challenged health wise. I thought we would lose tonight once Tish fouled out. We need Morrow to compete.
Tschimanga was playing really well when he fouled out (on a pretty weak call). Earlier in the game he had some cringe-worthy moments, but he was pretty solid in the second half.

Northwestern has a very nice team. Rutgers is the only question mark team that you mentioned.

Northwestern going to be tough for anyone in this conference and will finish in the top 3 or 4 in the conference and will represent the conference well in the tournament..

We should have beaten tOSU and Rutgers with or with out Morrow.

We should have won those games BUT both of those teams are playing better ball than they did to start the season.

It's about time to start calling it what it is.

Cursed.

Don't know who or what put it on it, but somebody or something at some point did.
Nothing else makes sense.

We should be 6-3 even without Morrow. OSU and Rutgers were complete disasters. Hope we get healthy and make a nice run!

They'll have to go 6-3 down the stretch and win at least 2 in the B1G Tourney.

Otherwise Tim Miles is toast. I simply wouldn't expect Eichorst to keep a coach that misses the postseason three straight years. I like Miles, but the results don't show progress.

Disagree. Miles is safe after this season.

Eh, Miles may not be 100% safe, but I don't agree that he needs that kind of finish to get another year. If the Huskers go 8-4 in their next 12 games - which is what you are suggesting - he might be Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Eichorst has already fired a coach who's won championships in both the Big XII and the Big Ten (Yori) and a coach who never missed the postseason (Pelini).

Miles has accomplished neither. Again, I like Miles, but this is Eichorst's decision.

For example, who here a month ago thought Banker would be fired?

Men's basketball is not the same as football. The expectations are different, as they should be. The team was not expected to make a tournament run this year. To this point, they basically played up to preseason expectations. Get back to me next year when the core of the team are juniors.

Preseason predictions had Nebraska last place in conference. They are exceeding predictions so far.

Yeah I would say we've been better in conference than expected and maybe played slightly worse in the non-conference then expected.

Losing White was a tough blow this year. Haven't been all that impressed with the Miles regime thusfar but hey, this is NU basketball we're talking about. He needs at least another year for sure. I think he'll eventually turn the corner!

you do realize Yori and Pelini were not wins and losses, correct?

If you want to see different perspectives, check out the Purdue and Indiana boards also calling for their head coaches to be fired.

Fans in general have extremely high expectations and have been conditioned to think that firing dumb head coaches is the fix. Unfortunately they will likely see the next guy is also dumb.

Some national commentators area already speculating on who Indiana's next head coach will be. Kind of nuts. People just don't get how tough it is to be good year in and year out and how thin the margin of error is. Roy Williams will probably the next guy on the hot seat.

I would be really surprised if Eichorst factored in preseason predictions in his decision. I doubt there is a set number of wins Miles needs to get to. I'm just hoping we can get to 9 Big Ten wins and one in the tournament to get a NIT bid. I think that's realistic at this point.

Consider this:

A coach must recruit highly talented high ego players who were likely the best on their team to come to a program with little history of success.

He must manage a collection of egos of guys in their late teens early 20s when they are getting their first taste of freedom as young men.

He must deal with injuries.

He must teach them fundamentals and X's and O's.

When a player goes cold he must have done something wrong.

Yes these guys get paid a lot of money and they are fair game for criticism. No, they aren't perfect. But, I do think we, as fans, can help from time to time by showing support vs always being so critical.

poor coaching, questionable player development and imbalanced roster. This team plays hard defense but at times is physically overmatched. I still don't see Miles employing a consistent offensive philosophy/game plan that matches the talent available. Also we are a team of Tweeners or swing players. Only 1 true PG & 1 Low Post Player. As of right now the 2017-2018 roster will have the same issues

2017-18 Roster
PG - Watson
SG - Gill, Taylor, Palmer, Akenten
SF - Copeland, Roby, Horne, McVeigh,
PF - Morrow, Jacobsen, Fuller
C - Jordy

Hopefully Copeland's Herniated Disk is corrected with the surgery. If healthy I think he will man the SF Position. I know many see him listed at 6-9 225 lbs and think he is someone who plays in the paint but he is not a back to the basket kinda player. Even at 6-9 he was considered a SF recruit coming out of high school. He is more of a weapon at the SF Position with his perimeter game and handle. He could pose some match-up problems offensively against slower PF if Miles slides him down there. Defensively I think he could man the PF position no problem but would rather have Morrow down low doing the physical dirty work at PF.

On paper we could have a very nice starting 5 next year:
PG - Watson
SG - ?, multiple options but none proven yet
SF - Copeland
PF - Morrow
C - Jordy

Talented roster but still has some questions or concerns. What happens if Jordy or Watson get hurt or can't play. We lost Gill and Morrow to injuries this year and that was used as the excuse by fans for us losing games. We need good depth at all positions. No excuse in year 5 not to have 2 true PG and 2 true Low Post Players on the roster. Injuries happen to every team, as do transfers, suspensions, illnesses and foul trouble.

We will have the same questions next year, where is our offense coming from in 17-18? Quality depth at PG and Center? Copeland could be an offensive weapon but remember he is coming off of Herniated Disk Surgery, which is a serious back injury. In sporatic play Horne and McVeigh have shown some outside shooting but not at a level that we can count on them. We don't have a post player who has proven he can get his own shot. Morrow is a great garbage man on offense and defense but he doesn't have the game right now to create his own shots consistently.

Every roster has it's challenges, but it seems we have many of the same concerns repeating almost every year

Buy your tickets

Wow. A lot of disgruntled fans out there. I still believe in Tim Miles. I think he is putting together a roster that can compete in the top half of the BIG 10 Conference. I would be glad to buy any season tickets from any fans that want to quit on this coach. I can't wait for the next couple of years. NCAA Tourney and Sweet 16 BABY!!

The next two years
Didnt Morrow play against Gardner Webb the first NW game and not play against Purdue?

More to it than Morrow.
Morrow is not an All-American, so of course, he won't win every game he plays and cause the team to lose every game he misses. But he is a significant piece of the team and being out is certainly detrimental.

9 Big Ten wins plus one in the B1G tourney means a final record of 16-16. That won't earn a NIT bid.

Or how about the morons that keep calling for Stoops to be fired.

Basketball is different than football. How many years did Collier and Sadler have? Neither one of them went to the Dance... Miles has at least done that.

I'm not saying he should be kept on indefinitely, but if he exceeds expectations (as in, finishes some where in the middle of the B1G) how do you fire him?

Considering the success of SE's hand picked successor to Yori, he might get a little gun shy about getting rid of Miles to quickly and trying his hand at hiring another basketball coach.

13-15 6-10
11-19 3-13
18-13 6-10 NIT 2nd round
14-14 7-9
19-14 7-9 NIT 1st round

89-91 36-60 (.375 conf winning pct)

left to become Butler AD

Doc Sadler was here 6 years

17-14 6-10
20-13 7-9 NIT 2nd round
18-14 8-8 NIT 1st round
15-18 2-14
19-13 7-9 NIT 1st round
12-18 4-14 - fired

101-89 34-64 (.346 conf winning pct)

Tim Miles

15-18 5-13
19-13 11-7 NCAA lost 1st game
13-18 5-13
16-18 6-12
10-11 4-5

73-78 31-50 (.383 conf winning pct)

All very similar. Two are considered busts and one is, for some reason, held to a different standard because his team got hot for 10 games in year 2.
