Nate Gerry....

I think the crowd that doesn't have a problem with it is the crowd that believes this play is a non-issue based on time and score (rather than it being an uncontrollable random act that "luckily" did not hurt us because of the time and score) while also recognizing that silly penalties will hurt is when commit them in closer games against better opponents. I think most of the folks who think this is a non-issue believe silly things like the ball flip will not happen when the game is on the line. I didn't like that he did it, but I understood that it didn't hurt us and i chose not to get all bent out of shape over it. If you prefer to raise your blood pressure two days after the game ended over inconsequential BS like that play, one which you have absolutely no control over, then have at it.

You are tying Gerry's ball flip to his two ejections (both questionable) for targeting in 2015-16 season. Neither of those had anything to do with him committing an unsportsmanlike act, so, by nature, they're completely unrelated to what happened on Saturday. The ejections were for his actions while making football plays; the USC on Saturday was the only non-football play in the bunch. If he BEGINS to show a trend of taunting opponents or doing other stupid things like that that cost the team, then I'll join you in your frustration. So far, he's not trending.

If Gerry is trying to set a record for most ejections in a season, he'd better get to work. He's 0-1.

You're making a lot of conjecture about the coaching job Riley is doing without knowing any facts about how he addresses unsportsmanlike or other silly penalties with the team. Maybe he doesn't address them at all. Maybe they are addressed by the position coach in a very firm manner.

Definitely not raising my blood pressure over it. Just giving my opinion. Isn't that what these boards are for? Making a conjecture about it? It is like at work when people keep doing stupid stuff and they boss says "Ya I took care of it" but the stuff keeps happening. Did he / she really take care of it? We can only wait and see if these silly penalties such as this or a hit out of bounds will come back to hurt us as the players keep doing them.

After watching the Oregon game, it does seem he was tired of this behavior and put an axe to it as they played much better in this aspect.

I'm not sure how you write the previous statement below without being a little worked up, and hence having raised your BP. Lots if emotion in that post. So I don't believe you that you didn't raise your blood pressure over it.

"It was a douche move. Have some class. You should be beating their asses and you act like that. From a guy that has had troubles finishing a game lately, he may want to grow up (unless he is trying to set a record for the most ejections in a season). You now only get 1 freebie unsportsmanlike conduct penalty as the 2nd one is an ejection. I guarantee that if this would have happened against a good team that we ended up losing too, the (people are pussies crowd) would have a different tune. Luckily it was a crappy team that we destroyed (only due to a QB who was doing whatever he could to lose the game). But the deal is, you practice like you play. Riley needs to shore up the stupid penalties very quickly. Let Nebraska have 100 yards in penalties this week with late hits and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties like they did this week and they will lose by 40 points."
You're perfectly welcome to give your opinion, and I'm perfectly welcome to respond with mine - "maybe we should just calm down and see if it becomes a trend before we start teeing off on the kid." The work scenario you offer touches on what I said about it being a consistent problem that actually impacts the game's outcome. It seems like it wasn't a problem in this big game. So he's not trending. He has NEVER been trending with USC penalties.

I agreed with you 100% that I would have a problem if the play had costs us. It didn't, and it still hasn't. Maybe it will down the road, and then I will have a problem with it. but until then, I don't. So, essentially, it was a moot discussion, as I and other suggested. You conjectured that Riley needed to get things under control - and I conjectured that they were never out of control. My feeling, based on his lack of history of USC penalties, is he knew the time and score and chose to do what he did knowing it would cost the team 15 yards. You can disagree, but the data suggests otherwise.

What is the point of digging this up?

Someone on here called him the most overrated player on the team today. Just a couple fun facts for anyone who believes that. He now has 203 career tackles. Only the 5th Husker DB with over 200. Others are Mike Brown, Daniel Bullocks, Larry Asante and Tyrone Byrd. He also has 10 career picks. School record is 14. He will be drafted and playing in the NFL next year. Think before you post. Lesson of the day.

Only reason I responded was I haven't been on a lot lately and had just seen the reply. It really didn't get me worked up.

2 ejections (questionable to say the least and bull crap calls to be honest) but he has to know that then a suspension for violating team rules plus this says something at the minimum. I am not saying he is a bad kid, I am saying the decision he made was a douche move.

Riley does need to get things under control as he has always had an issue with penalties even when at Oregon State. So yes this is an issue and will most likely continue if he doesn't get it under control. Nebraska averaged 10.3 penalties per game last year, more than 2 penalties per game higher than Pelini led teams. I am in no way trying to make this into a Bi-Polarini / Riley argument, but an issue is an issue.

Both of the last two posts are correct. He is a very good player and valuable to our defense. Whoever, he does need to grow up. It is his senior season and time is about up.

If there's any evidence that certain people have to look for stuff to complain about-this is it right here. I mean, by all means-let's not talk about that big win we had on Saturday. Who cares about unimportant stuff like that. Let's continue talking about something from the week before, because it allows us to attack one of our own players. That's what's really important on here, you know. That's all some of you care about.
Sad and absolutely pathetic.

If the Wyoming safety Winegard had picked off Tommy Armstrong and flipped him the ball, and Armstrong had fired the ball back at him. The "no call" on the retaliation would have been the right call by 99% of those calling for the offsetting penalties. The overwhelming attitude on this forum would have been well if the safety hadn't flipped the ball to Armstrong then he couldn't have thrown it back at him.

It was a stupid thing to do. Period.

The second guy only gets punished in these events when the refs miss what started the event. So they punish the first action they see.

Gerry said he mistook the Wyoming QB for the ref. I'll take him at his word.

Please don't speak for 99% of the board, because you aren't speaking for me... If the role was reversed and Tommy threw the ball at the defender in retaliation, I would have yelled at the tv wondering what he was thinking, and then thought that we got away with one if no flag was thrown on Tommy. No way would I think the guy had it coming and Tommy shouldn't be flagged. I would imagine I'm not alone in this thinking...

Are you telling me if Tommy threw the ball at the defender and was flagged for it, you would have said it was unfair that he was flagged, since he didn't start it? Because that's what you're suggesting...

It simply comes down to perspective and hypocrisy. I have been on these boards in one way or another for 15 years. Complaining about bad calls and defending poor behavior is commonplace. Fans of all schools complain when they feel their team is being unfairly. The fact of the matter is that the QB can't throw the ball at Gerry if Gerry hadn't made the dick move of handing him the ball.

As far as 99% is an exaggeration. But it stands true if you read these boards. People can't even admit that Nebraska was the benefactor of some questionable calls in the Oregon game without saying "well Oregon got some too". There are people complaining that Northwestern is going to gain an unfair advantage by growing their grass long. It's called home field advantage. Nebraska had a 6 foot crown on the field of Memorial Stadium for years and it helped a speedier team be faster to the edge. Even though the design was for field drainage. The point is that it's sports and we all have a vested interested in our team and we all see things from their perspective and rarely look at the situation from the other side.

you told me not to speak for you so don't tell me what I am suggesting. I am not suggesting the penalty shouldn't have been called. I AM saying that if the exact situation took place and no call was made for the retaliation on Nebraska's QB the comments on message boards would have been about the Wyoming safety making a dick move and that The QB was justified in his retaliation because he wouldn't have had the ball if the safety hadn't tossed it at him.

Agree with everything but your final paragraph. All very good and accurate.

I still think a ton of people would be pissed at Tommy for throwing the ball even if he didn't get flagged. How often do we preach, "don't retaliate... You will get flagged." We say that all the time. The coaches, current and former, have said that and will continue to say that. With that in mind, whenever I see retaliation I always cringe, just waiting for the flag. I could be wrong of course, this is just what I believe.

1 pick away from All time school record! Trails only Mike Brown in tackles for a DB!! Soo overrated and lucky!! My gawd!!! LOL...Idiots!!

I was critical of Gerry but also said he was playing better, and he is having his best year by far. Last nigh in camp Randal was night and day different from the last time he was there. He's playing great.

Was anyone critical of all the troublemakers on the 95 defense? What about our oline mocking and telling the opposing dline what play they were gonna run, saying try to stop it, and belittling them by running their asses over? The defense has to be cocky, deal with it. Grab a box of tissues for heavens sake.........

Safety: Jamal Adams, LSU; Nathan Gerry, Nebraska
Adams took his game to a new level in 2016, stepping up as a complete defensive back and one of the best all round players in the nation. Outstanding against the run and coming up to tackle receivers on short passes, Adams has seen 33 of his 55 tackles result in a defensive stop. He has improved in coverage in general too, and played a key part in LSU all but shutting out Ole Miss tight end Evan Engram when the two teams met this year. Like Adams, Gerry keeps his place here from mid-season, excelling in coverage with a PFF grade of 88.7, coming away with four interceptions and six pass breakups and impressing against the run too.

Second team: Marcus Williams, Utah; Budda Baker, Washington https://www.profootballfocus.com/co...n-cook-highlight-pffs-2016-all-american-team/
