Nate Gerry....

RR things that he is toxic.

Also...the flag was okay.

Gerry is all N since Purdue.
Call was BS. I've seen players do that without getting a flag. But I sure have NEVER seen a player hit another player with a ball and NOT get a flag.

Mountain West officiating going all Mountain West officiating.

I thought the call was right. Nate is a punk. That was poor sportsmanship on his part. For someone who is so 'awesome', he sure has a lot of bone headed plays. I agree with the comment about him being a special teams player at the next level.

Seriously it wasn't that bad. It's not like he ran up to the guy and handed him the ball and bowed.

And plus when you add the fact that the quarterback then threw the ball at him hitting him in the back and that didn't get a foul???

Do you remember how Miami used to be in the eighties Nikki? That was taunting. What Gary did wasn't that bad. I really believe it had more to do with them being Mountain West officials. Because even Carlo's penalty was bogus.

Yeah, but the reaction by their QB to me was real telling of how he interpreted Nate's gesture, so in this case, I thought it was right for Nate to get the flag. It wasn't this incident that made me think this way, I've never thought highly of him and this was just another example of why I think he's a jerk. It's no big deal either way.

The Huskers are on the officiating radar, for whatever reason. You can not give them a reason to flag you. If it is a close call, we have already seen what happens. Stop putting yourself in that situation.

especially one who just came off a suspension.
These stupid penalties show a lack of coaching control - Sorry while maybe some people say no big deal or the refs are being petty the real issue is why players think it is allowable to do these types of things. The answer to that is that the coaching staff allows it

Nate is a beast. John Lynch-esque. Best safety since Larry Asante. First full game since mid November and led the team in tkl & picks. Regardless of perfect technique, he's always around the ball. Penalty is a non-factor for me. CFB is plagued with personal fouls and conduct penalties so far this year. So in that sense it's parity.

There simply isn't enough depth for the staff to attach any significant consequences to these stupid plays. Too much drop off between the 1st team and second team to sit a first teamer for an extended period if they do something stupid. Risk of harming the team at this point is greater than the benefit of teaching an individual lesson about accountability. I think the staff would love to yank a player and sit him for a half. They just don't have that luxury.

Does it show lack of coaching control, or does it show a little bit of swag and possible nastiness coming back? You can go either way. I actually like it, but can see how it rubs people the wrong way.

After his pick, he lighly handed the ball to the QB who tackled him. He then threw ball at Nate's back. Should have been offsetting. Not worth a 15 yarder. Refs were being bitches today. More than usual.
The way he went down the tackle was either a face mask or horse collar with nothing called. I was waiting for a replay but they didn't show it.

Pretty sure it was neither... Back full of jersey is all I saw.

Run fits were bad? Hmmm...I think in the first half they had about 30 yards rushing.

We only had forty something I believe to their 35 at one point late in the half. Defense is a team game too, even if Gerry doesn't get every assignment right we could still swarm to the ball well and shut them down.

But that's not the type of comments you want to be hearing about a four year starter and leader of your defense.

Again I think he's a pretty damn good player were arguing on the margins here

I can watch film instead of looking at game stats. Gerry has consistently been a poor tackler at nu. He messed up numerous times today. He can be great at times but other times makes big mistakes. He's kinda like tommy, lots of stats cuz he's been playing so long.
He is overrated. It doesn't mean he's horrible, just that he's overrated thus far in his career. We are one game in with him though so I guess we will see.
I remember Andrew Shanle being real fast. I don't ever remember him running someone down from behind. I don't ever remember Shanle ever lighting someone up either. I believe Gerry would have complimented Mike Brown very well.

I'm sure Andrew is a good guy and all, but please don't ever put Andrew Shanle and Mike Brown in the same paragraph again.

Things I learned from this thread:

  1. Nate Gerry is a poor tackler
  2. Nate Gerry lacks coverage skills
  3. Evidence of points one and two is that he has been on the field enough snaps to likely end his career very high up on the list for tackles and interceptions.
  4. That he projects as an nfl special teamer even though he can't tackle

Man, this board is clearly out of new things to argue about. Where is Taylor Martinez when you need him?
No kidding. I can't believe people still are talking about this.

This is a play that had a point of emphasis put on it a few years ago by the NCAA coordinator of officials. So, it's gonna get called. Beyond that, its a non-issue. I clicked in here to see why it was still being discussed. It's Monday of Oregon week, and we're literally talking about a flip of the ball from Saturday. Sheesh.

It was a douche move. Have some class. You should be beating their asses and you act like that. From a guy that has had troubles finishing a game lately, he may want to grow up (unless he is trying to set a record for the most ejections in a season). You now only get 1 freebie unsportsmanlike conduct penalty as the 2nd one is an ejection. I guarantee that if this would have happened against a good team that we ended up losing too, the (people are pussies crowd) would have a different tune. Luckily it was a crappy team that we destroyed (only due to a QB who was doing whatever he could to lose the game). But the deal is, you practice like you play. Riley needs to shore up the stupid penalties very quickly. Let Nebraska have 100 yards in penalties this week with late hits and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties like they did this week and they will lose by 40 points.

I think the crowd that doesn't have a problem with it is the crowd that believes this play is a non-issue based on time and score (rather than it being an uncontrollable random act that "luckily" did not hurt us because of the time and score) while also recognizing that silly penalties will hurt is when commit them in closer games against better opponents. I think most of the folks who think this is a non-issue believe silly things like the ball flip will not happen when the game is on the line. I didn't like that he did it, but I understood that it didn't hurt us and i chose not to get all bent out of shape over it. If you prefer to raise your blood pressure two days after the game ended over inconsequential BS like that play, one which you have absolutely no control over, then have at it.

You are tying Gerry's ball flip to his two ejections (both questionable) for targeting in 2015-16 season. Neither of those had anything to do with him committing an unsportsmanlike act, so, by nature, they're completely unrelated to what happened on Saturday. The ejections were for his actions while making football plays; the USC on Saturday was the only non-football play in the bunch. If he BEGINS to show a trend of taunting opponents or doing other stupid things like that that cost the team, then I'll join you in your frustration. So far, he's not trending.

If Gerry is trying to set a record for most ejections in a season, he'd better get to work. He's 0-1.

You're making a lot of conjecture about the coaching job Riley is doing without knowing any facts about how he addresses unsportsmanlike or other silly penalties with the team. Maybe he doesn't address them at all. Maybe they are addressed by the position coach in a very firm manner.

Funny that most people blamed a QB for doing whatever he could to lose a game for why we lost to Iowa last year. Yet somehow that was not a legitimate excuse for why we lost, but it is for why Wyoming lost to us. Once again yet another example of someone making excuses for other teams that they will never make for us. I wish somebody would explain to me why certain things are a-OK for other teams that aren't for us.

Love Nate and his athleticism. Wish his coverage was a bit stronger, but he's also one of the few starters on D who will potentially be able to run down Oregon's skill players if they get into the open field. It's nice to see our defense running all the way to the ball and playing with some swag for once. Some of these late hits getting called are ridiculous as well.

Love when 40 year olds say someone sucks and needs to grow up. He's still in college, not too many don't have slip ups in college.

He's also a very good player, it's like Nebraska fans love talking trash on their own players. Martinez, Z Lee, Gerry, Armstrong, Bell, Valentine, etc all come to mind.

Someone on here called him the most overrated player on the team today. Just a couple fun facts for anyone who believes that. He now has 203 career tackles. Only the 5th Husker DB with over 200. Others are Mike Brown, Daniel Bullocks, Larry Asante and Tyrone Byrd. He also has 10 career picks. School record is 14. He will be drafted and playing in the NFL next year. Think before you post. Lesson of the day.
He said he expects NU senior safety Nate Gerry to play on Sundays next year.

“Gerry’s a monster,” he said. “Great player, great leader.”

The good news is that it was a from a fan base that was spoiled for years by great play. Out in public those guys have to get that NU fans as a vast majority loved them. Lord was the guy that was the most underappreciated of all those guys. He put up HUGE numbers almost single handedly. IF Frank would have coached better and had better talent, who knows what Lord could have done.

But what would a former blackshirt who played the safety position with 2 national title rings, a run in the NFL with a Super Bowl ring know about anything right?? LOL....I'm sure the keyboard cowboys on here know better!!:rolleyes:o_O
It was still a stupid play. I do remember though one of the Peter brothers ripping the helmet off of an offensive linemen, pick it up, spitting in it and then handing it back to the guy. Of course the O lineman was the one caught when he reacted. Gerry just got caught taunting was all. We need to clean it up going forward or it will cost us a game somewhere.

I can't disagree , good points.

Agree with this. The taunting doesn't mean Gerry is a punk or a bad guy, but I'm glad he got caught and glad he was flagged - because it was a low-class move and now he's unlikely to repeat it when 15 yards could be really costly.

And I can only imagine the meltdown that would take place here if, say, an Ohio State player did the same thing to Tommy Armstrong after an interception. It would not only signal the death of sportsmanship, but the breakdown of society as we know it.
