Minnesota fired football coach Tracy Clayes on Tuesday in wake of the football team's boycott of practices last month. The players were protesting the suspensions of 10 Minnesota players for their alleged roles in a reported gang rape of a female student in September. Clayes went 11-8 after taking over for Jerry Kill in October 2015.

Didnt see that one coming.
They must already have their next guy.
Chip kelly? Winking

will be interesting to see who has any interest in the gopher opening. that place is a mess and has been for quite some time. i am sure gopher fans are thinking Fleck, Kelly, or Miles?

What am I missing? Minnesota is, well, Minnesota. Did this coach cover something up? 11-8 should keep your job at Minny, unless there's more to the story.

Minnesota's current AD Mark Coyle was Boise State's AD from 2011-15, and he hired Bryan Harsin.

Claeys tweeted his support for the players, which publicly aligned him against the administration.

He was hired by the interim AD last year and only had a buyout of $250,000 per remaining season so the time was right for the new AD to get his guy.

They didn't like how he handled the player "strike" situation. He had an opportunity to be a leader and instead he just buddied up to the players without acknowledging that a girl had likely been raped. I also think he wasn't a very coveted coach who happened to land in the role and make a few million because the head guy before him retired due to health concerns. So he has a head job for two years, makes a ton of money and has a sizable buyout package. Not bad.

It my understanding that Fleck said that he would not talk to anybody until his team was done playing. Hence the reason that the Purdue rumors were dispelled. His team's last game was yesterday; an opening at a B1G school occurred today. Coincidence?

He's also been quoted as saying that he would not take the Minnesota job if offered after the season. Just when you think Minnesota is close to being competitive year in and year out then this all happens. Poor gophers.

I think I'm the only football fan not impressed by him.
I'm impressed with his Recruiting chops, rrthusker, but I think I know where your head's at ... think his shtick would grow thin pretty quickly if subjected to it day after day after day. Kinda Harbaugh-esque, to me. Not sure how many highly-recruited kids at P5 kids consider themselves to be just "Rowers (even though I like the symbolism of it)."

Rumor is that PJ Fleck is their main target.
That's been main name since this whole fiasco came up. Local sports radio thinks they have Fleck in the bag, I doubt they do they tend to way over rate the job they have.

Tracy Clayes was railroaded. None of the players were charged with anything, then three months later the university suspends the players. Maybe the smart thing would have been for him to throw up his hands and say it was a "university matter" instead of supporting his players, but I admire his loyalty to the players. Back in the day we had a thing called "due process" and universities generally followed decisions made by local and/or campus law enforcement.

He had no chance of keeping his job the minute he crossed the new AD and new Pres, when he split ranks with his bosses it was all over. And this not about what's legal it's about a student code of conduct on cam pass that has a deplorable record on sexual assault cases. Claeys had virtually no support in the media or public in MSP. UofM has had 1,000 cases of reported sexual assault since 2010 and until this fall had not even prosecuted a single case, had they not fired Claeys the AD and Pres would have been gone. The fact he was stupid enough to send that insensitive tweet showed he had no understanding of the situation and was just not in anyway qualified to lead a P5 football program. If you don't see that you don't understand the environment in MN at this time as it relates to sexual assault.

I think he's even said before that one of the reasons he's been successful at Western Michigan is that the administration lets him do his thing and doesn't interfere. That's not going to be the case at a lot of P5 schools. His intensity, high energy and motivational speeches might work at a place with little football tradition and little pressure to win, but at a place where expectations are higher, it would get old really quickly, especially if he doesn't win. I'm not particularly a fan of him myself.

His name has been mentioned.

Has a $6.5M buyout this year. Not saying Minnesota wouldn't pay it. I think Klieman at NDSU might be a better candidate.. well, younger. Will be interesting, but have heard Bohl has no interest. Doesn't mean much though.

If I were Bohl I would stay at Wyoming.

Easier conference to win. No negative baggage to deal with like Minnesota has now. No brand new state of the art stadium that the powers that be are going to expect you to be able to recruit and win at unrealistic levels.

I guess my point is that dudes who are head coaches and have worked their way up from position coach to coordinator to FCS head coach to FBS head coach don't all of a sudden settle when a P5 job opens up. Especially a job he wanted when they hired Kill.

Minnesota is clearly a better job than Wyoming, but that doesn't mean he should leave Wyoming for Minny. It looks like Bohl has Wyoming headed in the right direction and winning big at Wyoming could open up better jobs than Minnesota in the near future.

He is 58 years old. I understand what you are saying but how much success does he have to have at Wyo and how long before he gets that better job?

At what point does he age himself out? What if this is the biggest job he gets?

Chip Kelly is a great example of a guy who paid the price for taking a job he shouldn't have and paid the ultimate price shortly thereafter. He would have made the same exact same bank with a much better team and chance of winning elsewhere. Nobody is going to win very much at Minnesota, and Bohl probably wanted that job while he was at NDSU, and who knows if he feels the same now that he's at Wyoming making 1.4mil a year I think it is?? Now having said all that if he's just chasing the bank then by all means take the job because it will pay more, but how much more, and what is your happiness worth to you?

Paid what price? He was paid to coach in the NFL, it didn't work out. If he wants to coach in college again he will be at the top of the list of many ADs. No one says Nick Saban paid the the price because he failed in the NFL.

Chip prefers the NFL, he wanted to coach in the NFL, he did not like CFB. If he had waited for a better job he would still be coaching in his preferred league. Now, since he took the 49er job, which was a huge mistake, and got fired after one year and looked bad doing it, I doubt the NFL will give him another opportunity, and if they do it will be of the Buffalo variety. IE-Another place he can't win at and now he's viewed as an even bigger failure.

No more NFL jobs, horrible reputation, I'd call that paying a price. YMMV.

I guess. I just don't think he would ever find a fit in the NFL. His next job was always going to be a rebuilding job.

Anyway back to Bohl. I still say he is getting to the age that you never know when that last P5 job is going to come. People thought Riley at 60 was too old for Nebraska.

YMMV? Lol. First time I have seen that used on this board.
