Mike Riley named assistant head coach at Oregon State

Maybe Eichorst put in a good word for him?

Seriously...good luck to Coach Riley and I am glad he has a chance to finish his career with a positive ending.

charlie mcbride helped me understand the difference between pac and nebraska football. and the difference needed in coaching.

"Riley had two other offers to coach with Power Five schools, 'and I almost took one of them,' he said. 'This deal came up in just the nick of time. I had to tell both (schools), I have to do this. I have to do it because of my feelings for Jonathan, for Oregon State, and because of my wife, my daughter and my grandkids.'"

It would be interesting to know who the other two schools were.

Guarantee you they were NOT head coaching job offers. No way he is ever a HC at a P5 school again imo.

From reading this article and other articles where Riley said he would accept an assistant coaching position, I assume they were assistant coaching jobs.

Never really good?? They just had the nations top ranked defense. Held multiple teams well below thier average and many to their lowest yardage totals of the season.

Not sure how you consider a game that Wisc. Was within one score for all but the first series of the second half wasnt close.

Lol they had a bottom 10 schedule and I watched that BIG Title game from start to finish, Osu was miles better. Wisky kept it close because they run the best. JT Barrett played horrendous, missing wide open TDS left and right. Wisky was never good. Watch as Miami wrecks them.

I have to agree. Watching them in person I was shocked at how highly ranked they were they played NU. 17-17 middle of the 3rd quarter before they took over the game. They looked incredibly average. On the other hand, the west is so pathetic and weak, it is hard for a team like them to not win out and you are going to get rankings in that case.

Comparing that to watching ohio state when they came to town was night and day different. They looked for real in all aspects.

All the more reason I've hated the last 4-5 years of Husker football thinking on how far we've sunk.

I think Riley would have a lot to offer as a guy in the box relaying scheme etc down. The guy knows x's and o's and could really help a young head coach on game day. It will be a weird dynamic IMO but obviously Smith welcomes having a guy with his knowledge on staff. It sure as heck won't hurt their recruiting.

good luck to him but surprising move on OSU's part - not sure all the beaver fans are on board with this either
When saying ALL, it's easy to say "They aren't", but then there are Nebraska Fans that didn't, and still don't want Scott Frost either.

Most OSU Fans will welcome Coach Riley back, for the 3rd time. And they will...because he is one of theirs!

I think the Oregon state fan base is a little more split than the NU fan base on their hiring decision. That said Riley is a good man and can offer a lot in the assistant role. But how much is the issue, keep in mind there are still some players on that team Riley recruited and coached.

I am also reminded how bad some of the hires have been at NU, here is a coach who even this program, which arguably he is one of their best coaches ever, does not hire him back as a HC but as an assistant.

It would have made more sense for me for them to have named him a consultant. Just pay the man to break down film and hang around for advice to a young head coach. Him actually being an assistant seems a little awkward but if anybody can pull it off, Riley can. I don't think there's an ounce of ego in him. I bet he'll be a very good assistant. I would probably put him in the box on game days.

Unbelievable interview, “I’ll look into that...” smh
Must listen to for all Husker football fans....
well, McBride said riley ran it more like a pro program, where he maybe assumed everyone knew the fundamentals..which I can kinda see cause riley did coach the pro's and to some extent pac schools do seem to run more pro passing offenses. which considering NU's history with the run, doesn't seem like a match.

Thanks for the response. I have talked to three Oregon Friends since the announcement of Coach Riley's hire at OSU. They were all happy to have him and see him come back.

Granted three people don't give a total picture of their entire Fan Base and one of them is an Oregon Fan and not a OSU followers.

Only time will tell. I am glad he got to go back. He obviously has a following or I would find it difficult for them to bring him home for the third time.
