McGuire out as WR Coach

You brought up the bowl game. Threads morph as they progress. People should be a helluva lot more worried about the defense than what the role of a demoted position coach will be. HE DOESN’T MATTER ANYMORE! Sorry to shout but the angst over his role is silly.
Based on the first round of hiring, I'm not that worried about the defense. Compared to the offense and special teams the defensive coaching staff has been a godsend.

Mickey’s unfortunate situation put Rhule behind the 8 ball on his offensive staff. McGwire was hired after most of the assistant jobs nationally had already been filled. The pressure on Trev to somehow retain Mickey screwed up the timing of most of our offensive hires. For whatever reason Rhule thought he could roll with Satt and McGwire instead of replacing them last winter.
He brought Thomas in to work with the young QBS, which was good, but missed the fact that Satt has a tin ear for playcalling, which is bad.

People are very worried about the defense. Some of the more astute among us realize we don't have room for deadweight on offense when that's what we'll likely have to rely on to win games next year.
Correct. Offense needs to carry to load next season if we want to add three wins to our win total next season. I said the same thing prior to TW’s departure.

I agree. Look what Mike Riley did with his first season chance. Got to play a ranked team even though we only had five wins. Team did good the next year after that bowl win over ucla
My concern is that losing the bowl game and ending with a 6-7 record would erase any good feelings about getting to a bowl game in the first place. I think Jimmy Carter's word "malaise" would probably describe the attitude among the players and fans IMO IF we were to lose. Win that game and the psychology of the situation is way different.

Tom always said that the bowl game was important for setting the tone for the off season.
Tom isn't here anymore and kids have different mentalities now. It's nice for the practice reps and that is it. The transfer portal and opting out will soon make these games even more shitty than they already are. If the game is in Charlotte I'll still go, but bowls are meh now with the playoff.

Obviously I want to see a win as does the team. But ultimately I’m more concerned about the practice reps for our young guys. An extra month of potential practices is huge for our development and much more important than the W IMO … but hopefully we can have both!

It's just like recruiting, MR has a job to find someone better at every position coaches too. They have a job to make sure he can't. If we can upgrade WR coach with the guy from UNC then you absolutely do it! Same goes for every position coach. TW included. MR job is to upgrade as often as possible. New DL and New DC should also be upgrades. Snow and Elijah Robinson paired with Galloway as wr coach would have me dancing in the streets at the recruiting and coaching upgrades. As far as coordinators go we can step down 20 notches on defense and the overall coordinators would be upgrades given Satt isn't still one.

Nothing is more important than the win. If a team has had 8 straight years of losing records, as it would if NU loses the bowl game, then big deal we've lost for 8 straight years.

But, if NU wins, 7-6 just looks different than 6-7. It just does.

This all depends what bowl game we get and who the opponent is.

Playing in the Music would be would be playing 9-3 team most likely Mizzou or pretty good 8-4 LSU.

Pinestripe playing Boston College would be a more formidable opponent.

Your attempt at a defense just makes everything sound all the more incompetent. Hope you realize that.

A loss would be a loss no matter who or where we play. With White leaving we better hope the team we play has a lot of staff turnover too. I kind of have the same gut feeling I did after the UCLA loss . We need a win to rid the program of that indigestion.

I think the Iowa game already did that. The Bowl Game is a chance to reverse it, to some degree.

Galloway from UNC would be a good one.

Here is another likely candidate. He played for Dana at WVU and coached for him at WVU and Houston, and has only been in the UK for one season.

I believe we difference of opinion, mainly because of the landscape today in college football with players opting out and coordinator’s leaving to another program..

Let's hope it's TO and not JoePa........ As far as I know the only coverup TO did was a player's gun and never for a rapist pedophile.
Rhule is not shy about how much he idolizes joe pa

sandusky was his position coach at pennst

didn't hear much about TO's involvement in the program this year after lots of input last year

He said recently that he talks to TO after every game. I understand his admiration of Joe but find it a little weird when he talks about it openly. Joe was from a generation that swept things like pedophilia and incest under the rug never to be talked about. Joe did a tremendous amount of good things for PSU and his players but looking the other way when it became obvious Sandusky was raping boys is an unforgiveable sin. I wish Rhule would never utter that name again.

Thank you Alibi Ike.

Maybe sticking around and learning from a more experienced coach will turn him into a better coach. Just because he was thrown into a role too early doesn’t mean we should hate him. I’m sure he’s way ahead of his years and has potential to turn into a good one although he isn’t yet. Maybe this adjust role will help him grow and he will be a great coach for us one day
Look nobody hates the kid. But you don't hire a kid to do a man's job.

The fact these receivers showed no improvement over 21 games is all you have to know. If he wasn't teaching them sharp routes or to get separation then he could have at least taught them how to block efficiently.

There are no perfect position coaches, but there are aspects of each position that have to be mastered as a coach.
When Dana says the WR blocking is "embarrassing" that says what the hell this kid been teaching them, if anything?

Just because guys dog a coach, assistant, player or program doesn't mean they hate them. Hate is strong word.

If they don't like what is said, then show tremendous improvement and shut us up.

A large part of the problem is that clearly McGwire didn't know what he didn't know and apparently Satt couldn't help him. I suspect McGwire learned more in 3 weeks with Dana than than he had in 2 seasons with Satt.
