McCarthy on Michigan scandal

Why did he resign?
straight from the source:

"I love the University of Michigan and its football program," Stalions told The Athletic. "And I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I've had to work with the incredible student athletes, coach [Jim] Harbaugh and the other coaches that have been a part of the Michigan football family during my tenure. I do not want to be a distraction from what I hope to be a championship run for the team, and I will continue to cheer them on."

You get weirder by the minute

This all goes away with technology if CFB chooses to make it happen.... BTW, Was I the only one who found it ironic (likely planned) that the school for the deaf had a commercial during the game for a helmet with a screen in it to help with calling plays for the disabled? I believe that was 100% predictive programming
My wife works with the center from that commercial!

if you want to call a graduate of the Naval Academy and Marine Corps captain a lying scumbag cheater with zero evidence to back you up, that's your right as an American that he gave 5 years of his life to defend.

Wait, so Kong is slobbing on the knob of arguably THE B1G team now? Yikes lmao the jokes just write themselves at this point 🤣
this guy making unfounded allegations without reading a single word I've written in this thread is honestly quite fitting.

a reminder that I picked UW to beat Mich in the title game before the semis even kicked off.

also worth noting for those who think I'm rooting for "THE B1G team"

(posted Nov 25th):
Harbaugh has made a mockery of this conference

absolutely hilarious

the enemy of your enemy is your friend.

rhule advised the ncaa , mic in the helmets now..they have been informed
and they tried it out in several bowl games

do not be surprised if we see new helmets this winter fitted with mics

too many bleating sheep hating the player when their ire should've been pointed at the game all along

typical

Sure teams steal signs. During games. What there is no evidence that other teams do, and what has been outlawed since 1996 is sending representatives to other teams practices or games and stealing the signs prospectively. There is plenty of evidence that Michigan did this. In fact the NCAA or big 10, I forget which told Michigan They were going to notify the rest of the teams on their schedule this year that they had been stealing signs and the Michigan brass objected to it.

From the Old People Bureau in the Tea Room on the fifth floor of the Miller and Paine building at 12th and O Streets:

Remember how Osborne "signaled" plays? He'd mutter something to a split end or wingback on the sideline, the player would run into the huddle to tell the quarterback and the quarterback would tell the rest of the team.

Foolproof.

Hell, in the 1971 Game of the Century, Devaney and Osborne let quarterback Jerry Tagge call the plays in the huddle with little to no interference from the coaches and then audible at the line if needed.

From the Sports Illustrated story after the game:

But when that last offensive drive of 74 yards had to be accomplished, Devaney was back in character. He was willing to let Tagge handle it. Devaney stayed calm. So did Tagge. So did they all.

Four plays and two minutes later it was second down at the Oklahoma six, and Tagge, who had been constantly glancing at the clock, called time-out. He knew that only a busted play could ruin Nebraska. Tagge wanted to chat with Devaney.

As Tagge remembers it, their conversation went something like this:

Tagge: "I know we can score, coach, but I've been worried about eating up the time."

Devaney: "We're going for the touchdown. There won't be any ties."

Tagge: "We'll get it."

Devaney: "What's your best play?"

Tagge: "I think it's the off-tackle with Jeff."

Devaney: "O.K. Let's run it without any mistakes."

They did just that.

For real? I’ve never heard that

Yep.

Watch the game below. We rarely subbed on offense, and we weren't running players in with play calls, and Tagge never looks to the sideline. One play ends, the players go back to the huddle, Tagge calls a play, they go to the line of scrimmage.

Of course, Osborne as the OC (not a title at the time, but he had the job) game planned before the game, and he probably sent down suggestions while we played defense, and during timeouts, but it's clear from one play to the next it was up to Tagge what we ran.

Reminds me of the time someone suspected an OU spy of watching the Huskers practice from high up in the stadium.

When Devaney was told about it he suggested the guy move closer down to field level where he could see better and maybe explain to Nebraska what they were doing "Because we sure as hell don't know."
😂

used to care.

then they beat Penn St, then Ohio St, then won the B1G CCG, then advanced to the national championship. Michigan is just a great team that plays big and strong in the trenches, they earned their way this year.

that said, it'd still be hilarious if they get this year vacated.
This is where I am with this.

They beat OSU at full strength and Bama. That leads me to believe whatever they were doing didn't impact games.

if most of yall were honest, it's not this "integrity of the game" thing you care about, it's the notion that they won games that they shouldn't have.

the fact is, they've been under scrutiny for half the season, and they played some of their best football under that scrutiny with the spotlight on them. they won their games fair and square by beating teams up.

it took Harbaugh 4 years to take Stanford from laughing stock to nearly top of the Pac. It's really not unreasonable that by year 7 at Michigan, he took them to the B1G Championship.

I should add, I would like Michigan to face punishment.

Not because I'm upset that what they did was wrong, but because I'm a hater and seeing successful teams get punished brings me perverse joy.

I would guess that over the last 3 years, michigan has won 2 games they weren't favored to win

maybe 1

I think it most definitely impacted games. I also believe they’re talented enough that they would have won all their games without cheating. But they did cheat.

I’ve never understood the big deal here. They never snuck into a practice. They bought tickets to a game in the public and scouted out the play calls. None of this has been any different than watching film to me. If that’s how you’re gonna call your plays, that’s your problem. That’s wide-open for cameras to see in front of everybody. You have a problem with it, go back to the huddle.

If they wanna expose something, let’s take a real hard look at the back door deals between ESPN and the SEC… But nobody’s willing to do that.
You honestly can’t be this stupid right? It s against the rules to live scout someone.and no when you are watching film it doesn’t show the sideline so you can see what plays are being sent in .

if it's not osu, usc, sec paying players under the table for decades...or michigan with the tampering and spies, or ut paying off the commissioner and refs, or baylor and oklahoma lacking institutional control or penn state, msu, nw...sigh

it's hard to keep track of these villains..That partly why I'm a NU fan..everything is straight and above board

Of course I know it’s against the rules (came off a brutal call when I posted that earlier). To me, even though it’s against the rules, I believe it’s honestly as common as big programs paying players before NIL. With everyone moving to that type of offense and play calling, it’s not that hard for anyone to film and grab play calls. It’s just going to come with it. Michigan got caught, but I think there are a ton of teams doing it.

You're all missing the best part. J.J. spouting off about it when his coach came out with a long lawyerized statement claiming no knowledge of the situation.
One of them is a big time liar.

you honestly think a fuzzy picture of a guy in sunglasses on the CMU sideline is "evidence"?

giphy.gif
The fuzzy picture showing the guy tjlhat looks just like CS with the ray bans video recorder and duct tape on the shoes?
