Hope he doesn't overbulk and lose a step. These kids must be eating steak dinners every single night.

Muscle weighs more than fat. Not meaning he was. Adding muscle adds weight. If done correctly he should not slow down.

The "bulk" label is a myth. I can't tell you how many parents said they didn't want their kids to lift weights because they were afraid their kids would bulk up and slow them down. Duval would never let that happen.
I don't know. Taylor Martinez bulked up a bit and he definitely lost a step.

He’s putting on good weight courtesy of the strength program. Or he’s been eating at Raising Canes everyday!

Muscle doesn't slow people down. As a matter of fact it increases potential for power and speed as a result. Fat slows you down, muscle makes you faster. Weight has nothing to do with it.

Diminishing returns certainly do exist when it comes to putting muscle on and getting faster. Ahman Green showed up one fall camp at around 227 pounds, and he admitted that he overdid the training. He definitely looked a step slower on the field early that season. I believe Dan Alexander was actually told to stop lifting because he was putting on so much muscle. He was already 6'0" 250 pounds.

The training staff is on top of these guys though, so I'm not worried. I believe I read they have a guy come in and measure their bone sizes, and they have a good idea of what their projected optimal weight is.

They can change the work out routine a bit. I know power lighting, i.e. more weight fewer reps, along with more non weight strengthening, pull us ect., will prevent weight gain while adding strength.

This x1000. The unfortunate thing in high school is laziness towards nutrition. The "bulk" is due to the fact your adding fat on top of that muscle.

I think you mean dense...pound of muscle and a pound of fat are both a pound...but fat (looking down at my belly) is nice an fluffy! Muscle isn't.
Reminds me of one of the Tampa Bay DTs in the early 2000s (I want to say Booger McFarland, I don't think it was Warren Sapp who said this) who said something like "muscles can strain, bruise, and tear, but you can't hurt fat."

My guess is that a good portion of that weight is going to his lower body. I would also guess much of the lifting is geared toward more explosive types of moves for a combination of power and quickness. If done properly, he should gain weight and gain a step, not lose one.

Dan Alexander had thighs like tree stumps. Tough dude.

Yes hopefully its lower body. If he gains in his rear, thighs and calves(sp) he should be good, if he's gained 10 lbs in upper body only it could slow him down.

Could they gain a step if a surgeon would remove the pancreas, one kidney, and half the liver of these athletes? That's the real question... For the team!!!

Duval had tweeted that increasing muscle mass makes you faster and stated the same in articles while are UCF that muscle is engine that drives your body.
Here is a tweet of his regarding Griffin after his 40 time at the NFL combine.

1. Taylor never lost a step because of bulking up. He encountered ankle and a lingering foot issue.

2. And while Taylor Martinez was never blessed with great vision or agility, his straight line speed was still pretty special even after "losing some steps." I will gladly take that type of speed from Adrian, especially because "A-Mart" has a LOT more wriggle in the open field.

That's what I see too. I think Tmart's acceleration even blows Amart away but it looks like Amart is a far smoother and balanced runner. Not a knock on either one.....both are/were terrific weapons.

That's so true. I've seen lots of guys lose a few pounds while working out and their arms and legs look smaller by in reality they only lost a layer of fat.

Baseball or more likely basketball kids. The basketball kids will look for any way out of the weightroom once AAU season starts.

I don't know about not having agility, TMart 's TD run against Wisky in BIG 10 Championship pretty much debunked that theory of him having no agility as that run trumped Crouch's against Mizzou and it was on a way bigger stage. Just sayin'. If ya don't believe me watch my sig vids. TMart was just as quick and fast laterally as he was North to South. Martinez was also faster than Crouch as well!
