Martinez to the Lions as FA

I've zero issues with the kid and I'm glad he ended his college career on a high note and I like Kansas State (that program just over achieves year after year)....but he's cannon fodder for the scout team, at best, for the Lions.
You can win games with their schedule year in year out. Big 12 been down for years and wait til okie and horn are gone

I am not an Adrian hater, but I will be surprised if he makes the team. I just do not see him as a NFL qb.
He's not going to beat out Hooker, the rookie out of Tennessee. His best shot is for Sudfeld to get hurt or just get beat out by Hooker. If that happens, then maybe the Lions keep Martinez as a #3 but it's unlikely. His best shot is to hang on as a practice teamer and move up to #3 next year. He is not an NFL QB but he might be good enough to be on a roster for a while.

He played better at KSU, though his passing still wasn't NFL level.
Ummmm. You’re about 2 weeks late. I doubt he makes first roster cut down.

if any of those guys get injured they’ll sign somebody off of another practice squad before they roll with Martinez. He’s not an NFL QB.

I agree. But it's not like every roster has three legit pro caliber QBs. Chris Oladokun out of SDSU was KC's 3rd teamer last year and Tanner Morgan is the #3 QB with the Steelers at the moment.

Yep...basically to be that 3rd guy you need to shut the **** up, probably say that you want to get into coaching, never say "no" to anything (like my prom date), and always be first in and last to leave. Do that for a few years after making the team and then you are known around the league as a "good team guy"

Couldn't agree more. And if you don't want to be that kind of guy, you better be a starter. There's a reason that Carson Wentz is still a free agent. Same with Mason Rudolph (although my Steelers might still take him back anyway). These guys are good enough to be on a roster. But if they are me first and get a reputation for not being helpful to the starting QB, a lot of teams just aren't going to want them around.

Yep! 3rd team QB is basically a throw away position. If they keep you it is not because they think you will turn into a great starter someday...it is because you are not annoying and do what you are asked.

I could see him making the BC Lions and having a career with them.

And I don’t mean that as an insult. There are much worse ways to spend your 20s than playing in the CFL.

Lions fan here. If Adrian has any shot at making the team it's bc Dan Campbell, who spent half a decade with Taysom Hill, wants his own Taysom Hill in the Detroit. Hooker is likely redshirting this year and Goff offers nothing in the QB run game so it's possible albeit unlikely.

Special teams will be critical as well. Martinez would have to show value there as well. Their personal protector spot on punts is open bc C.J. Moore bet on NFL games.

Qb don’t play special teams , and I like Adrian first class kid but he is not even in the Same world as Tysom Hill.

My thought exactly was that he needs to head north.

Taysom Hill has played Special Teams. In fact in 2018 and 19 he did some heavy lifting for the Saints on ST. I do agree that Hill has more Juice than Martinez. The point remains, if Adrian has any shot of making the roster it's as an offensive weapon not a traditional QB.

I don’t believe Adrian has that mindset.

Not understanding what they would do with his talent set. He has no pro type skills. He was, at best, a conditional qb in college. He has some pretty good raw athletic talent but inept field vision.

He could be a wildcat, short yardage, goal line qb, and also line up as a rb, te or wr for some gadget plays. Maybe line up on punts as a protector and possibly some trick plays. He seemed humble and a team player.

i really dont think any team would even consider using amart as a wildcat.. not that big, not that fast, not very good at making quick decisions and fumbles too much.

inept decision making as well
I think that ties in with poor field vision. I remember he would simply miss wide open receivers by throwing the ball away or throwing to someone not open. It manifested itself in his runs also. He is a strong and fast runner but he often looked to be taking it home and would unexplainably switch directions and end up not getting much.
I don't know that you can learn something like that. Its probably an athletic gift.

Obviously that won't have much value in the NFL, so again, I can't see what they are going to do with that.

I thought the K-st coach used him brilliantly. I believed from observing that he had a one and only designated receiver and he could throw a pretty decent pass if he didn't have to look for it or make decisions. That being said I though KSU's offense operated much more effeciently once he got hurt (of course) with the other qb.

At KSU, Martinez averaged the lowest yards/attempt of his career. He also attempted the least amount of passes/game of his career.

He “played better” because they took the ball out of his hands. Their coach is smarter than our former coach in this regard.

AM is a consummate teammate. I can see how he can add value to a squad in the locker room & on the practice field. It’s pretty rare to hire a guy off the street for peanuts who’s taken 2,000+ snaps at the P5 level.

Given his background both on/off the field, I think AM has a future in coaching if that’s something he’d like to pursue.

His ability to get up after countless knockdowns is worthy of everyone’s respect. Tough kid with a lot of character who can relate across a very broad spectrum.

Yep!

Won't shock me if he makes the team or a team...gets. a few years in of never playing and then uses those connections to get into coaching.

I don't get it. What would a pro team do with him? Put him out on the field and forfeit their passing attack because he's a 'team player'? I have strong doubts they are intently harboring him because they want to help him get started in coaching.

Maybe they want to use him to have their defenders practice fumble recoveries.

He got a FA deal based in athletic ability. Pretty sure he will be in the long list of cuts when it's time to trim the roster.

It is not like he throws the ball right into the ground on every attempt. He has a ton of experience, you can get him for cheap and you don't expect your 3rd string guy to end up playing but he clearly could.

Here are some 3rd string guys

I know some Husker fans have to hate on him but come on.

The problem is that most 3rd string QBs kept on the practice squad are developmental type guys who have legit NFL arms and accuracy. AMart is a camp arm. That’s all

Come on what?
Here is where he stood nationally in number of individual fumbles:
2018 (2nd) 12 fumbles total
2019 (8th) 8 fumbles
2020 (6th) 7 fumbles

Three top ten finishes as an individual in the number of fumbles. He had an astonishing 36 career fumbles. Fumble once in the NFL and you are in a doghouse, twice, and they are talking about cutting your clumsy self in the boardroom.
The real bad thing is they seemed to come at the worst times.

Some (bad) Husker fans just can't seem to be able to handle simply being excited and congratulatory for him. Regardless of how it MIGHT or might not shake out for him.

Good luck AM. I hated your mistakes, but you were a Husker nevertheless and you did what you could with an inept coaching staff (which is where we should place blame, always, in regards to our players during those years).

Sure but clearly the lions are more than willing to give him a chance. Sooooo...

As a Lion's fan I believe:

1 - they have no interest in AM as a traditional
QB
2 - despite the meathead persona Dan is pretty thoughtful. And he and GM Brad Holmes are tactical. The inability of their 2022 team to do QB run when it was the clear play was problematic at times
3 - Dan coached Hill and thinks highly of him and the impact of that sort of specialist can have
4 - organization is high character centric. Adrian from all accounts is a high quality young man.
5 - they do more ST trickery than most any NFL team. AM's potential in the third phase will probably be the determining factor of whether he makes the roster.

So if he's capable and willing to be a core special teams guy AND add sub package college run game stuff then Dan would likely be into that.

Would be wise to attempt to scheme against QB runs after Fields went for 300+ rushing in the two games he faced the lions
