Thoughts? This is really being hashed over on the talk shows and ESPN. Who knows if he makes a difference last night, but the timing of the decision seems really strange.

There sure seemed to be a BUNCH of whiffs on coverage and tackling in the Pat's secondary last night. We'll never know if he would have made a difference or not.

I don’t know what’s being said on espn but I was fuming while watching the game. Kept saying things to the effect ‘I hope it’s worth it , Bill!’ in my whiskey induced inebriated state. That guy has been a consummate teammate not to mention a SB hero. It’s Bill’s way or the highway, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right way.

THIS!!!!

I have no clue at all, but is this a doghouse issue? I just assumed it was an undisclosed injury or something... if it was a doghouse issued that is pretty pathetic, and may have easily cost them the game.

Hearing talk that he missed curfew and was caught with weed in his possession. That would definitely explain things other than the fact that they still had him suit up.

Very stupid on Butler's part if true but benching him for that is cutting off the nose to spite the face and very well cost them the game.

He did something I assume. But if your going to play him on special teams only. Thats a weird punishment. Especially when Foles is torching you all over the field

Ha ha... if they benched all the players that smoke weed.... would there be a game??

I heard the same on 1620. They also said that there may have been a blowup between him and the coaching staff.

I'm probably wrong, but you can't escape the feeling that Belichick thinks he could take Brady and the IWCC roster and win a super bowl. No question he's a great coach, but sooner or later his constant cutting/trading/benching of good players has to cost them something. I heard Cowherd saying the same thing essentially... and that worries me because I usually think he's full of crap.

And yet, all Belichek does is keep winning. If you have rules and consequences laid out and you let it go even one time for a player, star or no star, then you have just lost the credibility of your rules forever. Belichek knows his program is bigger than one player or one game - even if it is the Super Bowl. He's not only working on winning this one, he's working on winning the ones to come.

But how stupid can a guy be when you have one game left, you know the rules and the consequences (I presume), you have 5 months to do whatever the hell you want after this one game, and still you can't do the right thing? Suck it up and accept your consequence. You let a lot of people down, including most of all yourself. learn from it and hope the hell you get a chance to get there again

The entire second half all I could think was, god damnit Belicheck they are tearing the secondary apart, I don't care what Butler did just put him in.

If he was caught with weed it makes sense, but still hurts.

heard he also went off on the staff when they caught him.
This story makes sense to me. If a guy is insubordinate AFTER being caught with drugs and missing curfew, well that makes it a tough call to play him. If you have standards, and many winning programs do, I think the guy sits. It's his own fault.

I agree. If there are rules, you know them, and then violate them, you place the person who makes the rules in a tough spot for them to maintain their credibility. The only thing that makes me question it is, if this is the reason, and you don’t say something like “violation of team rules”, then HCBB looks stupid. Unless he doesn’t care and just figured the truth would leak out.

I withdraw my comment about cutting off the nose to spite the face. Moronic of Butler to miss curfew, get caught with weed and be indignant about it. He didn't really give the Hoodie any other choice.

If this is accurate about Butler, stupidity is his problem. There's no reason for him to do what is being alleged here. This morning I heard that he was late getting to Minnesota because of illness and so he got in a day late. If that's true then he should have played if what's being alleged here happened he should grateful that he saw the field on anything other than a television.

I dont believe it.
Weed is not addicting I hear. Or harmful in any way.
Since it isn't addicting, no way would a player about to start in the Super Bowl, with five months of freedom afterward, on a team that is not afraid to punish for infractions, choose to have it. Only an addictive substance would necessitate the need to run the risk in such situations.
Therefore I don't believe it.

BTW I haven't heard a thing about weed, I really don't think it was, my post above aside.

Well I hear people sometimes make bad decisions for reasons other than their being addicted.

Hope dat blunt was worth it MB. Not sure him playing changes the result but 1 or 2 more 3rd down stops by the Pats would have been huge.

I agree that its addictive and damaging. Just like alcohol.

Had the Pats won nobody would be talking about this. I doubt he would have changed the outcome of the game, again. The better team won.

So is the story that he was using marijuana and got caught but had he not been insubordinate then he would have started in the game? Also, if the drugs and the insubordination were so severe, why use him on special teams? Wouldn't the punishment have been to suspend him from the game?

Right. That part just makes no sense.

It really doesn’t make any sense. Not to mention the whole marijuana story seems to have been perpetrated by Brandon Browner, who I wouldn’t consider reliable. Bill is not always consistent with his reasoning and I don’t think he is beyond pettiness.

I don't need to keep telling myself anything. I let my opinion be dictated by the science and the professionals who deal with addiction, not the opinions of know-it-all posters on football message boards.

Last I heard Randy was suffering from depression and self-medicating with pot. If I were going to do a controlled study on whether a substance was addicting I would avoid subjects who have mental health and dependence issues. I also wouldn’t draw any grand conclusions from them.

To me that seems rather obvious, but then again I’m not the type of person to conclude from a story that may or may not be true that the person must have a dependence issue whenever he makes a bad decision, which, again, may or may not involve a controlled substance at all.
