Malachi Coleman

there will be a lot of excuses this year. some legitimate.

I honestly don't know how many retained head coaches get to bring in new coordinators at all 3 positions in a single offseason.

can't be many.

I suspect the consensus expectation to be somewhere around 6-6 or 7-5 again this year. and lots and lots of "progress".
Too lazy to look it up but isn't the schedule supposed to be easier this season?

Pure projection on my part but Satt was so bad and DH is such an upgrade I think my cellar for this season is nine games.

One thing to remember, is that Satterfield was not Rhule’s first choice to be the OC. And has been discussed, Mickey Joseph would’ve been the wide receivers coach if not for the incident that did or did not happen at his house.
Rhule hired Nov 26, 2022
Satt hired Dec 1, 2022

pretty quick turnaround for someone who was "not his first choice"

Rhule also neglected to hire a quarterback coach - the only program in America to do so

When they leave for more money, somebody has to fill that position. When you get someone better, that’s usually considered a good thing.

Unless you’re just trying to stir the pot.

he was tossed aside once we hired Banks & Neyor

Rhule for some reason had him pegged for a redshirt before spring ball last year. never made sense.

not sure he got a fair shake from the worst OC and WR coach in the nation (Rhule's handpicked guys)
Because he wasn't that great imo.

Even with the redshirt situation, he still could've played 4 games had he been good enough.

While I don't agree with some of what Kong says, he's spot on here. I was willing to give Satt and McGuire a shot because I wanted to trust Rhule's judgement on his staff picks. Satt had a track record and it wasn't a good one and McGuire didn't have a portfolio we could judge. Both were busts and that's on Rhule.

Foley was different. He had a track record and it wasn't bad but for some reason I can't explain he put absolutely undisciplined special teams on the field at NU that cost us games. I could cut Rhule some slack for that even tho Rhule picked him, but at least he had a basis to pick him. You could argue that Rhule should have seen what was happening with the third phase of our game and cut Foley loose after the first season.

Whatever, I like the staff upgrades at least on paper. This season, no excuses.
McGuire hired after Mickey choked his wife as a deal was being finalized for him.
Satt hired as OC/QBs coach after peetz turned him down for QBs. After one season of that, Rhule tried to lure Holgerson, but he wasn’t ready to commit to a full time gig.
Foley failed to secure adequate long snapping talent and it cost him his job.
Raiola benefits from having a Husker legend as a brother and two nephews that are/will be Huskers. He is also a good young OL coach.

Peetz turned down the QB coach job 9 days after Satt was hired as OC

We did not pursue another, despite the season still being 9 months away

You’re pretty good at rewriting history. Tony White isn’t too bad. Ron Brown is now on staff. Holgerson wasn’t available when MR put together his staff.
Raiola got us the other Raiola.
Didn’t our wide receivers coach come because Mickey‘s wife has issues?
Wasn’t there another wacky problem with one of the other coaches who quit at the last moment?
Smiling Mike got nine wins with Bo’s players.
How many of frosts players have been drafted?
If we do well next year, are you gonna stop this crap?
Are you just gonna find something else to complain about MR?
He said he hates Matt Rhule because he is a Penn State grad

You think Coach Rhule made zero calls prior to his official hire date?

Really?

Just so you know - it’s standard for coaches to line up their entire staff prior to accepting. At the very least, their coordinators and 80% of their assistants.

They don’t take jobs ever and THEN start making calls.

It’s is not likely that Satterfield was his first choice. It’s possible but not likely. Same with many on his staff.

All the more reason it’s likely he was.

South Carolina had just scored their more points in a 3 game span in like 50 years, including lighting up their biggest rival.

And Rhule had worked with him before and clearly likes & respects him (god knows why).

He said he hates Matt Rhule because he is a Penn State grad
More specifically because he’s a Joe pa worshiper whose father ran the organization that funneled kids to Sandusky during the years he was shown to have committed his heinous crimes

Do you have Rhule’s phone logs?

You are aware that there were negotiations between Rhules agent and Trev, before the hire?

The actual known information we have supports the fact that Satt was Rhule’s first choice. But yet some of you act like we are crazy for believing that Satterfield was Matt’s first choice and we should “take it easy” on Rhule’s as if Satt was forced on Rhule like it’s some dam conspiracy.

Seems like some of you all don’t believe Matt should be held accountable for anything. Does kidding yourself help you sleep at night? Matt’s sucked since he’s been here. SUCKED. All the excuses in the world can’t overcome that. And let’s not play strawman. Let’s not make excuse after excuse to justify it.

But we’ve got to move on. Only choice we have. he has a very large and long contract so we are stuck with him and he has a chance to fix it. He seems to be trying to do it. Let’s hope he figures it out. That’s all we can do.

And my frustration isn’t really with Rhule, it’s with the delusional Husker fans that praise him and make excuse after excuse for him on his failures.

There may be proof that Satt was MR's first choice but I've never seen a citation for it. You got one?

The Second Mile? Got documentation/a link showing that Dennis Rhule ran it?

Of course:

Matt's parents eventually landed in State College, Pennsylvania. He walked on at Penn State, playing for teams that lost a total of eight games in his four seasons.

His parents knew Jerry Sandusky. Denny worked for the now-disgraced Second Mile organization for a year.

His position - Director.

Yes. He hired him. And about a week after he was hired. It’s the information we know. Anything other than that is speculation. And no matter what rumor or hearsay you've got. Matt still hired Satterfield. Link below for you.

And not only that, he’s now the highest paid TE coach ever. Tell me again how smart Matt is

There was a president of that organization, if you look that up. He only worked for the organization for a year, which was open from 1977 to 2016. He could’ve been director of ministerial services, juvenile hall ministry, God knows what. The organization said it served up to 100,000 kids per year. Bush 41 named it as one of his thousand points of light. A lot of people “knew“ Jerry Sandusky. A lot of people were fooled. It’s the people like Graham Spanier and Joe Pa himself who could’ve done something, but didn’t that screwed up.

Do you hold Jim Jordan responsible for everything that happened at Ohio State’s wrestling program?

You asked, I answered

How you justify it is your business

Anyone think Coleman would have better suited as a Jack OLB type? Just asking because I do.

Have you ever been part of an organization, a family, a group of people where there was something wrong about the culture, but you were not in a position to do anything about it? If not, you’re luckier than I am, and a lot of people on this board.

And for all we know Dennis Rhule was a director at some offsite affiliate and had no idea what was going on.

All kinds of folks from Dick Vermeil to Arnold Palmer were listed on the honorary board of the organization when charges were filed.

Your hatred for all things Rhule, or your desire just to be a d– – k is unsurpassed. And for me that’s saying something.

Get used to kongs hate for coach Rhule! coach Rhule could win a couple of national championships here and Kong would have something to bitch about

You didn't do enough research.

One minute mark:

There's your proof that MR went after Holgorsen first but with little time to assemble a staff he settled for Satt. So Satt was NOT his first choice, and no one here thinks Satt was a good OC. He wasn't, but let's not rewrite history about this OC shit.

And regarding Satt being he highest paid TE coach in the country, if you think he keeps that salary when his contract is up you're an imbecile.

Coleman is a fast, athletic kid that needs to learn how to be a WR in the top conference in CFB. The coaches knew what his need to work on list was after his first year. He had shoulder work done, wasn’t available in the spring, and got passed up by Barney and Lloyd. The addition of Neyor and Banks, plus the fact that Bonner was back in the room and Carter Nelson was on the roster pointed to a RS for him. He got pressed into service before he was ready because of a bunch of wide receiver injuries in 2023. He then got injured and was not available to do work in the spring. So basically he is behind in his trajectory. And I don’t think he took it well and checked out mentally.

no. and luck has nothing to do with it.

honorary board member from a thousand miles away is much different than cashing checks & working directly with Sandusky in the same town during the exact years he was indicted, prosecuted and found guilty of molesting kids in the foundation ('94-'97, the same years our HC was a LB in Sandusky's room).

if posting a simple fact I was asked to post by you makes me a dick in your mind, so be it.

I sense quite a bit of coping taking place here. you're welcome for educating you on this topic.

Rhule was hired right after the 2022 season ended. I do not remember any alternative to him being OC. He was going to coach TE, but Rhule’s QB coach picks fell through. Rhule attempted to get Holgerson to Lincoln after the 2023 season, but Dana said he wasn’t ready to commit to a full time gig. Rhule gets demerits for failing to recognize Satt had a tin ear for play calling, but credit for correcting the mistake.

What this has to do with Matt Rhule is mucho mysterioso.

probably nothing

or, perhaps this experience lends a retrospective eye toward his penchant for collecting & charitably protecting underperforming misfits in his professional life

Coleman wasn’t redshirted because of the Transfer portal guys. Coleman wasn’t ready to see the field. I’m going back to his 4 year high school career and his first years with Neb. He’s a great athlete but a “not ready for primetime” football player. Maybe he will reach his potential at Minnesota but that’s certainly not a given. Again - the first National recruit from Neb since I’ve been following since 1983 that wasn’t a first team all state player. He was a non-factor in the 5 games I saw him play in. Great athleticism doesn’t always translate to great football player. Dave Jensen from Creighton Prep in the late 80s was a great DL athlete. But yet I’ve been told he was referred to by the Neb coaching staff as “looks like Tarzan. Plays like Jane”. This could be Malachi but I wish the best for him. In short - he wasn’t better this past season than the WRs that played. JMHO.

Another example - top 100 recruit Ed Morrow in late 80s/early 90s.

Remember Ed Morrow out of Missouri right? 6'4 225 and could run like the wind supposedly. Was he in the 92 class with T Frazier and Minter and those guys??

Holla

Yes - Top 100 recruit. He may have been in that class. Early 90s. Not sure if same class as Tommie. But if not maybe a yearly earlier or a year later.
