Without that performance management, we’d have waited until the offseason.

I don't remember what you posted that far back or what your screen name was at that time. What did you give Rhule credit for exactly? Playing Haarberg at QB?
Ah yes, it was a complicated web but I believe credit for our bowl win went to our good governor!
Certain posters are very fond of fitting the data the fit their hypotheses. As for Coleman, we had another kid in Zavier Betts who also was uber athletic. The staff dicked around with that kid for a few years, he even leaked over into Rhule's tenure. He ended up being worth a couple of plays in otherwise forgettable seasons.
The portal era and the expanded playoff present an opportunity for more teams to "climb the mountain", but you only have 105 players to do it. Kids that are not working out will be recruited over, not always by kids with more athleticism, but by kids that are actualizing the talent they do have on the field. There were opportunities for Coleman. He had 4 games to participate like the other RS kids, plus the bowl. He could have balled out in practice and given the coaches the trust to take some of Neyor's reps. He could have caught a few balls. Instead, he was no stats for the year.

Oddly, we didn't hear much about his support of pedophiles during that stretch. Winning cures all, I guess, even pedophilia, for you...at least until he does something you disagree with.
We didn’t make it to a bowl game because for the 💯time we didn’t have a adequate QB which included HH..

He was injured in the spring and fell behind Barney, Lloyd and Carter Nelson before the season. In bizarro world, it's something about "fresh, knowledgeable eyes". I just love the old coaches playing favorites line. It's more like coaches like the way a player practices and knows they can trust that player in the game. Or I guess we are to accept that some folks have evaluation skills superior to the coaches just by looking at a computer or TV screen. Hell, the play of the guys that were on the field was substandard at times. Do you think a second year kid that has yet to master the position would have done better? Coleman has game breaking athletic ability. It's insane to think the coaches wouldn't want him on the field. But you have to practice well for coaches to have trust in you.
If anything, Coleman's development was harmed by being pressed into service too early. OTOH, no one had to hold Jacorey Barney's hand. You either are a football player, or you work to become one. The great thing about the transfer portal is kids that have burned bridges with the coaches at their school can move along to another. So good luck to Malachi.

It's interesting. Neyor's play on the field was at odds with his athletic abilities and I'm sure the coaches would have loved another big bodied guy, especially in the stretch run of the season. Imagine Malachi taking the redshirt thing as an opportunity, keeping his head in the game and learning the little things that make a receiver better. Then Holgerson shows up and is looking or WRs that will block. He could have made a guy like Holgerson notice. But in his mind, he was probably already somewhere else.
I thought the allusion to coaches playing favorites was in the context of Fidone. Dana was not happy with him. I was a bit surprised he got an invite but it will be interesting to see how Fidone does at the combine.
He has never showed that kind of focus and work ethic with football, so it’s no surprise that he was not prepared to impress Dana’s fresh eyes. If he turns into a solid college WR, Fleck will deserve some credit for bringing it out of him.
You want facts . Dana said all Ass coaches fall in love with certain players including myself ( Dana ) when I was an assistant.
Dana said it for sure - however based on the changes made after DH got here, I would say the favorites comment applied more to the TE and RB room and did not necessarily encompass Malachi. My 2 pennies.
He wasn’t healthy until after the Illinois game . Than when they approached him about a Possible RS he pouted and began to slack off in practice and fell further behind. And the player that Dana was talking about in his presser on “ playing favorites “ was Fidone . You claim you only bring facts here. When you finally do it will be a first.
Benched against the Badgers, one catch against Iowa and a nice game against BC. You don't have to wonder about the players Dana likes. He tells you. He wasn't happy with Fidone's practice habits, but then gave him props for his work during bowl prep. Holgerson likes Lindenmeyer because Lindenmeyer is all effort all the time. And I think he will use Haarberg and Nelson in similar ways to one another. Fidone has been bagged on quite a bit on this board, but NFL scouts see a kid with size that can move and has a nice catch radius. They want to see if the two knee injuries took some heat off of his 40 time. It's weird that it seems he was underused this year, but his catch number and yardage actually increased from 2023 to 2024.

Coleman was just further out.
What I am saying is not at all controversial. it was always obvious that we'd lose a potentially good player or two due in part to Rhule's wretched OC & WR coach hires.
I don’t know why you guys get so insanely emotional about the most likely - backed up by the coaches’ words - scenario.

From early September articles, Coleman was available to play. Rhule announcing the RS was reported Sept. 2. Rhule was quoted as follows:
"We have these two big receivers out there that are playing well, and if Malachi can have this year and play four games and play in the postseason, I think he would just be really picking up right where those guys left off.”
“We’re kind of taking the pressure off from him for a little bit and letting him go compete,” Rhule said of Coleman. “I’m sure he doesn’t want to redshirt, I’m sure he wants to play, so if something happens he could play in the next couple weeks.” (italics mine)
So my read on this is that Rhule saw Coleman as being behind several guys in the room (expected for a young kid rehabbing during his first spring practices) and based upon what he saw in fall camp, Malachi wasn't going to get a lot of reps. Something happens could mean if other receivers get hurt, but it could also refer to the coaches waiting for the light bulb to go on in the kids head. As in something like, he isn't forcing us to consider redshirting Carter Nelson, as he is currently behind Carter on the depth chart. He didn't play early against the scrub teams and I think that was originally by design. He could play against the better teams later when a big bodied kid might be needed due to injuries. And he always remained in reserve until needed. It seems the response was not to buckle down and up his game, but to be butt hurt. If anything, Rhule did him a favor. He now has 3 years to play instead of 2.

Exactly. And maybe possibly not playing EJ more. It’s so ridiculous to say that Coleman didn’t get to play because the wide receiver coach/offensive coordinator, etc. were playing favorites then Holgerson comes in and Coleman still doesn’t get to play. Kong just likes to stir up trouble, with “alternate facts”
