Looking almost certain

Several people I trust say it happened. They could be wrong but I doubt that.
Would be interested to know how many coaches get to this point - facilities tour and don’t end up with the job? Once things progress to a tour of the facilities - university/area I think it is pretty much a done deal unless something goes unexpectedly wrong

It’s pretty difficult to keep a visit like this secret.

I read Trev's interview it didn't leave me feeling confident......he sounded and alluded to being cheap.
The "cheap" frugal part was just spin control by Trev for public consumption because he knows that frugal is the sentiment among many in Nebraska. However actions always speak louder than words and firing Frost so early in the season with huge buy out implications tell you all you need to know about Trev willing to spend University money.

And Trev also was pretty generous in giving Mickey a salary bump after Frost was fired.

And yet it has been
I don’t know

Regardless - any relevant in-person interviews/meetings etc take place in “undisclosed” locations and not on campus or in town

If things had progressed to the point of being on campus then there has been an agreement. If it falls through after a tour then something got botched

I'm not certain he, or any potential hires, have been on campus since the search started. I don't think that's how it works.

People have just been unrealistic from the start with all this. An early announcement. Everyone from Urban Meyer to Deion Sanders was a done deal. I understand that's how rumors go, and fans have the luxury to not be realistic - after all we aren't the ones doing the hiring.

But it's always been the plan to announce it after the regular season. Which is now only a little over a week away. And still people are crying about it.

Then, on top of that everyone seemed to think NU could get anyone they wanted by just throwing a bunch of money at them, as if they didn't realize the unique challenges of Nebraska. And also things like cultural fit. Coach Primetime would never live and work in Lincoln, Nebraska.

That being said, it could still be Rhule, I've just always maintained a sense of realism about who might come here.

Exactly a physical tour basically is just a "welcome on board" indication. There's plenty of video of the facilities, the campus and the city that candidates can be taken through while they're considering things. And remember, no coach wants to be let it known they were considering the job and then either turned it down or were rejected in the final decision. A physical tour in Lincoln would certainly "let the cat out of the bag". Too many eyes and too many cellphones to document visits these days.

Uncertain future of the Big 12 conference is reason enough.
Given the new media deal and projections of teams like Houston and Cincinnati potentially joining the Big 12, I wouldn't be sure Klieman would bite on this deal yet. Outside of money, I see no reason why we look at him.

Have you been to Manhattan? Laughing
But if he makes a bowl every year...wins 8 games each year...wouldn't the pressure be less? Same with KU? I just don't see why either coaches would want to leave their current situation. Especially Lance at his age.

Village Inn?

If they were unemployed like Matt Rhule then yes.

Someone like Leipold no.
I get the argument from many that even if it is someone unemployed like Rhule that Trev is holding off on the announcement out of respect for Mickey. That may be true but I am not buying it. It is not disrespectful to Mickey to hire a different coach and to announce it now. How is that disrespecting him? It is the cold hard fact in a cold hard business and if Mickey's feelings are so fragile that it would "hurt him" if it was announced now then he needs to get into a different line of work.

But you know what is disrespectful? Stringing Mickey along and keeping him in the dark even though you knew all along that you were never going to hire him.

If it is Rhule then it should have been announced and Rhule could have already begun the transition. Maybe he already is "behind the scenes" but that would be a damn hard thing to conceal. If he were already contacting potential coaches for his staff and contacting recruits -- both high school and transfer portal guys -- this would have leaked out by now.

I could be full of crap on all of this and I frequently am full of crap. But I do not think it is going to be Rhule. I think it is going to be a sitting head coach. Of course it could also be the case that Trev has been striking out in his offers and has not announced anything because there is nothing to announce. He might actually still be looking for a good coach who actually wants the job.

A cheap hire might have just as high of a probability of success as an expensive one. I’m not advocating for that and I believe Trev wants a proven guy, BUT I don’t believe Tressel was an expensive hire. I just don’t see a guy like that out there in the MAC or Sunbelt.

I think a candidate that doesn’t require a buyout is going to be preferred and obviously easier to attract
And Deion again

Unless trev paid a look-alike to come in and walk around. Keeping disinformation going. Crafty move.

He isn’t stringing Mickey along. Mickey has let some things slip that makes it pretty evident that he knows he isn’t getting the head coaching job. He’s not stupid. Unlike some of our past leaders Mickey is all about NU. Mickey IMO is informed on where the search stands. He knew he had to win more games than he has.

No doubt Mickey knows the head coaching job isn't his. However, it's possible the head coach already has been determined and that the head coach has already decided to keep Mickey on the staff and Mickey knows that too.

The only way a new coach could do any recruiting now is if we fired an existing position coach. Not sure we want to do that with 2 games remaining.
