I really think that the coaches are trying to have him do things that he just isn't comfortable with yet. Things like pooch punt, corner kick, spot punt, etc. I think thats what happened last night. He tried to kick it a mile high and he missed it. I think they just need to tell the young man to boot it every time and if it goes into the end zone, oh well. You can tell he has no confidence right now. I liked that Riley went over and patted him on the back after the negative punt.

The only other negative yardage punts I've seen involved a near whiff in a DII game about 5 years ago and an amazing boomerang punt against a monsoon 50 mph wind gust which landed about 8 yards beyond the LOS and then (predictably) bounced backwards another 15-20 yards. Can't remember the game with the boomerang punt. Not often you see a rare football oddity so enjoy it when it happens.

It happened to us in high school. Man that was a bummer.

I think there are frosh punters who can pooch punt etc. We had kicker in HS back in the day who won a couple games for us just by constantly hitting the coffin corner. It's not like a D1 recruit nowadays has never heard of a pooch punt. He may stabilize, but at the moment he is still making too many errors. And i'm not holding the awful reverse roll against him, that was probably just one of those things.

He is a young kid and will make mistakes. What made me ill to see was him putting his head down and bending down while the ball was still bouncing backwards. Go after the damn thing.

The kicking game (punting ) almost cost us the game. we lost 10 to 30 yards on each punt exchange.

I can only imagine what Bo what have said to the poor kid. He would have been able to tell what flavor bubble gum Bo was chewing he would have gotten in his face so much.

Was he recruited as a punter or kicker? I thought it was kicker but after Foltz he was forced it punting role.

Has a punter ever practiced that play? I can look the other way on this, feeling pretty confident that something like this had never happened to him. Heads up play would be to go after it. But I can't blame him too much for not thinking about doing that.

Slow down there speed racer, Tommy got a bad wheel, can't do it all!!RollingLaugh

Yeah, I fell for that one a while back. Forgot that the backup was named Armstrong too. Ha ha. I thought the dude was an idiot. Turns out I was the idiot.

C'mon man. :)

My reaction at the time as well.

It would be nice if he could just punt.

I'd like to see Armstrong get his shot.
From watching them in warmups, I would say that Armstrong doesn't have near the leg or hang time than CL has. Would he be more consistent? Maybe but I would expect to see more returns with him punting.

I believe we are the worst team in the country in net punting average so we have nothing to lose.

Better question is has a punter ever put his head down and bent over before the whistle was blown? If they would have picked it up and started running for the end zone, he would have had no idea. Go be disgusted with yourself on the sideline after the play is over.

He clearly was not ready for the limelight and thought he was going to redshirt. He probably should have. He'll get better. He's got a big leg and I bet the rest will come with experience.

Very good point...

Don't get it blocked and kick the dang thing down the feel. That's it. Anything else (rugby, hangtime, spin, etc) should not be part of the equation.

I recall even Sam having some real clunkers on punts early in his career. It seems to me that I remember him shanking about every 5th or 6th punt when he started out. I expected to struggle punting the ball this year when Sam went down. No matter who tried to replace Sam, there was going to be a tremendous amount of pressure on him to fill Sam's shoes.

That is exactly what I was going to say Sam had the same problem as a freshman and still had a few bad punts as a sophomore

He's over thinking things for sure. I think that he's thinking about the rush, too, cuz our st coach has a crap blocking scheme.

And that is with the #103 punt return defense. This isn't on Lightborn.

I'm no punter but after timing him and the other punter he definitely is a long strider (takes a long time to kick). I'm confident he'll get better with time.
