Nebraska clearly took on the tougher team and laid the wood to Tennessee. Meanwhile #1 Michigan hid in the Rose Bowl playing a sub par #8 WSU believing that's a show of dominance but had trouble beat WSU , that is till the refs helped them out in the waning seconds. WSU was ranked as high as 19th in the nation during the season while Tennessee never broke out of the Top 9.
- Tennessee entered the bowl game ranked #3 in the nation beating #11 Auburn, #13 Georgia, and #24 Southern Mississippi, their one loss was to #3 Florida.
- WSU was ranked 8th in the nation going into the bowl game and only beat two ranked teams and a loss to one ranked team. They beat #17 Washington, and #23 USC with a loss to #20 ASU.

The Sagarin ratings from 1997 are out there, however, and those are built to provide a projected margin between any two teams.
Nebraska finished the 1997 season No. 1 in those rankings with a rating of 104.99. Michigan finished fourth, behind Florida State and Florida, with a rating of 99.20
Word of warning, this breakdown may hurt the Big 10 of the 90's ego.
Last but not least, read this, hell of a breakdown to settle this argument. Clearly states nebraska was #1 and why. takes all arguments into account. Sorry Michigan but you were #2 in 1997.
