Kirk Hinrich era basketball. Nick Collison retires.

I played against Kirk's Dads coached Sioux City West. We won 1 city title and lost it my Sr. year to Kirk's Dads team.

Best player out of Sioux City ever. He went to KU with Nick and they came oh so close to a NCAA Title.

Two great white boy BBplayers from the Midwest.

I agree Hinrich is the most accomplished player out of Sioux City, one of the all-time best out of Iowa too. Heelan and East have produced some pretty good college players over the last 20 years. What the hell happened to SC West?

SC West is a sh*thole. It's the worst part of Sioux City, which is saying something awful.

I did take the opportunity to see Hinrich play in high school, and the kid made it look easy. Unlike a lot of good white players who ceiling early in their teens, Kirk's skills translated to the NBA. Special talent, and more of an innate talent, like Larry Bird. Unbelievable court awareness and physical tools to get in the right basketball position. Sneaky athlete. Just a pleasure to see manipulate the basketball court.

SCW was a shitthole when Hinrich played there too. The west side has been an arm pit since at least the '50s. What that school needs is a good coach who can find a way to get the west side athletes to lay off the dope, stay in school, and play some hoops. There is some raw talent on that side and Sioux City has become sort of a hotbed for high school basketball.

I wish I had seen Kirk play in person.

I saw Mike Graves play at USD, who was a Heelan standout back in the day, Mike Gesell at my alma mater, and both couldn't hold a candle to Hinrich.

Graves is older than me and we both shrugged heading out of the HS game we saw Kirk play, like, this kid is friggin good. His breakaway to end the game was a two-handed reverse jam, but not showing off, just because he could.

USD recruited quite a few good players out of Sioux City under Dave Boots and Graves was one of the best. Tim Hatchett was the best ever IMO, a phenomenal athlete and scorer. Randy Rosenquist, Dylan Grimsley, and others. Quite a few SSC girls played up at USD as well. USD used to have a pipeline to the Sioux City area.

Youre from sioux city.
A lot makes sense now. ;)

Ha!

After 20+ years out-of-state, I can safely say, we're all a bunch of hicks from the sticks. And that is a good thing. Good peeps back in the Midwest, for the most part. It's a strength the region has for sure, and Nebraska has some of the best people I've ever met.

Tom Davis got let go at Iowa in part because he didn’t keep top level D1 talent instate - Roy Williams got them at Kansas - Hinrich, Collison, also Raef LaFrentz.

Dr. Tom Davis was not dismissed because of Henrich or Collison. Collison would have played for Dr. Tom. Davis was cut lose, because Bob Bowlsby, Iowa's newer AD (Bump Elliott hired Davis) wanted to get a Big Ten championship.

Davis was undefeated in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, but never won a Big Ten title.

Iowa's last Big Ten title was 1979 under Lute Olson. Last Final 4 visit was 1980, also under Olson.

Gee — I wonder if he might have won a big ten title had he been able to land the NBA level talent that was instate?

The loss of LaFrentz was definitely a big blow

Tom Davis also made a Sweet 16 in his final year and got canned for the new hotness of Steve Alford which seemed great at the time but turned out to be meh.

Henrich was committed to Tim Floyd before Floyd left for the Bulls. Collision and Henrichs dad's played together at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City. Bruce Chubick was also on that team
Yes before it became a university.

That BC info is interesting. BC has a solid basketball tradition.

Like there is a good side :p Well, I too grew up around there moving between all 3 states.

What cracks me up is people from some supposedly "wonderful" part of Omaha, who think they are better than someone from Sioux City, when the f**k&ng reality is YOU ARE ALL MIDWESTERN HICKS to the vast majority of people in other parts of the world.

Myself included, and proud of it

Lol

Not sure about Not keeping those guys in Iowa being part of the reason Dr. Tom was shown the gym door but Roy didn’t stop at those 3. I’m pretty sure every McDonalds AA to play high school basket in the state of Iowa has played for Roy Willians either at KU or UNC when you add Marcus Paige and Harrison Barnes to that list.
