So apparently Jim Grobe once again mentioned that he should have taken the Husker coaching job but was told by Osborne that he had to keep some assistants to come. Osborne denies that he was ever offered.

Is Osborne using the liberty of a verbal offer wasn't on paper, so there's nothing official, or is Grobe hearing questions about assistant coaches and assuming the offer was his?

Who is telling the truth here or is it simply a misunderstanding of interest from an offer?

I remember hearing the rumors during the coaching search that he:

Was interviewed.

Was offered.

Osborne wanted some coach or coaches retained.

Who knows?

Jim Grobe brings this up every couple of years. Seems like he has a complex about it. Yes, he was interviewed. TO did think there should be a few "Nebraska" guys on staff who understood the state and culture but it wasn't a deal breaker. Think what you want but Pelini and Gill were both higher on the list. Grobe may have thought he was being pressured on who to hire and decided on his own that it wasn't a good fit. But no he was never offered the job. Guy needs to get over it already.

No AD ever officially offers a job to a coach unless they have first confirmed that the coach will accept the offer. You put out feelers through the coach's agent and find that out.

My assumption in this case is Grobe authorized his agent to say he would accept the job if he could bring his whole staff. Osborne went another direction and Grobe rationalized that by assuming the reason he was rejected was because Osborne did not want him to bring his entire staff. Speculation on Grobe's part and no one really knows the reason Osborne went the other direction - but likely there were multiple reasons and that may or may not have been one of them.

It didn't get that far.

Gill was #1 by far. Couldn't get the right people ($$$) behind it so TO moved on to Pelini, who had overwhelming support.
