I've posted since the spring that the LBer and DE positions were going to be the key.

Both of those positions have proven already to be our Achilles heel. I just have to laugh at all the bitching and moaning about Banker and our defensive performance. WE KNEW we were screwed by what Bo left us at linebacker. WE KNEW that we lacked returning talent at DE. I LOVE Gangwish, but he's not the kind of DE that would have started for our better teams. Now he's hurt and we're back to another walk on with a great mustache. This is going to be a very difficult year for our defense and we really can't afford an injury at linebacker or the wheels might come completely off. You can't play 2 freshmen linebackers as much as we have and expect to have much success. Just the way it is.

Oline was worse - I would argue any injuries there would have the same impact since we are not playing any of the back-ups.

well then we would have to play the Oline backups. One of the recruiting guys and I can't remember which one stated before the season that actually the O line was his biggest thing to watch. Obviously we have some depth issues at multiple positions. O line is something where a line can gel and get better with experience. Lets just hope that it happens quickly. They did some good things at times AND our RBs have to be more explosive when there's a crease. Even Wilbon left a bunch of yards on the field by being tentative at times. Ameer would have housed some runs with the creases I saw at times.

True. I am not as worried about LBer with MRI back and Young being a stud. Depth is a HUGE concern.

I'm on board this train as well. It would seem that OL and DE are going to be bigger issues than LB at least in the near term.

BO is to blame for his lack of recruiting adequately

Isn't selling immediate playing time one of the top recruiting sells? How was Bo and Co. not able to do that?

This is a recurring topic, but it doesn't seem like anchors are ever applied in the conversation. By anchor, I mean the result of limited depth. And by depth, you always want your best players playing, are the "not best" players incapable of being role players? So for depth on the roster, at what point going down the ranking do we hit players who shouldn't even be on the team or any Div1 football team? I could play the what-if game, and say what-if we had Joey Bosa, we'd be rocking' it. But we don't have Joey Bosa, there's no reason to play what-if.

One of my friends from high school was our team's RB, class A, and he was good for our high school, but not really great in the big scheme. He tried walking on, but he was cut from the team. I may have not heard the whole story, but I concluded you had to be pretty good even to walk on. Things may have changed from that time my friend tried to walk on.

So, let's put an anchor on here concerning how many more games are we gonna lose this year because of our depth at LB and/or DE. Now, you can take it to the extreme and say we end up having 65 guys getting hurt all playing LB or DE as we cycle through our whole team roster, but that just shows you don't want to answer the question. Or you can try to misdirect, but that just also shows you don't want to answer the question.

I can give you my answer, and my answer is 0. Here also, I don't expect us to win more than 8 games this year. If you're thinking we're gonna win 10 or 11 games this year, then "yes", having to play role players in multiple positions could/would impact results.

LB play will be very good by midseason. DE will be a concern all year. Getting MRI back is substantial.

The OL is more mental mistakes. There were a lot of blown blocking assignments. DE is more physical, our starting DEs just can't get any pressure on QBs.

We've got at least one double team eating interior DLman and our DEs weren't able to get much pressure at all one on one. That pretty much says it all. BYU has good interior players on both sides of the ball but we need to have guys that can get make plays at DE. Hopefully we find out that BYU was "that good" and not that our DEs are "that average". We'll see.
