Is there something wrong in the locker room, something systemic ?

Can't blame them really. If you have a chance to get a bag take it, teams/coaches have been exploiting players forever.
I will never understand why people are against players getting paid in college and the NFL.

Then most dangerous and physical team sport, the # of years you have left is limited, your an injury away from your career ending or taking a step or two back.

It sucks when players leave but go get the bag while you still can. If I've been at school X for 2 years and have made $250k, school Y offers me $600k, why wouldn't you take that?

So, based on the numbers you used in this example:

1,000 kids enter the portal.
Of those 1,000, 550 never find another team to play for;
Of those remaining 450, only 90 become starter level at the new team;
So for every 1,000 portal entries about 90 are good enough to be starters on their new team;
Can you say 0.09 percent?
Seems low.
Yes, 8-900 out of 1000 are never heard from in any meaningful football way. We as fans who follow the portal may know where a fair amount of the go. We never heard of the 550or most of the 450. We think we know of a lot because 100 players is a lot (maybe between 100 and 200 in a given year). It's relative, 200 is a small percentage of the guys who enter.
Also 90 out of 1000 is 9 percent,
not .09 percent, Maybe you meant it as 9 percent and I read it wrong....?

I would guess a large number of that 55% weren’t getting to play, were walk-ons, and/or didn’t really care if they played. Let’s not forget that a large number of kids in the portal aren’t on scholarship.
This is absolutely correct. Huge number weren't or should not ha e been on scholarship.

Math isn't my strong suit, but Isn't 90 of 1000 actually 9 percent, not .09 percent? Still a low number.

Almost 4k kids in the portal last year. My numbers put it at 360 being starters for their new team. Its likely less and still plummeted when removing guys who were 3 year contributors at previous school.
The portal can get a lot of solid players. But the Adrian Martinez type (developed and contributed multiple years) succeeds far more than Nick Evers (not a multiple year contributer at previous school).

I play horses, okay? It's a sport dominated by decimals and fractions. For example:

23.32/46.24/57.32/109.62 That's what I focus on, in horse racing they're referred to as fractions even though they're decimals.

90/1000= .09 in my world. I know it's 9%.
100/1000= .10 or 10% etc.

I assumed you knew what you meant. I read it differently but figured you knew. Without the word percent it was correct so I read it that way.

The question then is Delaney’s “policy statement” still in place and is there a penalty for failing to follow it?
It is still in place

There is no penalty because anyone who enters the portal can be considered not in good standing with the athletic dept

No issue with being paid. But the current just “up and leave” system is unsustainable and ruining the game. Put em under 2-4 year contracts just like the NFL.

I’m not talking about portal entries. I’m talking about players who you want to process but won’t or don’t want to enter the portal.

Their scholarships will be honored

If they’re no longer playing football, they won’t count toward the 105.

They can’t be on athletic scholarships then. So they do fall under the B1G’s rules. I know there’s a ton of non-athletic academic scholarships available but not all of the kids you want to process are going to qualify for those IF they want to stay at a B1G school. I don’t know that many kids are willing to stick out when they’re told they’ll either only get scout team reps or won’t even suit for practice but I sure as hell wouldn’t voluntarily give up a free major college degree to transfer to Doane so I could play.

why not?

and I think this is essentially college footballs version of a “dead cap” hit

these players, if there are any, would have their scholarships honored by the athletic dept but not count toward the roster limit since they’re not on the team.

Who are the players that you want to process that meet the following criteria?
- have not been here 4 years
- are on scholarship
- need to be processed
- haven't yet entered the portal
There have been suggestions of those kinds of guys in earlier threads. I don’t keep track of the progress of scout team guys and I have no idea who Rhule might want to process. I’m just curious how a B1G team would be able to do it given the rule. You know the situation is possible to arise when you’re talking about bringing in 20 freshmen and 15 transfers.

Seems unlikely but you may be right. Just curiosity on my part.

Going back to having to sit out a year would probably help.
Agree Unless the HC or your position coach moves on or gets fired. They have given the players to much power. You can’t let the prisoners run the prison as an example.

So many quality player that make major contributions that receive plenty of playing time. Something must not be right?
Go Big Red
If you are referring to starters going into the portal there are a number of factors, but without a doubt the biggest one is the NIL system. It is essentially forcing guys to enter the portal to get paid more. If you don't declare, say you want to stay, why would a collective go out of their way to give you a bump in pay? They may throw a little more your way, but no one is going to give more than they think they need to when there are plenty of other players they want to allocate funds to.

This will be happening to some extent everywhere. It sucks for the sport, but the reality is, these kids are just doing what is best for them. The NFL is no guarantee. I just hope a lot of these guys are given, and follow, sound financial advice. Because these deals could really set them up for life.

The system has to change. This would be a disaster in any professional sport and make the draft process almost pointless.

How many players that are not from Nebraska actually grow up a Husker fan?

Congress said that can't happen so definitely not going back to that.
Congress has been more complicit in this mess of crap than the NCAA imo.

The reason all of the old rules failed is because they were illegal under basic American concepts of labor and anti-trust laws. It's amazing it lasted as long as it did. There's no way for Congress to legislate a fix for this situation. Players, schools and conferences will have to agree to a set of rules and until they do its going to be the wild west.

I still fail to see how they are workers that would fall under labor or anti-trust laws. They're representatives of an athletic team under purview of a university, and that's all they are. They never were laborers that would fall under these laws. What's next, high school athletes? Junior high? Peewee league? Where does it stop?

That may not be completely settled, but the NCAA has lost every time any version of that argument has been litigated. How can they not be employees? The schools make huge money, they profit off the athletes' work, the "compensation" (scholarships) is not equitable under the circumstances (billions being made), and the supervisors (coaches) determine exactly how and when the athletes perform their work. You can look at a zebra and say it's a giraffe, but it's still a zebra. I could be wrong, maybe Congress can legislate around this somehow, but it doesn't seem possible to me.

BTW, it's common practice for shady employers to try to avoid employment issues (work comp, withholding, insurance, etc) by saying workers aren't employees and calling them contractors. Courts repeatedly say bullshit, they're employees.

I think it’s beyond obvious that we lack leadership and it shows up most when times get tough

Rhule’s portal acquisition record is piss poor (putting it kindly)
You were implying that the portal entries were the fault of Nebraska leadership. I would say that Nebraska is getting portal entries for similar reasons as everyone else. Kids expecting more money, more playing time or kids being chased off.

Nothing an athlete does falls under the purview of being an employee imo. I conducted research at the University and was given grant funding, even had relatively standard, full time hours, and yet I was never considered an employee of the university. Student-athletes have even less of a case.
