we don't have leaders on defense, they're all frost guys

they followed the offense last year

looked like world beaters when we were running the football.

looked a lot like Friday, especially in the 2nd half of games, when we were pass happy.

I think a bigger problem is our young edge guys. I don't think they're big enough to take on OTs in the run game and they failed in contain multiple times. I'm not sure how they're being coached but it looked like some pretty basic failed responsibilities to me. I also question if we're big enough at linebacker in places. Ty and Nash held up their end of the bargain. They were double teamed almost every play.

second time this year we've had zero urgency at the end of the 1st half and DR bailed us out. it's odd

and Rhule is awful with 2nd half clock management

surprised nobody is talking about his abhorrent challenge
I think you need to have more faith in DR. Like Shedeur Sanders, he doesn’t need much time to get down the field before half or end of game.

if we throw it 30 times it will be very, very disconcerting.

you have to have discipline as a play caller to run the football effectively.

it has everything to do with want-to.
I would love to see a 15 for 18 220ish yards and 2 or 3 TDs from Dylan this week. Run Run Run Run and a few play action deep balls.

But..... it seems like it is really hard for Satt not to use his new shiny toys.

some of it is Raiola audibling. Do we want to take that away from him in order to insure we get the number of run plays we want?

I don't need a condescending lecture on needing to chill or how I just do not understand the "process". And it was Rhule himself who built up expectations preseason by talking about the big goals that this team has. That they were a "good team" that would achieve more than just getting to a bowl game. The hype train started long before the CU game. And I get that it is "his job" to hold press conferences. Again, I don't need a lecture from you on what his job is. But the dude rambles on and on and on. I think he needs to talk a lot less. Just answer the questions without all of the lengthy commentary which amounts to nothing but a load of hot air until he shows us he is a winning coach.

I am not one who expected us to be a playoff team. Go back and check. You will see my preseason prediction was 6-6. And the fact is dingle, though I greatly respect you as one of the long time posters on here, you have a track record of defending our long list of failed coaches right up to the bitter end and accusing those of us who can see the obvious of not seeing the "big picture" like you apparently can. It is you who need to "chill" on your constant pollyanna, silver lining boosterism and your constant need to belittle anyone with two eyes who can see the obvious.

And the obvious is this: we are not a very good football team. And we were outcoached last week and the week before. And in many games last year. And if you take DR out of the equation we are actually in some says, so far anyway, a worse team than we were last year especially on defense. Rhule is going to be loyal to his buddies Satterfield and Foley and both are huge liabilities. So sorry, but it seems to me that Rhule is following the same path as previous failed coaches here. And that is to remain stubbornly loyal to staff who are not getting the job done. We keep leaving points on the field of play. Last year and this year. That is not an accident.
Great post. 👍

It's interesting to see comments such as these. If all that really, truly matters is that Rhule wins, then why does anyone care that he has a lengthy commentary?

I mean we'd be asking someone to change their personality and how they communicate. That ain't ever going to change. Never has with any coach, ever.

You sort of act like if Rhule wasn't so long-winded after a loss, then you wouldn't be so annoyed with him. But I think you would still be as annoyed because you're (rightly so) pissed about the loss. I mean, we saw what little Frost would say, were you less annoyed with him?

I think because Rhule is so good at pumping everybody up, especially fans, we feel totally burned when he let's us down like what happened vs Illinois. It's like he deceived us & we fell for it so we're mad because of it. I get it, but you know, I would much rather have a communicator like Rhule pumping us up (and especially his team because you know they feed off of him) even after a tough/bad loss.

He ain't changing so we better get used to it.

who did you predict the 6 losses to? Did you think we would have any close losses or did you assume they would all be blow outs? Context matters because are you going to rip up the coaches all of the 6 losses that you expected? Are you going to praise them for the games we win that you didn’t think we would?

Dr is here because of Rhule. So he needs to stay in the equation. Some people keep taking him out as if it was magical that he came here so it doesn’t count. He’s here because of Rhule.

Rhule isn’t going to start the season and tell the team he hopes we can go 6-6 - surely he has bigger goals and so should the team. Will they be failures if they said they wanted to reach the playoffs but fall short?

I appreciate the offseason access to the program. I enjoy the behind the scenes of how practice works and the different moving parts of our staff. It does get me excited for the next year but I also find it informative and I enjoy hearing the different backgrounds of our guys who are grinding and trying to get better. Does a close loss to IL change any of that? No.

Rhule does go into a lot of detail at the press conference because he tries to be honest about what they are doing to correct issues and give more insight into his leadership and their process. Would you rather have a Frost with a huge dip giving one word answers or Riley saying we just need to be better or Pelini acting like a child?

We all want to win now and I guarantee no one on this forum wants it more than Rhule, the staff and the players.

It seems everyone on this team is battling injuries. Even our damn kicker
We've come out of 2 straight games of being physically whipped. The UNI game was a surprise, but the real issue was the focus the next week was being physical against ILL, and they still whipped our butts. That has to be a real concern.

Hopefully, we go to Purdue and take care of business, cause this team is getting banged up and needs to be physically and probably mentally freshened up during the bye week.

A well rounded 2-3 TD win at Purdue will do wonders for this team and set them up for a good year. But, an unexpected loss? This team could begin to question everything.

Just heard yesterday that Alvano will be out for weeks.
This reminds me back in 2019 when we had our scholarship kicker with groin injury couldn’t kick because of a groin injury and we ended up losing to Colorado in OVT in Boulder.

Kicking issues since 2019.....damn.

Wow. it seems we just have terrible luck with kickers and injuries. And this is bad news. With as many close games as we are bound to have we will need to make some field goals. Maybe though this is the year where we turn something bad into something good. We might end up going for it on 4th down in scoring territory more often. Remember in the Colorado game where on 4th down DR tried to convince Rhule to go for it? Rhule opted for the field goal which we missed. I bet Rhule starts to rethink his approach here.

We hear it all the time: good on good in practice. Iron hardens Iron. But what if neither side of the ball is iron? What if on both sides of the ball we are playing patty-cake football? In that case our practices are not iron on iron but simply the football version of tribbing.

I hope we go 11-1. But I don't see it. Or even 8-4. Time will tell. Based on our defensive play the last two weeks, injuries to our kicker and offensive line, and the way we were out physicaled in our last two games I do not see any sure wins left on our schedule. Sorry, I just don't. I doubted our offensive line before the season and I still do. I doubted our defense would be good on 3rd down and getting off the field since they were not that good on that last year. And so I thought 6-6. No idea then and no idea now how many would be blowouts. And I did not predict 6-6 as a way of cutting Rhule some slack. This is now his team. And given how easy our schedule is this year a 6-6 season in year two will really suck. And that is on Rhule. And by the way, we will be lucky to make it to 6-6.

Every time we get a new coach the board optimists are always the same. "This is a process!" "Wait until year 3 to make judgments!" "He is still playing with the last dudes players!" And so on and on. And we are hearing the same now. Rhule may very well end up being a great coach for us. I fricking hope he is! I cannot take many more losing seasons! But I am not cutting anyone any slack. The man is making millions and millions of dollars to win football games. And until he starts winning the close games I will continue to doubt him. He has to prove to me that he is a good coach and not just someone who talks a good game.

our backup IMO looks like a legit kicker. I think adrenaline got the better of him on the field goal. i'm not sure he's got a 55+ field goal in him but I think he's a good kicker.

Every single former blackshirt I've listened to who has watched practices has said that 6-7 wins and a bowl game would be a successful season for this group. Most of us bought in to the hype from the media but the fact remains while we're fairly deep on the O line in numbers, most of them are very young. Raiola is still a freshman. Our best edge players on defense are still sophomores and too light in the pants. We have one true freshman edge that got here late who physically might be ready but isn't there mentally yet.

That said, the thing that gives me concern is what happened to our defense Friday night. I'm not really anymore worried about the kickers than I am any other season. They're ALWAYs one kick away from needing counseling. It's a weird job where you stand around for 95% of the plays then are expected to run on the field and perfectly execute a fairly technical physical act. Takes a special mindset The defense on the other hand plays half the game and NOBODY was worried about them. They stunk Friday night. They more than anything else didn't get it done. White needs to figure it out quickly.

All of us IMO are in a wait and see mode or at least we should be. Nobody is critical of that view. I'm all in on Rhule though. I think he's the best guy we've had since Tom but there's no guarantees.....EVER..

Last year NU got pummeled by Michigan, immediately had a practice the next day, went on the road and beat Illinois, had a bye week to then beat NW and Purdue, then promptly lost 4 straight games, 3 by 3 points and 1 by 7 points.

Last year, by the time we got done with MIchigan that represented the last team that was just flat out better than us. The same does not hold true this year.
Rutgers, Ind, OSU, USC and the other games are a much tougher stretch to get through this year.

We best get our shit together.

I hope that is true, but the old adage in sports is always: What have you done for me lately?

The 6-7 wins I was hearing from some of Tom's and Frank's former players is looking more likely. This loss to Illinois was a kick in the nuts. Very disappointing and our defensive guru needs to figure out how to stop an off tackle run. Where have we seen this before?

case in point, Tony White and our defense. 5.8 yards per carry for their running back. Now do people understand why I was so concerned about our run defense after the UNI game?

My wife, who is fairly astute for a woman, and as a Husker fan, sees things that never occur to me. She says it looks like TW was far less animated than normal calling the defense Friday night.

She understands that we've changed our overall scheme this year and wonders if, in reality, TW is not bought into the way our secondary is playing? Is it possible Butler convinced Rhule of a different way to approach the overall defense and Rhule has bought into it, but TW hasn't?

She just said he seemed so much more subdued when he has previously been fired up.
