if your researching "cutting the cord"....

Cut the cord if it makes you feel better. Like Jeten mentioned most cord cutters I know blow far more than I do on my dish bill every month. Such as my smoker brother in law who also drinks. And my sister and brother in law.

Lastly I dont think I know any cord cutter who gets by without mooching passwords for ESPN, HBO Go etc apps off of paying family or friends and never paying them anything.

For those that truly dont need it? Great. Just stay off your damn soap box. I think thats what annoys people more than anything.
It's the heroin that put my budget in the red. But we all have our habits, amirite?

It's going to be a great day when ALLO comes to my neighborhood. I'll be able to completely cut ties with Time Warner. I share passwords, but I also paid Netflix an extra 5 bucks per month to go on their "friends and family" plan which allows up to 5 devices to be running Netflix at once. I think they know people are sharing or why would they call it a "Friends and Family Plan"? My brother gave me his DirecTV password which he never uses. Do I feel bad about it? Nope. If Time Warner allowed me to pick the few channels I watch and only pay for them I'd have no problems with their service, but they have paid lobbyists to keep congress from even addressing ala carte service forever. The most expensive channel in everyone's cable bill is ESPN which I read that nearly half the country never watches at all but is paying for it. Estimated to be about $9 per month...that's $100+ per year that my mother pays to Cox Cable for a channel she never watches...ever.

I will say the best cable company, by far, I ever had was U-Verse. If they were around, I'd consider it.

I have not cut the cord, but I'm glad other people are doing so. Otherwise, what market forces exist that would keep cable/satellite rates from going through the roof?

Frankly if I could buy the small-town cable package that some of the my family members have, with plenty of HD channels right out of the wall and no boxes required, I would be quite content to stay with cable. But I am stuck with Comcast, who insists that it must scramble its signals to prevent cable theft, so I can't get anything - not even basic SD channels - without using their stupid boxes. Based on this thread and thousands of others like it, I would say their "preventing cable theft" argument went out the window years ago.

I don't even mind paying for some channels I never watch, and I appreciate the viewing options that we have today. But eventually cable prices reach a point at which I just don't want to sit on my ass and watch enough TV to justify the monthly bill.
