I want to see who MJ wants as OC

we make every opposing qb look like peyton manning. man on man dbs and blitz on every down. if our inept defensive caoach cant figure it out he should just google football blitz packages. we look like the dumbest pass defense in the entire history of college football and do it over and over.

Purdy was trying to play with an injury and supposedly the reason Smothers didn’t come back for the second half was he was injured. People need to cool their jets on bashing some of our players. We don’t know everything going on behind the scenes.
I’ll add that we did come out and try to use the QB run game with Smothers and Purdy. I think Smothers and Purdy could be effective with a more QB RPO based offense than Whip likes to run.
I don't think the QB run game is going to solve anything, and it will get a QB hurt. We do have a stable of running backs and supposedly our line can run block. I'm not talking about RPO bullsh1t.. I'm talking power run game. Then you can do some playaction off that, but it's the only way to slow things down for the defense and try to get some games under control.

Whips scheme doesn’t mesh well with our fan base. It works. He’s not bad. But Nebraska doesn’t want to be pass happy. And now the CT is out, whips scheme is dead in the water
I think we have to figure out if we want to be a national brand or we want to win the Big 10 west. Sounds like some want to be like Wisconsin or Illinois who have never competed for a national championship but are solid in our conference. I don’t see anyone from the Big 10 west that would be able to compete in a playoff setting at this time.

This next week we will see what kind of gameplan is put together. This is a good test of MJ's leadership. He has to be able to give direction to his OC and have that guy come up with a viable plan.

I think Whip is a bit inflexible.. but he better pull something out of his hat to get the offense working for the rest of the season.
The Minnesota game is a freebie. With the loss of CT, even Vegas is saying NU is going down and by a bigger margin by the day. And they likely are.
All things equal, if NU does what they typically do, just count on the L.

So, instead of throwing up the frickin white flag, like NU did last week, how about they try everything to win the game?

The excuses for a loss are already in place...starting QB out, #2 and # 3 injured. NU can't run the ball, can't throw the ball, can't stop the run, can't get the ball to Palmer, can't pressure the QB, can't protect the QB.

27 yards in the 2nd half last week doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

It's a nightmare/dream game to coach. By most accounts, there's nothing to lose. Hell, maybe even the crowd gets involved and stays involved.

I'd start Masker at QB. Just don't announce it. Been there 5 years. Threw for 7K yards in high school. I know, big deal. At one time, he was running some type of offense. Presumably, he's a smart kid. He should know the offense or what's he on the roster for? Minnesota has zero film on what the kid can or can't do. He likely throws the ball better than either Purdy or Smothers.

Put a 15-20 play package together of his most effective plays and give it a go. I can't imagine he can't run the offense.

Same thing with Haarberg. Been there 2 years, never been on the field.
Put a different 15-20 play package of his most consistent plays and do it.
Slow the game down.

Mix in a few Wildcats with Grant and get the crowd involved. So, NU gets their brains beat out. Happened against OU, and Illinois. It's gonna happen again this year another time or two. Don't just send up the white flag.

We watched a beaten-up and beaten-down QB operate in the NU system for a lot of Martinez's career. It never led NU to win ballgames.

Purdy was injured and was a disaster Saturday. Smothers was a non-productive player Saturday, but we all know what he brings to the table, if he's injured, he brings even less.

Have Minnesota practice all week on QBs that may both still be injured and unable to perform. Come out with different QBs and try to make Minnesota adjust on the fly.

Blitz the piss out of Morgan, and hope to somewhat contain their nice RB.

Maybe the defense makes Minnesota work for their points.

These are the kind of crazy games where an upset can occur. We're not playing Michigan or Ohio State, who can just overpower you in every aspect of the game. NU is playing a team that's thrown a dud or two this year.

Return any punt that's returnable, maybe somebody breaks something. Maybe NU blocks another punt. We never break a punt that we fair catch. That's a weekly surrender in the kicking game.

Yes, this is totally non-conventional. But, if you're at the game, or watching at home, do you just want to sit there and take your beating by doing the same thing that has led to those beating?

A good coach uses every weapon at their disposal.

When you have a better team it's easier to beat that conventional, mostly predictable opponent. Taking on an unconventional opponent when you don't know exactly what the hell they are going to do is a lot harder if they get some momentum.

If you get beat 21-6 or 42-3, what makes a difference? NU would still be 3-6. (Giving or taking points notwithstanding).

Instead of this NU squad looking forward to this game with dread, mix it up a little, or a lot, and give PJ something to talk about. Get that crowd buzzing about what might happen next.

This is the kind of post that can and probably will get mocked and thrown back in my face. It's a Monday, and this board has been slower than molasses most of the day. It's totally understandable after last week.

If it weren't for the discussion of who the next HC might be, there wouldn't be much reason to even take the time to post something that might draw some reactions from the room. This post may draw some reactions, chuckles, shaking of heads, or maybe some belly laughs. Some will just say wtf?

Love it! Agree 100%

If Mickey fails to do this much, he can kiss the opportunity away. We'll still be super happy with him as wr coach.

Great interview with MJ that just came out, (and free to watch on this site, Thanks IN!)

Sounds like we are going to see more run game, and MJ talked about the league being more run heavy and controlling the clock, and basically said we have to work on getting there.

It wasn't a direct statement about the offensive direction, but an indirect one, that I think is important. He's validating the necessity to be able to run the ball in this league and also gave some insights to Purdy and how they are coaching him.

It's impressive to see his people skills to be honest. I come away from his interviews feeling like he is the right head coach for the players. Sounds like Chubba tries to do too much and being a young guy is needing to be settled down so he can operate more efficiently.

I think someone asked him about Haarberg/Masker and he said oh no, those guys will be good qb's someday, but not right now.. they have to stick with Logan and Chubba. So he kind of tells you those are his best options going forward.

It's also good to see the coach joke around with the media a little bit. I hope we can get some more wins, cause I believe in how MJ is running things and want to see him get more time to get the talent and coaching staff he desires.

Masker is 23 years old and has been there going on 5 years. I look forward to the day he becomes a good QB. LOL

Meyer is a proven elite winner as a head coach in college. He has, I believe, a degree in Psychology. I've watched videos of his former players and he is 100% the opposite of Mickey. He takes care of the studs who help him win regardless of their decorum. If they don't produce or Urban thinks they are prolonging an injury, he considers them non-contributors of the team, in fact, treats them like shit. His approach works well for him.

Mickey seems to actually care about these kids. As a Head Coach, that may or may not translate into wins. If you have a coach that will coach you hard, finds a way to respect the player, yet, tells the kid the truth as the coach sees it, may translate into something pretty powerful.

Today, I read a "dated" article, from 2013 about the 11 in-season "interim head coach hires" from 1992 thru 2011. Most were failures. They were mostly DC that were promoted in season. Then there were a couple of OC that was promoted in the season. In almost every case they failed.

Dabo from Clemson was the exception, as we all know. Most interim coaches were not retained, and the new hires of Bill O'Brien (14-8) had PSU, Tuberville at Auburn (won 85 games in 10 years), and Jerry Kill from Minnesota went 8-2.

All the other hires of a new head coach the following year were large failures.

After the 2013 date, there would be other examples like Ortegon at USC, etc, but the article only touched on them and didn't make an assessment.

Overall, it seems hit-and-miss. Mostly miss.

Casey says he holds everyone accountable.

Yeah it's hit or miss, but here is how I look at it. Instead of asking what is best for Wins vs Losses or what is best for the fans, or these sort of things (they are important) but what is best for the players? I start there, and I think he would be good for the players, and like you said, who knows how that translates, but I'm okay giving the guy a few years to see how it goes.
