I hate losing kaelin...

I was mildly surprised to see him leave as I would imagine he knew of HH's desire to play another position.

I wish him all the best.

The timing of everything really threw him off last year. Kaelin commits in May. Dylon commits on Dec. 18. Signing day is Dec. 20. I always felt that Kaelin made a pragmatic decision to go ahead and sign. It was late in the process. Assuming that he's had a good year of development, he's now in a better position to find the right school. Take some visits, make some new relationships. The market will be flooded with transfers and Kaelin has no starting experience so it's anyone's guess where he winds up. I'm hoping that he returns to NU and we take him back. But if that doesn't happen, I'd like to see him go to a Wyoming and maybe start for three years or so.

I hate to lose him too but only for reasons of depth this year. DR is our QB for at least the next two years, barring injury, and that is plenty of time to bring in some new QB's to add depth. We have Lateef coming next year with HH in the wings in a pinch. And we can add a QB from the portal who is at least serviceable as we recruit another high school QB. If DR goes down with an injury we were going to be in a bit of trouble even with Kaelin. Furthermore, we have no idea how good he would really have been. My gut says he was going to be good, but no way to know.

It was never going to work. 2 qbs in one class is a thing of the past. Heck I would bet lateef is 60/40 “no” on finishing his career at NU unless there are portal changes.

It could but one would need to be a 2 or low 3 star developmental depth guy.

You can't repeatedly say publicly that you think a guy "has an NFL arm" and then expect him to ride the bench for 3 seasons.
There’s dozens if not hundreds of kids in college with NFL arms. Very few are NFL QBs. He has to put it on video if wants a shot at the next level and he’s not enjoying standing on the sideline.

He sucks and knows he sucks. That’s why he left, he knows he’d never play here. So, fine by me, more reps for TJ

I also expect an experienced portal QB too, just in case. We didn’t need one but now we will likely take one.

I don’t believe he was playing with many if any first teamers in the spring scrimmage but he was #3 for a reason.

Said it before and I will say it again; if the kid wasn't from Nebraska, no one would give a damn. This will piss off people but i don't care...

I, for one, am happy about the reduction to 105. So much wasted resources on the 5' 10" 165lb kids from the middle of nowhere Nebraska. What bothers me more are the wasted scholarships to locals because everyone loves the feel good story about the home grown kid. A year or two later they blend into the background never to be seen again.

There are a couple in this year's recruiting class. Rhule needs to change his mentality when it comes to recruiting.

Whats he going to say? “The kid struggled his senior year in high school, hes dog shit”. This is absolutely Kaelin being pushed out to make room, same with Heinrich.

Kinda what some said about Pelini not recruiting Harrison Phillips earlier.

I'm guessing there will be a decent chunk of guys from specifically last year's recruiting class that are basically given this winter + spring to show if they deserve a spot, then shown the door if not.

You cold hearted bastard I totally agree with you.

I get it - I really do but the Woodhead and Phillips examples 2 out of 1,000.
The state of Nebraska has really produced crap the last 20 years. Some have gone to other schools and got drafted like Fant but every instate player from Nebraska that has played at Nebraska has been pretty much a disappointment. The days of Eric Crouch and Ahman Green seem like 50 years ago. I could honestly give a crap if we ever signed someone from Nebraska because they never produce at the college level.

I don't usually take exception to opinion posts, but I will here. Danny is exceptional young man, football player and human being, whose work ethic is unlike his generation.
Danny might look for a better opportunity, but he does not suck. If you had seen him give a eulogy at his mentor's funeral, you'd think differently. Inspired by said mentor, his ceiling at QB is undetermined to say the least. Wish him well instead. Danny is a kid who will do big things, be it in the NFL or The Stephen Center. He will make a positive difference.

I don’t know him on that level but would hope he lands at a P4 and is patient with for his opportunity. He came in and couldn’t get ahead of the #1 QB in the nation. Not beating DR does not mean DK sucks. Anxious to see how it plays out. If he jumps for immediate playing time likely it won’t be P4 - hopefully he finds a home that he can take the reins in a year or two.

this is exactly right

and also exactly why signing day recruiting rankings are fool's gold

If you have a home state legacy recruit who is a 3 star 5.6 who has at least one offer from a P4 school you offer him and develop him.

You mean that is why 8 of our last 9 recruiting classes have ranked in the top 25 nationally per Rivals, and we've not had a single winning season, let alone sniff the top 25, despite all these touted recruiting classes. 🤨

we did crack the top 25 twice over that timeframe to be fair, albeit briefly

but, yea

North Dakota State, with Randy Hedberg as QB coach, produces a hell of a lot more NFL guys than the schools in the G5 conferences
did you see the former NDSU coach who went to USC to coach their LBs just accepted the head job at Fresno State?

interesting

It's also of note that little brother is killing it at Buford as a Junior. May lead the team to the state championship in the largest class.

I have thoughts as this one does hurt... Wouldn't this be the WORST time to enter the portal in recent memory? with all these teams trying to get to 105 I would have to think that players would be swimming amongst way too many other options and their stock is diluted... if I'm DK, I'd hold out this cycle... Work with Dana and Glenn, gain the immense experience that brings, get to be a backup and when the time is right to shine, light it up even as a backup... then, after next season, enter the portal with the experience and some film and go get paid with 3 years to play... I dunno... with HH moving to a different position this idea just seems short sighted

I think the prospect of Lateef's legs play a lot into the QB situation. No doubt, DR not much of a runner and not instinctive either. I think if DR would take off about 10-15 pounds he would be a much better QB.

I really don't watch any NFL, so are there QB's in that league that actually play that come off as chubby guys?
I know their ability to run the ball in college varied quite a bit.

Seems like Sonny Jurgenson days have been over for a long time. Maybe not. Am I wrong?
As I said, I don't watch any pro ball.
