I don’t recognize college football anymore.

I can understand why longtime fans don't like NIL, the transfer portal, etc. Can't say I'm crazy about them either.

What's hilarious is when coaches and athletic directors complain about all of this. I always wish I was in the room to ask, "Can't we go back to the college game we all knew and loved way back in the day? You know, when top coaches made $50-$60,000 per year and the AD job was a side gig for one of the school's head coaches, so he could make an extra $15K and afford to send his kid to college."

Me neither

We haven’t been to a bowl game in going on a decade & countless mouth breathers think illinois is a shining beacon of hope
Decade is 10 year period and will be 6 years since the Music City bowl against Tennessee at the end of the month..

Good for whom?

Product has never been better, never been more popular

Obviously there’s more money going directly into the hands of those who produce as opposed to those who “manage” & “administrate”
Is it better?

Games play the same. The angst comes from jealousy. Embrace and enjoy the new ride! Change is inevitable.

To be clear, I think NIL helps Nebraska.

However, I am worried about the effects this will have on the overall playing field and integrity of the game.

Could they do team NIL caps at some point?

Is it better?
The level of play is unquestionably better

The players - on the whole - are unquestionably better

It’s infinitely safer

Only those blinded by nostalgia (& perhaps a dusting of cataracts) would disagree

Not sure how this will be sustainable. At least, without cutting the athletic programs that are not profitable.

What is the purpose of the NCAA now, anyway? Now that college athletics is no longer amateur, it seems like the schools should dissolve the NCAA and just treat College Football like the professional league it is now.

If there is going to be any semblance of competitive balance, there needs to be some kind of salary caps and contracts, things that every other professional league has.

Ohio State loses bidding war for recruit:

https://www.si.com/fannation/colleg...-nil-ohio-state-georgia-5-star-recruit-report

From article:

“The unnamed player got an offer in the neighborhood of $800,000 per season to play at Georgia, a figure that doesn't even include a reported signing bonus of $1.8 million more on top of that.”
For perspective, this is like neurosurgeon compensation for a high schooler who may not do anything of note at the next level.

I agree. The NCAA has become a joke.

At some point you are going to see lawyers get involved when there is disparity between the money male and female recruits are getting. Just wait.

Has become?

The NCAA have been a joke since the BCS wrestled football away from it 20+ years ago

Its sole purpose is to run the college hoops tourney and maximize profits (gasp)

Cats out of the bag. Not sure they can go backwards now. Now with the playoff expansion and the opportunity even greater to cash in during bowl season, I don’t expect it to pull back at all. Let’s say you are Alabama or UGA, who is almost guaranteed to to either make or be on the verge of making the playoff every season. Would you deem 15 mil in NIL spend worth it? I would. The playoff expansion, added ad revenue, gambling on brackets, etc…. College football is about to reach the highest highs and I’m here for it. NIL is just an ingredient in the soup.

The networks that have the media rights to each conference should really be contributing to the NIL funds of its conference affiliated teams

Those who hold media rights to the BIG have a stake in those teams success

Right now NIL is funded by boosters and local businesses with high wealth and value athletics - compared to other states and locations I think nebraksa pales in comparison to the wealth of alumni and business affiliated with Michigan and Ohio State (it isn’t close) -

Meh....it's no better than any other decade. Just more access to terrible games that only have betting ramifications.

I'm not yelling at clouds or losing sleep over a few 18 year olds getting paid. Some dudes are making a killing, and good on them.

It's not going to improve the game. The same 5-7 teams well get all the top talent and win the majority of championships. This thread is about 2 play-off teams in a bidding war for an 18 year old kid.

Basically the same as it's ever been, just all "legal".

Is it really a tournament for a championship if it is just the same teams buying their way there?

You can’t deny NIL/transfer portal has made college football a year-round sport, adding tons of interest and intrigue

I fully agree with your last sentence. CFB, as in life, has always been about haves and have nots

If you put todays player next to a player from any other decade it would be a very funny picture

Competitive balance is irrelevant. Dynasties are good for sports and never going away. Every league, at every level have powerhouses and always will. NIL isn’t going to change that. 64 teams in an NCAA tournament and the usual suspects win championships almost every year.

That 1 win every few years over bama is enough to keep fans coming back. They won’t cancel the playoffs if the Yankees win the next three WS rings. Viewership will do nothing but increase.

I mean, I think it could become a Title IX issue.

How many female athletes are going to get $800,000 per year with a 1.8 million dollar signing bonus?

That's great that players today are bigger, faster, stronger. That doesn't improve the product. Bad football is bad football, regardless of how big and fast the players are.

universities in small ag states with limited associated business and booster wealth would do better by ditching NIL spending in football and pour it all into 5-7 basketball players

Popular is not always good. Just popular. We'll see how all the $ affects team dynamics, commitment to sacrifice to win games, etc...
