i’m not going to beat a dead horse

Even if we would have won another 2 games finishing 19-12 not knowing how we would have played in the conference tournament, I truly believe this team would have lost in the 1st round.
Losing in the first round, I believe, cost both Indiana and Ohio State from making the tournament. I think it would have cost us, too.

I hope I straighten my attitude out a little and enjoy The Big Dance this year. Right now I'm just bummed & pi$$ed the Husker men's team is not there... again.

of conference or dance? i’d live with getting to the dance… at one point we were a projected 10 seed….
I recall seeing NU projected as high as a 7 seed after the win at NW. That assumed NU would win 2-3 more regular season games and not completely crater their season.

But yeah - I couldn’t bring myself to watch any basketball over the weekend. It just pissed me off. I’m going to have a hard time watching any of the NCAA Tournament.

but after the release of the bracket, i’m angry again about our stumbling finish…
Me too. I'm just angry we didn't make the conf tourney. That's pathetic. Fred should have resigned that night. Imagine still being willing to show your face in public and feed us this line of absolute horsecrap:

"We’re going to put a team on the court that’s going to fit the values of Huskers. I think this team was. It was a hard-working team; we just did not close out games the way we needed to. We’re going to do everything in our power to get this thing right and to get a consistent winner on the court.”

The "values" of the Nebraska basketball program is losing. A lot.

Meh. I normally don’t watch much of the tourney anyway. Just don’t get much enjoyment out of it. A friend of mine who played pro overseas for over a decade says he can’t watch it. Between the traveling and wrestling matches he can’t stand it.

Fred’s good at stringing together meaningless platitudes that sound great as long as nobody has to be accountable for anything. Maybe he picked it up from our fans.

March madness is one of the greatest sporting events. Your brother in law or what ever made up friend it is this time either has an ax to grind or is made up. I am pretty sure which one it is.

Yeah f u. It’s a buddy who coached big men at Stockton’s summer camps at Gonzaga. He’s from Hartington and played at Yankton College in the early 70s.

I’m an NU fan. I’ll probably watch some of UNO’s games and root for them but NU’s absence from the tournament over the years has been a curb on my enthusiasm for it. I LOVED to play the game. Just not all that fond of watching it. Football is a different story. I’ve filled out one bracket in my lifetime and was coerced in to doing that.

Was your buddy a "Becker"?

It’s complete bullshit. We’re gonna be even worse next year. Mark it down 😞

Impossible to know what most teams will look like next year. The transfer portal has changed everything.

Look at St John's, coaching aside, the biggest difference is their roster from last year to this year. Probably not the norm but I don't think they have but 4 players that were on the roster last year still on the team, and those that were are either sophomores Pitino recruited or guys he brought in from the transfer portal his first year. The only players that started their careers at St. John's are the freshmen and 1 or 2 sophs. He has already stated he won't be recruiting the high school kids anymore. They don't have a huge NIL budget, unless Pitino is funding it himself, they don't have football money to subsidize the basketball programs. He just finds players that fit his style of play that were unhappy with their situation at other schools.

I'll always be open-minded, so I'm hoping this season serves as an example that the Morgans and Worsters and Meahs are decent supporting pieces - but NOT good enough to get you to the B1G tourney. That's a low, low bar and we failed to get there. Some of the wins this team had masked the fact that at the end of the day we just weren't very good. NIL and transfer recruiting better step up big time. There's no Williams waiting in the wings to rescue Fred next year.

If it turns out the team actually is worse next year? No way Fred survives that. The one thing the Nebraska has that is often discussed nationally is our crowd/arena/atmosphere/ support. If we're sub .500 and the barn is empty its time to cut bait.

We had a better team last year and ended up getting boat raced by A&M in the tourney. I’m disappointed this years team imploded, but when I consider the roster of this team, I’m not shocked. It wasn’t good. We had no point guard and Morgan is not good enough of a big man to make a difference. Let’s face it. This was not a tourney caliber team. I’m disappointed in Fred. But the more I read and think about it, the more I wonder if he’s strapped on what he has to work with in terms of NIL. Is the admin supporting what he needs? Maybe it’s not all Fred’s fault.

Tell me what part of this year’s portal additions gives you any confidence we’ll be better next year? And we at least had some program momentum last year and the portal class was still a huge embarrassing failure.

Edit: Also we had 2 foundational pieces last year. One of them being the best 2 guard in the conference and the conference’s leading scorer. Fred couldn’t bring in the necessary pieces to compliment Williams and Gary. What makes you think he can bring in an entirely new starting lineup? Probably need a better 6 man too. Fred needed to bring in 4 quality players last year and went 0-4. But you think he can bring in 5-7 new players for next year? Why?

Well, since the portal isn't open yet, that would be impossible to to respond to.

As I edited in my prior response. Fred needed to bring 4ish new players to compliment our 2 foundational pieces. (Williams and Gary) Fred went a big fat 0-4 in the portal last year, but you think he can bring in 5-7 new players this year and field a NCAA caliber team? Why?

Maybe he won't get the necessary players, that doesn't mean that it is not possible. The world of college sports are changing rapidly, if Nebraska chooses not to compete in that environment, then they will continue to lose. I am not totally convinced it is Hoiberg that is the whole problem though.

If Fred isn’t getting the necessary support (NIL) from donors why isn’t he shouting from the roof tops right now? Rhule made it clear he needed more NIL support. Fred has to know he’s one more bad season away from being fired, if he’s not getting the support he needs, why isn’t he saying that publicly? I would if I knew that it was true and I was standing on my last leg. Makes no sense…

I will be 71 in August. I have enjoyed watching many games this season and every year. Let us not forget that Nebraska BB is not striving to get back to winning Nattys like football is. The Fred Hoiberg and Danny Nee administrations are and were the ceiling Nebraska basketball I have known as witness has at its peak.

It also makes no sense for the administration to extend Fred last year, making him the 15th highest paid coach in the country if he wasn't getting all the support he needed to be successful.

There is only so much money to go around. How much are you contributing to the basketball program? I would imagine the same as me, nothing because if I want any of the athletic programs to be good, it is football, so that is where my contribution goes.

Don’t change the subject. You eluded to Fred not getting the necessary support. I asked why would Fred not advocate for himself, for what he needs to succeed? You didn’t answer the question.

If your boss isn’t giving you what you need to do the job he’s hired you to do, you go to him at let him know, privately. If he isn’t willing to work with you and your job is on the line you make your grievances public, get people on your side and put the pressure on your employer. Fred isn’t doing any of that. Why?

Since I am not him, you would have to ask Fred Hoiberg why he isn't pressuring his employer. From everything I have read, there were multiple transfers that were initially interested in Nebraska that signed elsewhere for more money.

If you want me to speculate, I would write, what I already wrote, that boosters and corporations aren't putting a priority on basketball NIL dollars. Just as I am donating money to football and not basketball. So again I ask, where is your money going?

Edit - For the record that isn't changing the subject. My post answered your question. You asked why isn't Hoiberg screaming from the rooftops etc. I wrote, that perhaps the money boosters aren't donating to basketball and are more concerned with getting football in a place to compete nationally.

Fred has been in multiple TV and radio spots asking for and thanking people for NIL donations to NIL. I don't think he's the type to bluntly say in a post game interview though that we have to fund NIL better so we can get better players than the guys I'm having to play now but that's the bottom line IMO.

The amount of money football is bleeding out of our donors right now is astounding. You can only get so much milk out of the cash cow.
