I cannot believe the backlash that I am seeing from some of the fans out there today. It is completely ridiculous to expect a new head coach to come in a save the team right away. Riley is still learning the teams strengths and weaknesses.

Yes, I was expecting a win today, but it's not the end of the world that we didn't. How many people out there expected a National Championship this season? Not many. In terms of the division and conference title, we are still right there. This game was almost an exhibition game in that sense.

I thought the staff did a great job of making halftime adjustments. In the second quarter we couldn't move the ball, but after the first possession of the 3rd quarter, the team played very well.

It also didn't help that Mike Rose wasn't out there patrolling the defense.

I am still expecting this team to finish 9-3 this season. I would expect wins against South Alabama, Miami, Southern Mississippi, Illinois, Northwestern, Iowa and Purdue. That is 7 wins right there. And as I expected before the season, a split between Michigan State and Wisconsin. Then also, probably a win at Rutgers.

That's just ridiculous. I hope Riley does well but after watching the game today, I saw a team with a 7-5, maybe 6-6, record written all over it.

Wish you could read Ohio states message boards last year after their opening loss to VT

Bet they had similar posts
Sorry, the Huskers don't have nearly enough talent on the roster to run the table. A new coach wasn't going to change that overnight, no matter who NU hired.

9-3 is certainly possible, but then so is 6-6. Northwestern and Minnesota looked pretty good this weekend. Drew Ott will give our o-line fits against Iowa. Even Rutgers and Illinois will not be pushovers.

Odds are they won't. But 7-5 or 6-6 is laughable
Really?? You gotta be honest with yourself, we looked really bad today... O-Line was terrible, we could not run the ball, pass defense was ugly... I don't know man, BYU is not a great team. With 7-5 "laughable".... i have a hard time finding 7 wins on our schedule. I know it's just one game, but damn, we have a lot of work to do to get to 7 wins.

I'm giving the players and coaches some time to let this one burn. Fluke loss. But it shouldn't have been that close. Lots of old mistakes. Some stupid penalties. Some non calls by refs. That fumble really hurt. Snapping was high all day. These things are fixable.

Now the big question is. Will they be fixed and what will be consequences if they dont. Hopefully best players see the field.

if armstrong can have a bit more field vision, and know when to take off running, it could open things up.
his passing seemed to improve, all though when he throws out to the rb, Im scare someone gonna pick it for 6 sometime in the future.
the last play seemed like payback for northwestern, and how close it was to the plain of the end zone reminded me of penn state. It's hard to say what our record will be cause who knows how they will develop. they got tools to work with it's just how well will they put it together going forward?

This is BYU. We lost to BYU. Let me repeat that.......BYU. We will be lucky to make a bowl game.

BYU is a good to potentially great team. They were looking pretty good last year until Taysom went down. They have a veteran and very good O-line, three wide receivers that are not only 6'5" but are actually have good hands, strength and speed. Taysom makes everyone look like they suck especially considering he is extremely experienced in the college game. Their back up this year is legit too, as the analyst seemed to be gushing over him quite a bit (is an elite 11 qb). Their defensive line is pretty good. Obviously weaker in the back end.

Just so you know last year with taysom

@Uconn W 35-10
@ Texas W 41-7 (don't think we could ever do that to Texas)
Houston W 33-25
Virginia W 41-33

Not for sure what we would have done in that schedule but considering our track record with Texas we would have at least lost that one. So, bare in mind this was not South Dakota State or McNeese State. Not for sure how they will fare the rest of the year without taysom and their NT bang up, but they were primed for a good season and today may have been the best they will be all season, unfortunately for them.

We do not have the depth right now. We are going to have to be patient. This will be an up and down year especially if we start to get a bunch more injuries. We may have to pull some redshirts we don't want to and we are already playing many young kids. We will not win 9 games this year.I see 6-7 and that will be a struggle.
Nothing against the coaches they need time to restock the depth chart. The biggest problem I see is we play 11 straight weeks without a bye and our depth is not good in alot of positions. We need to stay healthy or that could be the downfall of the season.

"Save the team" WHAT- we were 9-4 and went to bowl games every year pelini was here.

We supposedly didn't bring Mike Riley and to save the program we brought him in to win championships and we saw yesterday was a complete dismantling of what was left and horrific coaching on top of that. Read the papers and face the truth, clearly you missed the game.

This Riley move leaves program in ruin for probably 2-4 years.

After yesterday we can go big or go home but after yesterday only I see:

S. Alabama - W
Miami - L
Illinois -W
Wisconsin -L
Minnesota - L
Northwestern - W
Purdue _ W
Michigan ST - L
Rutgers- W
Iowa - W

You had a rough night. And apparently...you are still drunk. I say jump...you are taking this pretty hard after 1 game.

I agree 99%. There were many positives that came of this loss. 1 fluke hail mary won that game. People we need to remember we are not the 90s team. If we were then yes this would be a horrible loss. We aren't, we are an average unranked team just the same as BYU. We both had the same talent level. With their QB being better than ours. We had 2 stud D starters out, we had a new coach, new schemes, new young players trying to learn the system. So why is this loss so unreal in the realm of possibilities?

That being said I also think we need to be realistic on our expectations for the year. I think South bama and Souther miss should be automatic wins. Winning against Miami in Miami is just wishful thinking. Guessing we will come out as a 7-10 pt underdog on that one. Miami has a solid team much better than BYU and it is a home game. Even if everything was the same as last year this would be a very tough win to get. From this point on no win should be considered a gimmie. Illinois should be a win. Before yesterday I would have given us the win against Northwestern, but they looked very good against a solid Stanford team. They also have better talent than BYU. Lucky for us this will be a home game and we will have more experience under our belt. But to consider this a automatic is silly. Iowa always comes to play but again it is a home game for us so will help. I think Michigan state you can almost give us an automatic Loss, they are just at a different level than we are right now. Unless they for some reason implode I don't see that one being within 2 touchdowns. Wisc is hard to say, will say more once I see a few games. They really didn't look that great against bama. So this one could be a 50/50 game. Minn will be another game that probably should be considered a loss. They are very good with great coaching. It will be a home game and they have had our number.Rutgers are another tough team would put them in the realm of an Iowa. So should be a win but at their house hard to say.
Realistically
South Bama WIN 98% confident
Miami LOSS 70% confident
Souther Miss WIN 95% confident
Illinois WIN 75% confident
Wisc WIN/LOSS 50/50
Minn LOSS 75% confident
Northwestern WIN/LOSS 50/50
Purdue WIN 70% confident
MIch St LOSS 85% confident
Rutgers WIN 60% confident
Iowa WIN 60% confident

IF we can take both the 50/50 games we can realistically get to 8-4. Lose one 7-5. Lose both 6-6. Anything less than 6-6 Should be some cause for concern.

Come on guys, get over it. BYU may be the best team we played during reg season play. 9-3 is the best and most accurate guess for the season. The O line will be addressed, and i feel is the biggest concered. The defense will ve improved a lot by adding both Roses to the picture. Theres a reason Rose is one of our starting CBs.

so
Thinking negatively and if nothing changes 6-6
Thinking Positively and if we improve 9-3
Winking

We will need to get better or we will also drop either Northwestern or Iowa also. If bank cannot fix his defense we could bein for a long year

I get the point of wanting to stay positive and the fact that this was only one game, but there were just some things that I saw that perplexed me in terms of play calling from a guy who had been coaching over 35 years. I did not expect that at all, I thought he was smarter than that. Unless I find out one of the trainers was making those 3rd down calls color me very skeptical.

There isn't a coach in this country that doesn't have a few play calls questioned every game. People question running the jet sweep on third and short forget that a little earlier in the game that NU was stuffed on third and short running a play up the middle. I saw some good things from this game and I saw some bad things from this game. BYU is not. he average opening day opponent and is a good team. Losing sucks. I hate losing. But I have hope that this team will build on the things they did well and improve the things they didn't do so well. Maybe I am a glass half full type of guy.

Cav better fix his OL. If we can`t run we will get beat by several teams.

If that hail mary pass is knocked down and we beat BYU, would you still feel the same? I would hope the answer is yes because I don't believe one play or one loss (especially the first game) will change the outcome of our season especially in conference play.

Also, I agree with your W/L predictions above IF we don't improve. But I trust that under Riley our team will improve as the season continues.

Dead on accurate!!! The cool aid needs to stop. Excuses make us look worse and boy can folks come up with them.

I think the AD vehemently disagrees with you. It's why Bo Pelini was fired. There is talent on the roster to win championships.

this acting like BYU is a real good team stuff is hilarious. they are probably around the 45th best team in college football.
