Nebraska released its 2018 schedule today with 27 home games on the spring slate. The Huskers will open play in a return trip to the Husker Classic in Tempe, Ariz. to play UC-Riverside and Washington State in four alternating games over the weekend.

Some thoughts:
*** The Huskers will return to Surprise, Ariz. once again to play Oregon State and Utah for the second year in a row, a nod to head coach Darin Erstad’s aggressive scheduling.
*** A rare late non-conference series found its way onto the schedule this year. Nebraska will play a home series against Nevada from Thursday-Saturday, April 26-28.
*** The Big Ten was kind to its defending champs. Nebraska will play no road series against 2017 Big Ten tournament qualifiers, and draws home series against Minnesota, Iowa, Maryland, and Indiana.
*** The toughest road test will undoubtedly be at Michigan State on the first weekend of April, situated on the back end of a nine-game road stand. Last spring, Erstad called the Spartans one of the teams that could’ve won the conference tournament but didn’t qualify.
*** Nebraska avoids a few key opponents. Michigan, the Big Ten’s overall record leader a year ago, will not play the Huskers. NU also avoids what I envision to be a very dangerous Northwestern team under up-and-coming coach Spencer Allen. Purdue and a much-less-injury-ravaged Penn State team are also not on the schedule.
*** Nebraska will likely be spending a significant amount of time at TD Ameritrade Park this season, with two games at Creighton and the Big Ten Tournament set to return to Omaha.
