Lincoln – The Huskers will open Big Ten action at defending regular-season champion Indiana on Dec. 28, as the Big Ten Conference announced its 2016-17 men’s basketball schedule Thursday afternoon.
The Huskers, who return two starters and five of its top eight scorers from 2015-16, will play its first two conference games on the road before its Big Ten home opener on Thursday, Jan. 5, against Iowa. The matchup with Iowa is one of five Big Ten home tilts against NCAA Tournament qualifiers at Pinnacle Bank Arena for the upcoming season.
The January schedule includes four home games, including three squads (Iowa, Ohio State and Purdue) which reached postseason play in 2015-16. After taking on Maryland on New Year’s Day in College Park, the Huskers will play three of its next four games at PBA, including matchups with the Hawkeyes, Northwestern (Jan. 8) and Ohio State (Jan. 18). The road schedule in the month features trips to Michigan (Jan. 14), Rutgers (Jan. 21) and Northwestern (Jan. 26). The Huskers’ close the month by hosting Purdue on Sunday, Jan. 29.
The month of February begins with a flourish, as the Huskers welcome Big Ten Tournament champion Michigan State to PBA on Thursday, Feb. 2. In all, three of NU’s first four games in the month are at home, including a contest against Sweet 16 qualifier Wisconsin on Thursday, Feb. 9, and a Valentine’s Day matchup with Penn State. The Huskers will be road-tested in February with a rematches at Iowa (Feb. 5), Ohio State (Feb. 18/19) and Michigan State (Feb. 23) before returning home to take on Illinois on Sunday, Feb. 26, in the only matchup between the schools.
The Huskers travel to Minnesota on March 2 before returning to Pinnacle Bank Arena for a Senior Day contest with Michigan on Sunday, March 5. The Big Ten Tournament will take place at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., for the first time in the event’s 20-year history and will run from March 8 to March 12.
Television designations for the Big Ten men’s basketball conference schedule and Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament will be announced at a later date, as every conference game, as well as the Big Ten Tournament, will be televised nationally.
Season tickets for the 2016-17 season will go on sale on Sept. 1 at 10 a.m., by visiting Huskers.com/Tickets or calling 800-8-BIGRED.
