How did Atlanta lose this game?

At one point late in the 3rd I think, the announcers mentioned that Atlanta had only ran 33 plays so far... that told me their defense had to be getting tired... and it showed.

When the Pats made a 3rd and 10 from inside their 10 yard line on that last drive, I told my wife that I would bet a thousand dollars that the Pats would score a TD and 2pt conversion to tie it.

She said I am never allowed to go to Vegas... this always happens. When you've got the whole field to go and its 3rd down...if you get that first down, you've got momentum... and they did.

Didn't milk the clock, 4th qtr snapped ball with 14 to 18 seconds on the clock. In field goal range and you call a pass play and your qb takes a sack to take you out of fg range. Run the ball get stuffed and kick a fg and you win. Bad clock management, terrible play calling in that series. It's all on Atlanta''s coaching PERIOD

I'm not denying Tom Brady played very well in the latter part of the second half, but he could have literally put all 10 of the other offensive players on his shoulders and carried them to scores, and none of it would have mattered if Atlanta's offense had played just a little better late in the game. Not to mention, for someone so great, he got incredibly lucky at least 2 or 3 times that he wasn't intercepted.

I also found it quite interesting that on the game tying 2-point conversion play, New England basically ran almost the exact same play, the exact same way, except to the other side of the field, as a play they ran in the first half that got them flagged for Offensive Pass Interference, because the one receiver ran down and started blocking before the pass was thrown, and yet curiously suddenly on such a critical play for New England (the first time the penalty was declined because Atlanta blew up the play anyway), suddenly it wasn't Offensive Pass Interference.

Yep, this + Tom Brady = big choke/big comeback ---some of each. You cannot lose up 25 points in the 3rd quarter without BIG coaching blunders and/or turnovers and the sack Atlanta took was "unforgivable". Can NOT happen there.

They didn't run 3 straight times and kick a fg. I'm almost speechless. This was after the drive where they should have been running the clock out but instead dropped back to pass and funbled lol. The Patriots are the luckiest team in history. Garbage tuck rule, seahawks not running it on the goal line and now this piss poor in game management by the falcons. Disgusting

Reminded me of the BYU game two years ago when TA was snapping the ball in the 4th Q with 14 seconds on the play clock.

Just mentioned on Sports Center. OC Shanahan was interviewed and mentioned they couldn't run the ball up the gut because of Alex Mack's stress fracture.

They didn't even have to run it up the gut. Hash marks in the NFL aren't that far apart like they are in college. They could have ran a couple toss sweep plays to either side as well.

I think we have seen on here too many times RUN THE DAMN BALL. Those 3 points would most likely have won the game for sure.

I know I didn't like the run play the Patriots did to end regulation. If you are going to do that, just kneel the ball or hell go for the Flea Flicker like they did in the last game. I knew that the Falcons defense wouldn't be able to hold up in OT. They were gassed in the 4th quarter.

Should have ran the ball at the end of the game, kicked the field goal and moved on.

Drop back passing was what NE needed them to do. And they did it.

Secondly...the kickoff return guy should have let the ball go into the endzone, so they could have gotten the ball at the 25 yard line. With 57 seconds left. Instead they got it at the 11.

Atlanta was getting pressure on Brady by rushing four down lineman only. But in the second half, they really needed to mix in a few blitz packages. I don't recall seeing them blitz very often (if at all). You have to keep Brady off-balance. Sure there's a risk to blitzing, but when you haven't done it all game and then you mix it in periodically, it has a good chance of being effective. Much better than letting Brady carve you up.

Yes, and at that point they didn't even need to run the ball successfully. Just schlep it for no gain three times, make the Pats use their timeouts, and kick the FG.

Absolute choke job. They had to make so many poor decisions and F up plays to lose that game......and they did. Most folks will remember Brady and his 5th, but I will remember the urine streaming down both legs of every Atlanta Falcon and Falcon coach.

3rd and 1 and you throw it. Get sacked and fumble....dumb..dumb...dumb.

It's gotta be a pretty rough Monday to look in the mirror if you're an ATL offensive coach or QB. I can't remember being this annoyed watching a game since Game 7 of the 2014 World Series. It seems Joe Buck saying either "Brady!" or "Bumgarner!" makes me instantly nauseous. Puke.

Bad coaching and Matt Ryan crapped the bed in the 4th quarter.....and Pats got every break in 4th quarter (including OT coin flip).

Only 1 team in the history of the NFL has come back from being down 3-28. And that team was led by Tom Brady. His throws were on the freaking money when they needed to be. And even after deflategate--comes back from it and is a 5-time SB Champ. Of course, Atlanta pissed it down their leg, but it takes an offensive part of a team to come back, too.

I would have preferred that Atlanta won the game...however, it is always fun to read the message boards of teams that lose games of this level of importance in such unlikely ways. There was one thread on a Falcon's board telling Saint's fans to "suck it", which was apparently posted about half-time last night.

I was talking about this to the people I had over to watch the game. Why not just add 8 minutes to the game? You know, just play an extra half of a quarter? Heck, just play another quarter. At least the coin flip won't likely decide the winner.

In NCAA and NBA Basketball, they play an extra 5 minutes for every OT that the teams go to.

In NCAA football, each team gets the ball at the 25-yard line and a chance to take a 3, 6 or 7 point lead and it allows the other team to have a chance to tie and go into a 2nd OT...so on and so forth

How much harder can the NFL make OT? It's pretty ridiculous that Atlanta didn't even have a chance to get the ball. I understand they want to raise the stakes and make it NHL-style, sudden-death endings, but come on. The Falcons, albeit that they had pretty much pissed the game down their leg already, still deserved a chance to tie.

I don't think I could disagree with you more. You tell any Atlanta player, coach or fan they'd be up 28-3 late in the third, they'd take it one million times out of one million offerings. Atlanta choked, and I fail to see why or how the NFL owes them an opportunity to win their money back.

My wife and I talked about the clock management as well. Good observation.

Because the regulation game ended in a tie and and the winner shouldn't be decided by a coin toss.

The overtime rules are only being discussed because the Falcons were beaten like a drum in the 4th and OT. The only perfect solution is to add another quarter for OT......but what if that ends in a tie? Play another? Its too much. Another tweak would lead to more questions.

I was pulling for the Falcons, but since they couldnt force, at best, a field goal try in OT, they shouldnt get the ball back. They choked, and the Pats took advantage of any and all opportunities in the 4th and OT.
