Houston hires Major Applewhite

I cannot think of a kid who ever got screwed worse than him when it comes to his playing career in CFB. In every way, he was many times more effective than Simms when he played, yet time and time again, Mack kept trotting Simms out there because he looked the part. Always seemed like a great kid and a class act.

Thought I had read Kiffin got that job the day before now that I think about it? That will make for some uncomfortable meetings in the 'Bama film room, right up until he leaves for LSU OC job, which I think is a given now.

From an article I read this morning:

Kiffin has indicated to others that he's optimistic he will be the next coach at Houston. Alabama coach Nick Saban said Thursday afternoon that he had not heard if Kiffin has the job, but Saban is supportive of his assistant getting an opportunity to be a head coach again.

Getting passed over couldn't happen to a nicer guy. :)

I don't think Kiffin was passed over because Major was the better coach.

The brass at UH wanted to include a HUGE buyout in Kiffin's contract. To the tune of $10 mil if he left for another job within the next 3-5 years. I think that was the sticking point.

I am not sure Applewhite is the hot commodity that Herman or Kiffin was/is so he will need time to prove he can be a good head coach. So the buyout wasn't nearly as expensive or prohibitive for Applewhite.

IMHO.

Major Appleapplesauce arm is actually a good coach - X and O should be good - can he do the rest of the job - TBD

Absolutely agree. For as much as I hated Texas, and I hated Applewhite, I always had complete respect for the guy. He was smart and was a winner. Simms had all the physical measurables, but he didn't have MA's intangibles.

I always liked the kid. Now, this man has the big gig. Good for him. Can't say that I feel sorry for Kiffin. He's no class. I'd stipulate the same if I were Houston when it comes to him.

I wasn't too impressed with Houston's offense at times. They would run the ball on 1st and 2nd down most of the time and gain 1 or 2 yards. Houston usually has good 3rd down conversion, but you can't rely on that all the time.

So are some saying Applewhite can do well and be Tx next head coach; if the newest slips on the rug under him.

Off the field definitely made a poor choice ...sleeping with a trainer while your pregnant wife is at home isnt wise

And he was a MAJOR (pun intended) reason why Texas snapped Nebraska's home win streak in 1998, and got them enough offense in 1999 for the win in Austin. Those games still make me cringe. But good luck to him anyway.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks its a bad hire. I don't remeemer him doing much coaching-wise at Texas except being in trouble off the field.

Thrilled he's not coming back to Austin. I almost hit him with my car one time, and I don't think he's forgiven me yet.
