He is still getting paid from Houston for the next 4 years.

'24 - $4.6 mil from HOU
'25 - $4.6 mil from HOU
'26 - $2.8 mil from HOU
'27 - $2.8 mil from HOU

The buyout is offset each year by any current salary (which has to be *at least* fair market value).

He’s getting $4.6M from Houston next year, so it isn’t going to be about money, unless we plan to pay him $5M+. Maybe we could stair step up his salary like we did with Rhule, so if he is still here in 26’ he is making $3M+?

So I wonder what we can do.

Giving him complete control of the offense and offensive staff is a no brainer. For example his WR Coach at WVU is now at UNC and could be looking for a job. If he wants that guy, or any offensive position coach, let him have him.

I also wonder about non-monetary contract incentives. Could we give him a house, country club memberships, etc. Contract law guys would have to help me out with this one. Would that work, or does the value of those things count against the money paid by UH making it pointless?

houston pays him and we get him stud players to work with, seems a no brainer
we will match his pay with nil spending, at he end of the tunnel rhule and dana are lifting the NC...and which ever one wants to leave can, and the other can be HC at NU....if thats what they want...

  4. Let Holgorson make any changes to the offensive coaching staff

My understanding is that his pay is pretty well locked in for the next three years wherever he goes. He's getting a little over $3 million a year from Houston. It would be stupid to pay him $2 million a year because that money would just be money that we would be paying him instead of Houston. I think we can give him up to something like $800 k give or take without it coming out of the Houston money.

What this is about is that Rhule has a great team culture that is attractive to Dana. Coaching with Rhule is attractive as well and most importantly, the opportunity to work with Dylan Raiola for the next three years.

It doesn’t have anything to do with money at this point. It’s whether or not Rhule will allow him to truly run the offense, which would include change of staff and scheme.
Not so fast. Dana's a pretty confident dude. He may decide that he likes some of the concepts that he's running this year. Remember, this isn't Dana's offense, yet he made it look pretty damn good last Saturday. Dana's not going to limit himself to the air raid offense. He's always made changes to it here and there.

And I wouldn't look for a lot of staff changes either. He may decide to keep some guys around. They will have worked together for two months by the time the bowl game has been played. Who knows?

What I was getting at is that I don't think money is necessarily the driving factor for DH. If you kind of read between the lines irt his comments, I think it is much more about having the control and the freedom to run things on the offensive side of the bsll.

So, I think it has more to do with asking him what he needs in that regard....more than what the paycheck will be.

I got the impression that he seems kind of done with being the head guy....and all of the bullshit that goes with that title. Instead, he loves the game, working with the players, creating the game week game plan, and the chess match involved with game day.

Rhule is certainly a rah rah guy. He is good in front of a mic. Those are his strengths. I am not so sure he is he is great at game day management or even putting a game week game plan together.

I still think great HC achieve at a high level when they accept what there strengths....and most importantly...their weaknesses are. Then they put great coaches around them that cover that aspect of the game for them.

Losing Hill and cooper leaving have hurt our secondary. Hartzhog just don't have the size to be a good db.
True. Also losing Quinton and Omar Brown from last year. However, there seems to be something else, maybe linebacker scheme because there always seem to be WRs and backs running wide open (and I mean WIDE OPEN) in the middle and on the sidelines. Classic example was after our punt went out at the 3, WI got a first down around the 15, then completed a sideline pass to the 40. Part of that was the QB had all day because we were in a 3 man rush, but with everybody else on D back, how the hell did WI have someone on the sideline with nobody defending him?

Also, it is rumored DH doesn't like recruiting much and doesn't like gladhanding donors. Assuming he hasn't blown his money, he has/will accumulate "generational wealth". My hope is he sticks around for a few years doing what he seems to love and is best suited for, which is whiteboards and play sheets, while Rhule leaves recruiting and gladhanding to others on the staff. Rhule already has a professional gladhander in Foley.
