Guess I don't get the baseball rankings.

Michigan only Big ten team ranked. Not necessarily disagree with that, but wouldn't put them at #15 when they are in 3rd place in the Big and #32 in RPI vs NU #39 and second place in the Big. If Michigan is #15 then I would think we would be at least #20.

RPI is the single most overused and least understood metric.

The RPI is a calculation to show strength of schedule. Any calculation, where 75% of its value is derived from opponents winning pct (OWP 50%) and opponent's opponent winning pct (OOWP 25%). The calculation deemphasizes winning (win pct 25%) and should not be used as a way to determine how good a team is.

It is a fine tool to determine how tough your schedule but should never be used to determine strength of team. IMHO.

Tell that to the Minnesota softball team. They are rated the number one team lost only a few games and wasn't even in the top 16 for the tournament.

We're #22 according to Baseball America and #23 according to D1baseball.com
Thanks. Not sure what they use on BTN rankings last night, they didn't state the source. Michigan was the only BIG team in @ #15.

There are probably 5 or 6 rankings in baseball and they are so far apart from each other that it is crazy stupud. One has us ranked at 23 where another at say 50ish. ????

Michigan swept Oklahoma in Ann Arbor back in April, when Oklahoma was ranked in the #15-18 range (OU is now #20-25-ish). This is a very nice feather in Michigan's cap, but it's probably gotten them a bit more love from the pollsters than is warranted.

Tell them what? Their RPI was like 11 or 12. It points out exactly what I said in my post. The RPI is a calculation that puts a bigger emphasis on who you played and who your opponents played than it does on if you win you games. The committee's use it as a way to rank teams and don't understand what the calculations represent.

If you think that's bad, North Carolina had a top-20 RPI a couple years ago and wasn't even in the 64-team tournament field.

What was their record though? I have no idea, but was it bad enough to make it a reason they didn't get in? Just having a high RPI doesn't qualify a team for the postseason. You also have to have a good record.

Judging by your post, I assume they had a decent record and should have been in, but I don't know what their record was, which is why I'm asking. I know I could look it up, just feeling lazy at the moment.

That is the opposite of Minnesota softball, in that they were 54-3 and had an RPI of 11 or 12 because they only played 4 Top 25 RPI games.

What was North Carolina's record that year?

That UNC team is an example of why RPI shouldn't be used to rank a team's success though too.

If North Carolina was a .500 team but played a tough schedule, they could very well have a top 25 RPI but not deserving of a berth.

Honestly, Minnesota's chance to win the league is ridiculous. They have only played two teams in the upper half of the Big Ten:

Nebraska and Indiana. The Gophers lost both of those series. Hell, Nebraska and Michigan didn't even face off in the regular season. So Its not a stretch to see them ranked. THey are a great team.

THe Big Ten schedule makers are potato in every Big Ten sport

Personally, I would not put us in the top 25. I just thought "this" particular poll was odd that had Michigan #15, who is in third place, decent record overall, and 5-7 points ahead of us in RPI.

Do I think we are a good team??? Potentially. I think we have a lot of upside potential yet even this late in the season. But sometimes they make me scratch my head.

Nothing that happens to this team moving forward would surprise me.

The Jake Taylor " win the whole f-ing thing" to ________, you fill in the blank.

Do you really follow college baseball nationally close enough to know who should and who should not be in the top 25?

I have not watched enough other teams this year but right now I'm just not feeling we're top25. Close, yes. If we sweep this last series, yes.

There's A LOT to like about this team. Like I said above, I think there's a ton of upside potential yet. I think it's very possible we win regular season ind conference tournament. I sure hope so.

I like the emotion of this team. Just gotta have a bit more offense and not leave so many runners on base. Tend to leave pitchers in a tad bit too long for comfort at times. Best pitching depth we have had in a long time imo.

I kinda see our team around 40ish or so
Based on what? Tell us who the other 40 teams that are better than us are.

I'm no wild-eyed optimist about this team, and I've been as critical as anybody about them over the course of the season. But I really don't get this mentality either from people who don't know much about the college baseball world who think they know enough about it to say that we aren't as good as those who rank us think we are. It's the stupid "we suck" mentality that I am so sick of. Heaven forbid you'd just accept that somebody thinks we're good and just move on. No, no you have to run your team down at every juncture.

Just based on we are in a weak league and I have little faith in this team once the postseason starts .. .need to see it to believe it

I understand that and I'm with you on that. Just yesterday, I said that we need to show something in the postseason and going 0-2 again would not show much, if any progress from last year. But to say you think we rank around 40ish right now without really any good reason other than we are in a "weak league"(personally, I don't think a conference that is likely to send 4 teams to the NCAA tournament is "weak") and you have little faith in this team once postseason starts(which is based on prior history and has nothing at all to do with where we rank right now) seems to be a pretty weak argument.

It's been a fun season. Don't understand those that cannot enjoy it. All I keep hearing after we played that really tough OOC schedule early on was, "We suck. We suck. We suck." Then when we had a good stretch in conference the naysayers were quiet. Really quiet. Lose one game and the refrain returns. "We suck. We suck. We suck." Now, the very same is just waiting for us to stumble to say it again.

What is it about 32-17-1/14-6-1 that makes people unhappy? Why are so many of you self-loathing? Outside of the Van Horn years we've never been a baseball power. So, when we have a year like this why can't we just enjoy it. It wouldn't surprise me if we didn't win the B1G. However, it's still very possible. I'm going to be rooting for them hard this weekend. Hopefully Meyers' hand has been recovering enough to play!

GBR

I think if we had never seen the highs of 98-08 this would be seen as a better team but we know what really good teams and play looks like and I feel we are really far away from that
