I tend to agree. If plan A was going to be Butler at DC, it should have been announced already. That fact it hasn’t means he is somewhere between plan B-Z.

I saw an interview with Christian Jones he said something interesting. When they asked him about TW moving on he said Coach Rhule had something up his sleeve and always makes good defensive hires I am not worried whatsoever.

Diaco turned out to be a bit of a weirdo, but in truth, he could have been the second coming of Monte Kiffin and it wouldn't have made much difference. That roster was not designed for the type of 3-4 D he wanted to run. Riley allowed his AD to mau mau him into changing the D. The Davis twins were typical 4-3 DTs and were ready to start. NU barely had enough backers to field a 4-3. Incredible self own.
Diaco wasn't just strange. He was incompetent. We did have deficiencies to run his defense but he was incapable of teaching his D as well.
I remember our OLB's lining up in no man's land as part of his 'genius' scheme. Somewhere between the inside receiver and the line. Guess Diaco thought our below average OLB's could cover 2 completely different assignments when in reality they could hardly cover even one?

I feel like Butler is a bad compromise. An NFL guy who wasn't a DC but wasn't thought of as a rising coach. Not known as a good recruiter. His experience prior to the NFL revolved a lot around special teams. Maybe move him there and hire a new db coach and DC. Db coach should be a hotshot recruiter IMO. Have to have athletes back there.
I’d try to get one before the portal closes, if that DC is from another school that you can raid players.

I agree. I'll support whomever the hire is. I could not care less about whether it's a splash hire and it wins over the message board critics. Who is the best coach? Hire him and style points be damned.
A lot of those guys were recently fired coaches. Saban ran a career rehab program over there. Come join an elite head coach and coach a bunch of five star players who are also good kids. A lot of guys took advantage of that.
