Going to be interesting to see if Butler institutes any defensive changes for the bowl game. Obviously, any major changes will probably wait until next year. But I would wager we are going to see some new wrinkles. I am looking forward to it. I was never a huge Tony White fanboy. His defenses here were obviously good ones. But I also thought something was lacking. Killer instinct? Effective blitz packages?

When he was hired I clearly recall some posters accurately claim that his 3-3-5 scheme was very good in terms of flexibility and disguising stuff but also prone to giving up big plays. That's exactly what we saw. So was issue the scheme, the guys in the back end, inconsistent pressure up front or a combination of all the above? I'm kinda leaning toward the last option though Ty was great up front and Nash did his job of eating up blocks. No question we need better athletes on the back end as well.

I don’t think the issues were necessarily with the scheme. There were several times, and games, where we were not aggressive on third down. The UCLA game, in the first half, is a prime example. We let them march up and down the field, picking up third downs several times waiting for them to make a mistake, instead of forcing the mistake. One more third downs stop against Ohio St and Nebraska is victorious there as well. So in short, I think it was just as much playcalling as it was scheme.

I agree. That is sort of what I meant when I spoke of a lack of killer instinct. We often dialed up defensive play calls that were too timid in my view

That play where Giff took the wrong guy on that OSU option was a killer. We had the right D dialed up and all he had to do was….his job. Clearly a huge blunder that if I had to pick one play I would say that cost us that game.

I don't think he is great at designing or calling blitzes. Some DC's just seem to have a knack for it.

White was able to take that side of the ball, strip it down and teach the fundamentals and the team was pretty sound in terms of their overall play. Fans can be critical but statistically this is a very good defense. I think some of the younger players as well as the transfers are cut above in terms of overall athleticism so that if Butler has the goods as a defensive play caller the defense should be even better in the coming years.

It seemed like his blitzes were very predictable, you are also correct we don’t have anyone especially on defense that would step up and take control like making a sure tackle on the Iowa running or sacks the quarterback on a fourth down. I would like to know his third down efficiency because this year it can’t be good especially third and long, so reminiscent of chinanders

Rhule said he didn’t want to change the defense. And Butler has a year in the system, so the basic lingo can stay the same. I see Tony as a bit of a defensive builder. Come in and take a roster, move some kids around and get as effective a defense as you can get. NU had enough basic defensive clay to field a top 20 defense. Butler’s job is to hold the gains and add talent. Evolve the D to the talent available.

I’ve posted this before but a former GM or NFl head coach, can’t remember which, was asked why fired coordinators kept getting rehired by other franchises. His answer was because there’s so few guys who can call plays. You can be the smartest football guy in the room but you might not be able to call plays.

I thought we gave up far less big plays than previous years. At least it seems that way.

seemed a bit of a drop off with the cb's with Cooper gone, white hired him pronto at fsu...
apparently butler is a tad more complex thus perhaps next year the cb's will have a better grasp...
lb play should improve with transfers..the dline I'd like to see a monster next to van popple, we don't want to tarry on that and let teams think it's ok to run up the middle..

over all I'm expecting improvement on the defense...but not near as much as offense and special teams..
they got alot farther to go..if the goal is to get back to Nebraska Football

I share the OP's interest & enthusiasm for this game. On defense I'm anticipating a little more blitzing. On offense an energized run game and more short passes.
