B1G football and beyond talk...
"With today's offenses you can give up yards and still be a good defense".

What say you?

I'm not talking points I'm talking yards.

The talk lately is about Saban and being the all world defensive guru and giving up yards and points like they are going out of style vs peer competitors.

Not having had a secondary in some seasons (nor really a QB) despite all world recruiting and talent all over his backyard. On another board I think it was, they listed the pass defense ratings for the teams in the CFB playoff last year, OSU was in the Top 20 at 15, but the other three teams were like 50 something, 70 something and Oregon at like 105.

With the rules geared toward offense it is going to be more difficult to have that lock down defense like 2009 NU for example. With clocking stopping on first downs and the passing rules I think 350 might be the new standard of good defenses.

You can still have a good team and a good season, but that doesn't mean you have a good defense.

Kind of like just because you have an ankle sprain doesn't mean it is broken.

Good offenses are tough to stop...but you shouldn't be giving up that many yards on a week to week basis unless you play in the big 12...err...or whatever they are now.

I think with the rules that are put in place for the offenses and the hurry up giving up yards is going to happen. I do agree that you can give up yardage and be a good defense but keeping other teams out of the end zone and forcing fg are as important as yards given up.

Forget Nebraska. I'm being serious about this. Have offenses become so prolific that is giving up yards inevitable?
It all depends on whether those yards lead to points. So yes, the statements can be true. The days of good defense will have it's say again. It still is usually the decider of champions. Oregon has had the most prolific offense for years now, and they still can't win the big one.
Auburn is the only team in recent history that has won with a mostly crappy defense.

I think you also have to take into account the teams they're playing and if they're getting their brains beat in half the time. Obviously teams that play the Baylors and Texas Techs of the world aren't going to show a good pass defense when it comes to yards. Oregon was also putting 50+ on everyone last year so other teams had to pass to keep up. It always seems to come back to run the ball, stop the run, play good special teams=win more often than not
