The loss sure was a kick in the pants. But what i saw from our coaches and players in their first game together was positive. We are moving in the right direction under Riley.

worried about field goal kicking, otherwise I think we will be alright

Definitely some work, but I still have optimism for the season. If we find a running game, and shore up the pass D we will be alright. GBR!

There were times we looked solid in both areas. As the season goes on i suspect you'll see more consistent play.

Was alot of "what ifs" in the game that would have resulted in a W. They will be fine

Sometimes a loss will help bring these issues to light. And better now then come B1G time. A tough and salty opponent is the best thing for us right now.

If I didn't know better I would have thought BoBo was coaching Sat. (especially at the end)

Agree on the team part. Armstrong's play over 4 quarters was generally improved I thought, and some good adjustments were made. I can buy into the thought that the players need more time with the coaches to continue improving in some areas.

My biggest issue is that we got a coaching staff in that is very experienced and very professional...yet the handling of the final sequence of the game felt anything but. That's not an issue you can attribute to time spent or not spent together. Is there a winning mentality with this group? Need to see more there going forward.

Also, you don't have to go almost punch a ref or anything, but when we have a guy taken out by a cheapshot that goes unpunished by the zebras I want to see our coach get out there and stick up for our guys.

I think the final sequence is overblown, if you are referencing the TO's and such. I think Riley's explanation was reasonable and probably philosophically different than folks who are in a tizzy over it. Not something that is demonstrably truer one way or the other.

The prevent defense on the last play was not my preference either, but again, some of that has to be on the kids too. Its more than clear that Riley and Co wanted them covered front and back, but that wasn't executed on the field. As with everything, there is talk and action. Still, had the pass been incomplete, there wouldn't be this pile of sour grapes either.

It appeared on TV Riley was still in the side judge's ear after Sutton was carted off and during the presser yesterday HCMR seemed upset about it and said when the league reviewed the game he was hoping they would be looking at the hit. Maybe not a vein-popping, eye-bulging, on field response that shows the players he is sticking up for them, but perhaps good for cultivating a long-term relationship with B1G officials.

Team remained competitive after being down, did NOT choke!

Armstrong looks improved.

Couching staff is mature and professional.

Great game exposure & experience for younger players.

Better days are ahead.

Overall, I agree that I felt like I saw enough small things to give me hope for the remainder of the year. My biggest concerns are as follows:

1) Slight concern that Riley was quick to throw in the towel on the run game. As we have come to know, those 2, 3 and 4 yard runs in the first half can turn into 6,7, 8+ yard runs in the fourth quarter if you stick with it. I was pleased that the team went back to the run game with some purpose in the second half. I imagine Riley appreciates a run game but just doesn't have confidence that we can pick up many yards with standard runs.

2) A bigger concern, to me, is the lack of defense overall. I did think the tackling was improved, but saw too many open receivers. and breakdowns on QB keepers. There were many Oregon State fans who were happy to see Banker leave. I tried to ignore that feedback, but so far the jury is still out.

At the end of the day, I felt like we had professionals leading the team last week and think we will see steady improvement over the year.

All in all, I'm not going to let one play cloud my judgement from the game. Ideally we'd have come out with a win, but win or loss, for 59:59 seconds, we were a slightly better team than BYU that still had some things to be happy with and some things that needed to be cleaned up.

Lack of rushing ability on offense has me greatly concerned. If we can`t run the football, which I don`t believe we`ll be able to against any good opponemts, it's going to be a rough yr. 7-5 is my prediction at this pt.

Our entire defense is a concern for me until proven otherwise. Doubt banker will get it done. Other assistants on the defensive staff are good but collectively...not sure they can make this defense tough enough

How in the right mind can you say we are moving in the right direction with Riley when his first game was a loss?? His coaching remains to be seen and let's wait until the end of the year to judge his ability. It was a disastrous start from previous Nebraska "Standards".

GBR!!!

Concerning rushing and defense, I do think we more data to make a judgment. Supposing we had pounded the rock, but didn't generate any offense, we'd be seeing the checkers vs chess comments about why don't we get away from that DT that is destroying us. So it remains to be seen by me whether, Riley went pass heavy because that what was available, or because he is morally opposed to it. I would think it was more the former, he didn't bomb it like Beck, and the short pass/screen game accounted for at least half the throws which was probably his way of augmenting a fairly underperforming run game.

We got beat by a mediocre, used-to-be mountain west team that racks up losses against just about any other Power 5 team, with the exception of Texas, Washington State, and now Nebraska. Who knows if Mike Riley will revive the program or put the last nail in the coffin.

There, it's done. We can move on, there's still a lot of season left before everyone goes all chicken little.

this was from an Oregon state board
Until Nebraska made their run, they were doing the same kinds of things we saw OSU do many times and you knew who was coaching . I closed my eyes during Rileys half time interview and it was like yesterday
Yeah, I love Riley, but it was like watching old OSU teams.....running the same unsuccessful plays over and over again. So many little screen plays for 1-2 yards.
And that Hail Mary was IDENTICAL to the one SC sprung on us.....can't believe they let that happen.
Watched the game and it reminded me so much of what we saw in Corvallis over the years and you just had a feeling how it was going to end.
Reading the nebraska boards almost gives me flashbacks. this was from different posters. they all like riley. they all just kept saying it was the samething they say at Oregon state. they do not like banker

I don't get the pass happy comments. In the second half we saw a balance of run and pass the got us the lead and win if not for the last play.

Halftime adjustments were made which put us into a position to win the game.
Isn't that what we all long for in a coach???

Oregon State fans have a ton of delusion that they are entitled to something. I am married to an OSU grad, and have had numerous conversations with them. They pissed and moaned about Riley a lot, but their savior they just brought in (Gary Andersen) gave them 6 points at half against the highly touted Weber State team. Let's pump the breaks and see what happens.

I think somewhere in this thread someone said we threw 30 times by halftime. If Armstrong ended up with 40 or so attempts then that would mean that we didn't hardly throw the ball after half.

I have seen that number 40 thrown around quite a bit so I would assume it's pretty accurate for total attempts. What number we made by half I have no idea, but if that number 30 is true then whoever tried to illustrate That Riley abhors the run game would be eminently wrong by demonstration in the second half
