I know there is an NFL rule about fumbling the ball forward when the clock is under 2:00 or it is 4th down. Only the ball carrier that fumbled can recover or advance.
So what if a team is low on timeouts (or completely out) and wants to stop the clock; what prevents him from laterally tossing the ball out of bounds?
Is there any rule in the book that says a player cannot intentionally lose a ball out of bounds to stop the clock? Or would the clock continue to run?
How about making it look like you fumbled it forward while reaching out?
