Fred should be fired today

I think he should be fired. He’s done very little in 6 years. You can win at Nebraska (ask Danny Nee about his 90’s Teams). 1991 was a beautiful team - Nee called it Noah’s Ark once -because he had two very good players at every position. And that team also had quite a few players that were not highly recruited - Clifford Scales, Beau Read…and others. I’m not even sure Piatkowski was highly recruited ( or a top 100 guy).

Fred won’t be fired though He will get next year.

NC State just canned Keats, guy went on a lucky run last year to get to the FF and this year, sucked again. The writing was on the wall and NCstate is looking for a new coach, they will probably higher Will Wade who will have them in the dace pretty much every single season.

Tell him to write BIGGER NIL checks for basketball or STFU. We’re going to have to pay more and better guards more than anything else if we want win in the B1G. Brice was the only guard on this team who should be a B1G starter.

We didn’t lose to Duke or Auburn. 4 of the last 5 loses were to the bottom half of the conference that isn’t going dancing. NIL had nothing to do with that. Dingle do you work in the Nebraska athletic department? That’s the only sense I can make of you never ever blaming the real problem. This is a pattern with you

Whoa whoa whoa this isn’t matt rhule we’re talking about
It’s the same gaslight right? Tank in the second half of the season. Lose to a crap Iowa team to end the season. Maybe Fred gets into the NIT and wins a game or two, that’d be on par with beating BC in the pinestripe bowl. Maybe Fred can cancel a game or two to match Matt.

But I get it, we have a strong fan base and most of them don’t want to face reality during the off-season cause no one likes to face no hope

Well, I was thinking to myself, it’s just the new normal for NU athletics to lag behind the big boys in any sport really, but then you said it: it’s the NIL, dummy! $ is the great equalizer now. Now having said that, maybe we are still a “small market” University and will always be at a disadvantage?…..what do we have to do to get enough $ to compete and offer the biggest carrots?
It’s not just a matter of money. I’m a huge KU fan and they spent a ton of money bringing in AJ Storr, Rylen Griffen and Hunter D. They’ve struggled this year because the pieces don’t fit well. Even with a HOF coach, Gone are the days where players develop over time, learn to play with each other, develop chemistry.

It seems like Fred has to turn over his entire roster every year and there’s little chance that can be very successful.

KU made the mistake or playing through Hunter. It clogs up everything for them and then like you said, the pieced they brought in just don't really fit.

NIL as it exists today will go away if the House settlement is approved next month. According to the Sports Illustrated article linked below, the Power 4 conferences have agreed to create a separate entity that will serve the following functions:

“First, it will oversee a cap management system, ensuring schools stay within the $20.5 million annual revenue-sharing limit. It will additionally establish an NIL clearinghouse, run by Deloitte, to assess the fair market value of NIL deals and prevent schools from using booster-backed collectives to bypass the cap.

A new investigative and infractions unit will police violations, including tampering and salary cap circumvention. Penalties will include fines, revenue-share reductions, and suspensions for coaches and administrators. The power conferences believe this structure will prevent the chaos and unchecked spending wars that have defined the NIL era thus far.”

So, if the House settlement is approved next month, a person could pay NIL money to a player only if the person uses the player’s name, image or likeness, and the amount of the payment could not exceed the fair market value of the name, image or likeness, as determined by the clearinghouse. Collectives and big boosters could not fund “pay-for-play” NIL deals, as they do now. Theoretically, this would make the NIL playing field more level.

Power Conferences to Take Over NIL Oversight as NCAA Forfeits Control
Thanks for the explanation. This deserves its own thread.

Do we think Nebraska benefits from this? Or, will it mean you need to nail coaching hires and recruiting/transfer additions, because you can’t buy your way out of mistakes with NIL money?

I mean primarily for football and basketball.

I’m not seeing how this will work.

How is someone going to be able to determine what the fair market value really is? Do we really believe that one can put in a one price fits all across the entire country? Advertising is more expensive in big cities- are they really going to restrict a kid at a school in a big city from earning more for a billboard than a kid in a traditional college town? And if they don’t, won’t there always be an advantage to schools in bigger cities?

Also, how do you value superstars vs stars vs role players? Is Cooper Flagg going to be limited to the same amount paid to a Sam Hoiberg? By every definition, the endorsement of a superstar that brings national attention is more valuable than a role player that maybe gets some local attention at best. Technically the value is whatever someone will pay for the endorsement. Unless there is a hard cap on what the kids can be paid, I don’t see how this would work. And if there is a hard cap, that would be collusion and violate previous decisions of the US Supreme Court (as the article states, there is already a new lawsuit challenging the proposed cap). There is still no union representing student athletes, so you can’t get around previous precedent by arguing any agreement was collectively bargained.

I do not agree. Sam plays hard, gets a lot of loose balls and rebounds, but most importantly makes up for the mistakes made by other players. He can score, but do I ever think he will be a big scorer? No. I just think he is a great "Glue" player. Does the dirty work for the team.
Agreed, but he is playing too many minutes. Probably out of necessity. This team relies too much on Brice and Gary. Those two have to do it all. If one is off his game, the team is in trouble.

I am guessing that UVA fans liked that style when they were winning 25+ games and getting 1 seeds.
I've always thought that Nebraska has to play different in order to succeed. So having a mentally tough, defense first program is the answer. The talent is just too thin this year and their shooters have not performed when it mattered the most.

Yeah I'm not sure. I'm guessing that will be the resurrection of the sec bagmen

For the last 5-6 games of the season we might have had the easiest path to the dance over any P5 team. Do we have elite talent, no, but we had enough talent to win 2 of those games against the shittiest teams the B1G had to offer.

This will be an unpopular opinion, but I think the jury is still out on Hoiberg. Although it looks like an 11-1 hung jury vote right now, it seems it won't take much to convince the final person to vote for conviction.

Hoiberg has had 2 decent stretches. Unfortunately, they have spanned over 3 seasons. The latter half of 2022-23 was decent and showed promise. The 2023-24 season mostly matched expectations and he got us our first NCAA berth in a number of years. The 2024-25 season started out good but then fell off a cliff. As I've mentioned on a few occasions in other threads, there is a fine line between winning and losing. We had Tominaga step up and become a huge leader and by all accounts was a great "culture" guy. That helped team chemistry. When he exhausted his eligibility, the culture and chemistry seemed to go downhill. It carried over into the first half of the season. I have the sense (no hard evidence) that team chemistry this year is not good for some reason. Some will argue that is the fault of the head coach. They may be correct. But there is also a lot of evidence over the years that without a strong leader on the team, even good/great coaches can struggle. I wouldn't be surprised that after the season is over that we hear about some sort of turmoil or conflict within the team.

Don’t disagree with much of this and I suspect we may hear rumblings to that effect. (poor chemistry) But shouldn’t the coach be the one enduring leader regardless of his players’ ability to lead? I thought about this a lot with regards to Tominaga and Hoiberg. Seems Tominaga’s effort, infectious passion and joy for the game had a positive influence on his teammates effort and passion. Effort and passion that wasn’t there before Tominaga or after.

Last year’s team had Josiah, Kesei, and Mast as really strong leaders. This year’s team didn’t really have anybody like that, hence Fred having to lose it halftime a lot.

Well, I guess losing it at halftime worked at least once that we know of… 🫤

Agree the coach should be at the top. But there are some instances that no coach is going to overcome. If there is really crappy chemistry, even the best coaches are not going to make it better. The great coaches have the depth of talent that they can at least get something out of a season (maybe make NCAA like expected, but an early exit). Nebraska has "decent" talent, not good (or even great). They have enough if things click. Things didn't click for 2 different stretches.

Interesting observation on how NU had two good seasons, unfortunately stretched over 3 actual seasons. They were 46-23 from basically a 2 year stretch from Feb ‘23 to Feb ‘25. About a dozen Quad 1 wins included.

Just another example of the Twilight Zone weirdness of NU Hoops.

Maybe Fred could bring back Moe Iba as a consultant.
